My 1984 atc 110 makes a weird slapping sound in 3rd gear. Anyone know what it could be?

I wonder if there's an easy way to post an audio or u tube type
sound byte?
Ok
Only in 3rd?
both acceleration AND deceleration?
does it change with brake lightly applied while under power?

Hi range or low? or both?
could it be the main drive chain flopping in that most comfortable on/off stress
zone of the power band?

All the time in 3rd. High and low.

check your drive chain, check your timing chain, if ti was a gear, you would feel it not hear it. it would feel like a skip/hop and the bike would shudder every time.

It only does it in 3rd gear, that's why I ruled out stuff like that. Is it possible that something in the transmission is hitting the case?

could be or a chipped gear, but usually you would "feel" the bike shudder not just make a noise.

have you ruled out the chains yet? if not jsut check chain tension and and timing chain slack and adjust per manual and see fi that helps. if nothign else it helps rule those out.
last time i had a bad gear (chipped) it felt like someone banged on the engine every time it came around to that tooth. and the problem got worse as it was ridden. so i would halt riding till you resovle this jsut to make sure you don't end up with something bad.

Have you ever clutch started it in 3rd? This will chip a gear and this is what I think your problem is.

Whatever is wrong with it, I didn't do. I just got it. I guess I'll just keep riding it until I have a real issue.
