View Full Version : Throwin Chains

My trike keep throwing chains, I can't seem to figure out a pattern (hard throttle, rough ground etc.). I've got a few ideas, but to fill everyone in the chain seems a little tight, and the front sprocket seems just a little loose, and could maybe use some different bolts, it currently has three flange bolts but could probably use some shoulder bolts. Those are both things I'm going to address tomorrow, but I just wanted a few other opinions. The trike is kinda a Frankenstein, It's an 83 200x frame, 185s motor, extended 200x swinger, with a 250r wide axle. New sprockets, new chain. The chain looks pretty straight.
Also, anyone know where I can get swing arm adjusters for adjusting the chain tension? Mine works for now but is broken in half. This could be part of my chain problem, but its pretty tight and doesn't seem to move, so I don't think it's the main problem... but it could be... idk ha. Anyway....
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Has it just recently started throwing chains? Usually they throw off when theyre too loose. Is it stock gearing or are you running a smaller front sprocket? Check out dratv or beatrice cycles. They had some a while back. Call to see if they can get one for you. Get the adjuster fixed first and see if that helps

No idea what stock gearing was for it, especially running the 250r rear, at the moment it's got 11 front, 41 rear. All gears are new because everything was shot when I bought it. I'll check them for the adjuster though. Thanks.

When you get an adjuster, try this. Set the trike on a stand, and disconnect the rear shock. Jack up the swingarm until the axle, swingarm bolt, and countershaft are all inline with each other. That's the longest run the chain will ever see, so adjust to basically zero slack, but no tension at that position. That should be about the perfect chain adjustment.

Thanks, for adjusting the chain that makes a lot of sense, plus I've been meaning to change out my rear shock anyway, that'll give me a good opportunity to do that. I've attached a few pictures of how it's sitting right now, the chain is fairly tight with it all the way up, and when I sit on it it goes down quite a ways, I at least compress the suspension half way (205 lbs). I'll get some new adjusters and give that a shot.
Thanks for all the help.

So I got to looking and I think the adjuster will definitely fix my problem. I thought that the old one was ok, but it looks like it's loosened up because now the chain is loose, and the adjuster has a good deal of slop. It looks like what was happening was that the chain was good and tight until the rear got bumped a certain way, whether coming down from a wheelie, or braking hard and fast or just the right bump, causing the swing arm to move and knock the chain off. I've got some coming so hopefully that'll fix everything.
Thanks again for the help.
Be sure to check the torque on your swing arm pivot bolt too.

Sounds good, I'll check that once I get my adjusters.
