ok, some of you know I picked up a 350x from the original owner when I lived in Cali 2 years ago. Well, it is now time to start working on it.
oem fenders in great shape, tank dented and creased so not worth fixing, and stock motor in excellent shape with great compression.(not gonna open it for now just replace oil seals I can get too and clutch discs and seals)
So I always wanted to do a black with blue ATC. so this is going to be my project.
Here are some photos of how it sits right now and in the process of being torn down and tested for running before I do final tear down for redo of the frame. I will have the forks rebuild with progressive rated springs, rear shock rebuild for 200lb rider and looking for a +2 extended rear and performance rear axle.
I'll update as I go alone, but I wanted to show what is done. the handlebars are rental bars so I will keep them and I swapped the old worn stock brake and clutch levers for ones from a trx450r setup. so they will be newer Honda stuff and not worn. I am thinking of keeping the e-brake because I like the fact of being able to put the trike in my truck bed and lock the brakes and it not roll around w/o strapping it. (do this a lot with my son's racing quad when we are local w/o trailer.)
Anyway I hope ya'll enjoy my thread.
oh, one more thing, I'm swapping the 85 rear sprocket setup to a 86 for better stability and less issues when done.
well, black and blue here I come....

ok, been doing some research, I defiantly want to redo the forks and have the rear shock redone, I'm wanting a +4 adjustable rear axle and +2 rear swing arm. My goal is tto have this done in 2 months along side my son's new racing quad I'm building. He's not gonna like dad chasing him on an old trike while he rides a new quad on the track and can't loose me. LOL.
I'm going to use a mikuni 38mm round slide carb. it is smaller, lighter and easier to work with than an 400ex carb.
I am now debating on the motor. I am thinking maybe a top end refresh with porting the head, wiseco 12:1 piston and custom cam and springs with hardened rockers. any thoughts?
Anyway, right now I'm just getting it "running" to ensure it is with the $.

Well I would go.with 10.25.piston.Use a 400ex carb over the Mikuni.Definately port.and polish the head. After you have the crank redone. It will just break on you.Or stay with stock motor.

^ that's a long swinger! I only wanted +2 cause I am planning on MX racing it. I am looking at the 300ex axle stuff. I found one that the hubs are removable which means they can be adjusted to align up how ever I need it too. for under $200 shipped!!!! (thanks tusk!!!)
so now onto the swinger. that is going to be the hard part.. :( Thanks a ton for your help. that did give me some ideas.
=================================
jays375, you think the bottom end will let go with a 12:1? hrmm interesting. not doubting you as I have never built a racing 350, but do you have any stuff I can look a that discusses thus? I never had an issue with a Honda running 12:1 pistons before in any machine as long as the bottom end is tight. this one is very tight. again I'm not doubting ya, but I would like to investigate that info if you have any details for me, please share.
why the 400ex over the mikuni? I understand about the accelerator pump, but I need adjustability for the track side was my reasoning. the stocker carbs are not easy to adjust in my opinion.
i'll probably leave engine stock for now and purchase performance parts later for the motor. right now is the chassis, suspension, and brake systems being upgraded. I am looking to see what rear brake I can install that is larger and better than stock. I can fab an adapter to sue the stocker mounting system but just need to look to see what is out there that will work.

Have you thought about getting your stock swinger extended? Some guys on here may do it kinda close to you? Or do it yourself? Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't KASEY make custom swingers?

Bare in mind the 300ex carrier axle swap will not line up the sprocket side with motor sprocket without shimming or spacers. Mine looks to be almost 1/2" off, axle sprocket needs shimmed towards carier. 350x brake hub slid on,looks like it will work. Keepin an eye on your thread, got one going myself on a 350x.

^ good to know, my thoughts are if nothing else, i an always shave down some of the sprocket holder down on the side where it goes to the carrier if needed from a friend's machine shop.

ok torn down to just the frame and I can see battle scars. one of the rear sections is slightly bend down (from a roll over accident). So I will have to get that taken care of and will be installing a gusset kit. I sourced a local whom can redo the forks and rear shock for a good deal. now to start the ordering process.
steering stem bearing upgrade is a must along with other goodies. engine will remain stock for the time being aside from exhaust and carb.
I will get frame powder coated black and will have only a few items that will be dark blue. I want to get the wheels hard anodized. So now I have to source a place that can do that as well.
so in short:
black front and rear fenders
black tank
black frame
black engine
dark blue nerf bars
blue fork boots
black forks
dark blue anodized wheels
blue lines and hoses
blue cable covers and blue braided brake lines
few engine items turned blue anodized to match wheels (or maybe polished, have not decided that 1 yet)
black handle bars
dark blue triples
dark blue grab bar to match nerfs
what do ya'll think so far? my only other option is to do black and polished alloy stuff. but then the seat cover is a tricky one to do. hrmm well guess all black cover would work but that would be a lot of black.
you guys decide for. replace blue with polished above. and handle bars will be polished as well as triples.

this morning, I straightened the one rear section of the frame, and then completely dissembled the swinger. so it is now ready for any work to be done to it. I will be ordering a 350x tpc gusset kit to re-enforce the frame.

ok, so i ordered a billet bearing carrier, and 300ex axle I am going to have a machine shop work on the axle so it fits correctly in my carrier like stock.
ordered several other items as well. so it is on it's way. I also dropped off the suspension to a well know place near my home. Suspension Dynamics. the guy knows his stuff and will be rebuilding and re-valving them for my type of riding as well as size. There is also something called a flow emulator that simulates rebound adjustment capabilities. so this will help enhance the forks as well.
will keep everyone updated.

I am using Progressive springs with the Gold.Valves.Also about 14 1/2 ounces of 20wt.fork oil.The front forks work very well.

^ good to know. if the suspension guy ask about it, i'll pass this info along.
mine will be a track/trail riden. i will not be jumping and racing, but i will follow my kid around the mx track while he practices.

update:
I found an awesome guy locally that can extend my swinger +2 w/o any issues. He could also build a custom swinger for the 350 at $600 each all chromoly tubing with a ladder style support system. Now a bad deal. that will be my next upgrade later He told me, he can do them even in Alloy if I wanted. ($150 more)
it is stripped to the frame. end of the month I am ordering gusset kit.
I received my new billet bearing carrier, new 38mm mikuni carb, and several other goodies. Once everything is in, I'll take some photos.

Are you ordering your gusset kit from TPC? If so better order it now, I don't know if you saw that other members thread but he ordered a kit months ago and he still hasn't got it
oscarmayer

hrmmm, whom else sells gusset kits then? I cannot wait that long for a kit.
I decided to call TCP. they said they had spent the last 2 months moving shop and a couple of orders did get messed up and that was their fault and they felt bad about it. He said in a week or 2 things will be 100% back to normal.

Got the all balls kit in for both steering stem and front wheel bearings. i will be taking the wheels over to get new rubber pout on all the way around, I got a hold of an original kedena front wheel (same as the 200x) that I will be mounting on the front and a nice set or rears. (6-ply)
so if all goes well, end of the month I will be ordering my gusset kit and will be installing it. the get frame, swinger and a few odds and ends coated.

I get the swinger back this weekend!!! so I can start assembly with new bearings and such.

well so far things are going ok. I have the axle (the tusk sprocket hub is removable easily with a clip so I can have it turned down the 1/2 " needed to fit for the 350X. YEA TUSK!!!!!
got the new bearing carrier assembly in, tons of odds and ends from new cables, to swinger and wheel bearings for the front. Also got some SS brake lines to help with stopping better as well as looks. I need to order a caliper rebuild kit for the front and rear calipers as well as rear master rebuild kit.
I still need to get the sprocket, chain and rear ring gear assembly. rear ring gear needs to be for a 300ex.but no biggie.
swinger is done and is now +2 I just need to get it from the shop and have it blasted and prepped for powder as well.
i'll post photos this weekend.
