So glad I can finally post this. Sorry for the lengthy post.. A little over 2 years ago I got into trikes. Being 14 at the time, I wanted an ATV that I could beat up and then dispose of, naturally I thought of a 3 wheeler because there so cheap. Growing up my cousins have always had 3 wheelers, like 90's, 110's, and 125's and sometimes a 185s. I actually thought the 185s was the biggest 3 wheeler ever built by Honda being like 6 years old, just because thats what my cousins had!! Back to 14 years old I was searching craigslist for 3 wheelers, thinking of a 110 at first, then a 200s, and I came upon this 1983 200X. It had a fully rebuilt motor and new tires all around for 600 dollars. I decided I would like to look at it. My Dad and I ran down there and took a look at it, it was a major POS cosmetically. At the time the biggest 4 wheelers I have ridden were Utility Honda 4 wheelers, so I never knew what acceleration was. I hopped on it, (this was my first time using a manual clutch) I killed it 2 or 3 times and then I finally got it going. I slowly accelerated it to 2nd, and then I punched it, and as soon as I felt that, in my head I said I am going to always love 3 wheelers!! I had no idea they had even made 250 2 stroke 3 wheeler until about 2 months later. Then liquid r's were around 900-1400 bucks in Minnesota, I was broke from buying the 200x and I really wanted a 250r. I absolutely loved the look of 85-86 250r's. I have always looked at liquid cooled 250r's as somewhat of a legend sense, and have always been on the lookout for one. This spring I heard from a friend that a guy in a local town near me had some liquid r parts. I met up with him and basically what I got was just a bunch of random parts, frame, radiators, tail light, wiring harness, forks, CDI box, things like that. On the way home I decided to stop at random peoples houses in the country side and ask if they had any 3 wheelers or knew of anybody with any. After a couple of misses, I came across this place with some elderly people. (they actually ended up being my Dads cousin) and they gave me a guys number, who they said had at least 75 3 wheelers. That got my attention, a guy that has that many 3 wheelers has to have some liquid r's. So I gave the guy a call later that day and he said enough parts to build 2-3 liquid r's. I went freaking nuts!!! I ended up going there and getting a motor, 3 frames, fenders, 2 front ends, 2 swingarms, 2 shocks, lots of brake parts, 3 sets of rads, motor mounts, and the works, for a very reasonable price. Only the best liquid r I could build would be suite for me. I had zero money to start a build like this so fast forward to June. My friends and I planned a Dune trip to the Little Sahara Sand dunes in Utah. I ended up taking my 82 250r there, we met up with some trikers and I got to ride a liquid R for the first time. I LOVED it. I had such a blast there that I decided it was time I get going on my 250r, I decided to go with a 330 big bore from ESR. I sold my snowmobile to help fund this, and have been working 5-6 days a week with high school to pay for this thing. The owner of the liquid R I rode out in Little Sahara extends swingarms, so he extended my swingarm 2 inches, and also bought 2 Baja light bars from him. The guy I bought all these parts from has a sand blaster and Powder coating set up and he said he would let me use them. Tonight I just got back from powder coating at his place. Some of the NEW upgrade parts I have bought are as follows. Lone star adjustable width axle, 1-4 inches. Lone star billet bearing carrier, oversize radiators, progressive fork springs, and Racetech gold valve emulators, PRM nerf bars. There is so much stuff to list its un believable. I had Mr clean polish up my tank, (LOOKS AMAZING). I also had GKing polishing on Facebook to polish a lot of my parts. Sorry if this was a long post but I just had to tell my story and why Im addicted, to these things that are trikes, and how I got to where I am with this build.

These bikes came from outside this dudes back yard just rotting. So glad I found them when I did.
Currently my rear shock is being rebuilt, revalved, and resprung for my weight, riding style, and swingarm length.
I am completely finishing the chassis first before I start building the motor, It is a 1985, but with an 1987 scheme.
I hope you guys can appreciate this build, as much as I am so far. It is a big undertaking for a teenager...

Alright guys here are the pics starting with on the trip home, to tear down. New parts pics, polished parts pics, and then powder coated parts pics.

That is one thing I don't have. They sell bran new tail lights on ebay for very reasonable prices.

Thank you guys so much for the positive comments!!! Hoping to get some more progress on her this weekend!

Just an afterthought about Mr cleans tank polishing.. I put the tank on the frame (everything was in my room), and I giddily smiled to myself for like 2 hours while surfing the net and every 5 seconds looking up at the thing, LOL.

Im going to get an Ebay seat cover for it, I don't have the time to wait 3 months for it to be done, so I will have my brother do it, he is really good at this sort of thing and he has done a few for me already. I am not running any blue on this machine, so it will be a red and white seat. Yes I saw those shrouds and Im not really interested in spending that kind of money for some shrouds, I like the stock shrouds.

Maybe I missed it in the thread, but what version of the 330 are you using? . The bolt on or the machined case one? . ATC bottom end or the TRX bottom? . Depending on witch way you went, I may be able to steer you around some of the "small" problems with the ESR 330.

Machined case, and its an 86 ATC bottom end.

Non bolt on is good. ATC bottom is good also. I'm running a TRX long rod bottom and it creates fitment issues, so your good there. You didn't say it was a power valve, so I assume its not. Unless ESR has changed their casting, they use the same cylinder for the power valve and non power valve applications. They just don't machine out the material around the exhaust port around the non power valve style, leaving poor cooling in that area because there is no coolant getting there. They run fine in the quads where there is a lot of room for air to get around the engine, but in the ATC it is a very tight fit and they run VERY hot!. I strongly recommend you run a temp guage. Not the ESR type ,they are useless. Get the digital one from Trail tec that you can clamp to the bars they are only 10 bucks more. Your rads have to be in top shape and you might have to run strait water or engine ice just to keep your temp down below 220 deg. Race gas, fat jetting, aftermarket over size rads also help , but just a little.

^^^good advice!!^^^

Saw your pics on FB last night Jonathan... You're doing a TERRIFIC job!!! Nicer than mine! :beer

Just want to warn you so you can address it before you get too far along adding components for assembly: Being that you are running a stroker and no doubt a cylinder spacer, you are liable to have some tight clearance for your sparkplug and more importantly getting the coil wire connected to it. Make sure you check that out and address it before you get tank and rads mounted. It will just be easier to deal with now rather than later. You might have to run a shorty plug. Myself, I was able to get away with just a compact spark plug boot like you might find on a chainsaw or weedeater. I'm running a stock stroke 350 so no spacer for me. Thats about the only thing that gives me hesitation about a stroker....

hatc200x1

I was originally planning to use the non powervalve. Are you saying I should get the powervalve because they cool better? My engine set up is still debatable, not quite ready to order it.

Haha thanks Joe!! I doubt it will be as nice though! You got one cherry R man!

RIDE-RED 250r

My experience: I am not running the PV. ESR recommends an 80/20 mix of water/antifreeze, no doubt to help it run cooler. Also, as Bob Marlin said be a little generous with your jetting. You wont need to dial it on in the ragged edge, that 330 stroker is going to run. Let it eat a little. Not blubbery and sluggish, just a bit on the safer side if that makes any sense.

hatc200x1
01-10-2015, 03:14 PM
I am getting an APT smart carb for it. So I really can't "jet" it. I guess we will have to see how she runs and go from there.

BOB MARLIN
01-11-2015, 09:13 AM
I'd save the money and go with the non power valve. The 330 is almost a square bore, so it makes good torque. I know a couple of guys that ran the PV's and had them come apart. They both run the non PV now and are quite happy with them. Just keep an eye on your engine temps. Mine runs well over 220 deg. I have pulled the cylinder to check for damage and found nothing, so apparently they can handle it.

RIDE-RED 250r

^^^agreed^^^

The 330 with a +4 crank seems to be a popular and widely loved combination! That's going to run good!
I almost went with that exact setup, but after seeing where the trikes have a degree of spark plug clearance issues when running longer strokes I decided to go with a straight 350. It's not only the deck height increase, bit the fact that the ESR heads don't angle the spark plug. Makes it tight. With my setup I am able to still run a standard plug, I just have to run a small plug cap. And I am still running the short rod too....

Got some progress guys, finally got her on 3 wheels! It feels great!!! To get the brake stay snap ring to sit I had to take a die grinder and grind a good amount on both sides of the swingarm, file it down 100% flat, and then I also had to remove some material on the brake stay it self, WOW that took a while. The edges of the swingarm were definitely dinged up pretty good. http://i1382.photobucket.com/albums/ah244/jbrunescape101/Mobile%20Uploads/20150205_115239_zpsgrrtvzyp.jpg (http://s1382.photobucket.com/user/jbrunescape101/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150205_115239_zpsgrrtvzyp.jpg.html)http://i1382.photobucket.com/albums/ah244/jbrunescape101/Mobile%20Uploads/20150205_115244_zpsolqm9wim.jpg (http://s1382.photobucket.com/user/jbrunescape101/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150205_115244_zpsolqm9wim.jpg.html)http://i1382.photobucket.com/albums/ah244/jbrunescape101/Mobile%20Uploads/20150205_115251_zpsbvqwlkaf.jpg (http://s1382.photobucket.com/user/jbrunescape101/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150205_115251_zpsbvqwlkaf.jpg.html)

Excellent question!! I never took apart a liquid r before since I got all of these pretty much 100% disassembled so I really didn't know all I needed. I knew something was wrong as soon as I slid the axle nut on and asked my self how the crap does it tighten anything??? Haha.. I already got a spacer and cir-clip on the way for it to get that all buttoned up.

I'm still confused, it's an LSR +4 right? Shouldnt need a spacer, I have the exact axle on my 85R, and I used all the stock components off the original axle minus the LSR sprocket hub and 86 sprocket

Yes it is an LSR +4. I don't see why it wouldn't need a spacer? Yup I'm running an 86 sprocket, and OEM brake hub (thanks Mr. Clean and Tim!!). It appears fully that I will need the spacer between the axle nut and the cir-clip on the axle. Any input on this from other people with the LSR axle set up?

Like the big axle nut should be able to thread most of the way out, there will be quite the gap between the locking nut and sprocket as shown in this picture of mine 209728

Thats not how it is supposed to be. The spacer actually cups around the cir clip so it doesn't fall off, see pic of ATV on Demand's 250R with the LSR axle. Your just asking for trouble not having that spacer cup around and hold that cir-clip from coming off.

Samjp22
02-05-2015, 08:10 PM
I'm using the factory spacer the cups around/over the snap ring and it's still fully torqued to spec. The distance from the sprocket hub to the groove is exactly the same or damn near on the stock and LSR axle. All I see that spacer doing is allowing more threads to be on that threaded sleeve with the splines inside it.

02-05-2015, 08:17 PM
Ok, I was confused there. I thought you were saying that your not running the spacer. LOL. I have the Axle nut pretty far screwed into it self right now. Tonight I will see how close the axle nut will get to the c clip groove on the axle.

Samjp22
02-05-2015, 08:22 PM
That's how it was when I first got it! No spacer and instead of using the proper snap ring the guy had these two big cir-clips in that groove, the whole axle would slide back and forth about 1/8 inch!

Wow!!! That can get really dangerous!! I am ordering some more stuff for this thing on Saturday. All new pistons for the calipers because there shot, and some other MISC items I do not have. May be ordering a front fender as well depends on how much I get this pay check. If anyone has an 86 250r seat foam/ pan I need one!!! foam must be in good shape, it can need a new cover, thats totally fine.
Thanks guys

I can't help you with the pan, but if you can just find a pan, you can get NEW foam and cover done up real nice by Cosmic Quads! (Mrs. Mosh). I have 2 of her seats and she does excellent work!

Nope it actually fits pretty good, there close but it is indeed in the flat spot, thanks for your concern. Here is the ebay listing. http://www.ebay.com/itm/HONDA-ATC200X-ATC250R-ATC350X-ATC-200X-250R-350X-RENTHAL-ALUMINUM-HANDLEBARS-/400464256553?pt=Motors_ATV_Parts_Accessories&hash=item5d3d879e29&vxp=mtr

Sam- I unthreaded the axle nut and it came up good and close to the groove in the axle for the cir clip, looks like were good to go once I get that spacer/cir clip holder!! :beer

Also, the pistons are still available OEM from the factory for the front. The fronts will fit in the rear with a little modifications. Ive been talking to Jim (FlyingW) about this quite a bit, maybe he will chime in.

ASV's should be here next week, and should be buttoning up my brakes in the next couple weeks.
Motor was shipped off to BDT to be built last monday so now I gotta keep saving my pennies!!

Yea your probably not to much farther then a few hours away thcowboy.. To find these things all you gotta do is drive around in the country side and ask around for 3 wheelers. Everyone knows where a 3 wheeler is, eventually you'll find a 200x or maybe even a 250r! And I dont think to many people besides me will be riding it :) , Ill let you sit on it if that counts!!

Thanks for the compliment Angelo!

Couple things I am going to do to it this winter is send the cylinder off to Rob Selvy to have him finish up the water jacket mod. She runs a little bit hot, so that will be addressed in a couple weeks. Also going to get the Unhinged ATV foot pegs for it and just keep the nerf bars for when I am racing down at Hutchinson. Id also like to get an hour gauge for it so I can monitor how many hours I am putting on it.

Next trip planned for it is 3 wheeler week in California, going to hit up the 2 National 3 wheeler races then off to the Invasion. So excited!

Great use of different colors and great attention to detail, and even though it is a Honda I like it. http://www.mustang.org.au/forum/Smileys/smilies/thumbsup.gif

Also, great photos.

You are also running the same exact rear tires in your race that I ran in all my races except for the first two where I ran the stockers . . Jimmy White actually gave me the tires and rims and I hole shot lots of races with them.

What rear tires do you have in the sand photo, it looks like Scat Trak Edge or Sand Sharks except for the little points on top of the paddles?

Your off road headlight setup is also nice, and is similar or the same as what I think oscarmayer should be running on his Baja bike because all he has is a small Chinese LED lite bar which will be decent enough for cruising around at night but far from enough lite when riding unknown territory at up to maybe 60 mph at night which has bumps and holes and turns and bushes and rocks etc...been there, done that, wasn't fun.

Happy Thanksgiving

Its an annual quad race that Daryl Rath has a big part in and he got us hooked up with a trike class. It was last August. I have some but the camera was pointed way to low and most of the view is all tank and bars.
