I was in the new member forum and saw this post.

http://www.3wheelerworld.com/showthread.php/172056-New-Member-from-Southern-AZ

Then went online and found this webpage. The very last class listed is ATC!! I am hoping baja500bound will be able to post more details of his desert trike and details as we get closer to the race!!

This is epic news. I know its just a rally but they will be hauling pretty fast out there. Its a step in the right direction for 3 wheeler racing. Next will be the Score 1000, The holy Grail of off road racing.

First and foremost, thank you to Mr. Clean for starting this thread as I was still under my 10 post minimum. A special thanks to Billy Golightly for offering up his help and support!!

So yes, myself and two other guys have registered a 1985 250r in the 2015 NORRA Mexican 1000. All three of us are avid desert racers with myself and one other team member having successfully raced a dirt bike in the 2006 Baja 500 and 2010 Baja 1000. We've clicked those items off the bucket list and started looking for our next adventure. Two years ago, we started tossing around the idea of racing in the Mexican 1000 but since we had already done something similar on a motorcycle, we weren't really sure what we would race. How the idea of racing an ATC came up is kinda fuzzy as we usually discuss such things around the camp fire and well we all know the beverage of choice around a camp fire. As the original plan began to grow, we made the mistake of bringing too many people into the mix. When it came time to start funding this project, people started dropping like flies and ultimately the idea was dropped.

Now fast forward to New Years 2013/14 and as always a camp fire was involved. We made the decision to raise the ATC plan once again but this time, we would keep it at three racers only. We began funding this project and started some planning but nothing as of yet was actually set in stone until New Years 2014/15 where we submitted our registration. Once we registered, we were locked in and ready to move forward.

And this is where we are now. Over the weekend of 1/17 we tore the ATC down to the bare frame and split the motor. We’ll be doing a full rebuild of all components as well as having an extra motor that we can rob from if need be. We’ll have two chase trucks and a crew of about 6 people helping us out. The best part of NORRA is that although it’s a point to point race, we’re able to stop each night and work on the bike. This should help us out significantly in respect to bike maintenance.

I’ll be sure to post updates as they become available and we have a facebook page that can be followed as well (https://www.facebook.com/DynamicallyUnstableRacing).

Thank you to everyone for your support and well wishes!! It’s gonna be pretty freakn’ awesome!! :)

I forgot to mention. The name of the team is Dynamically Unstable Racing (D.U.R.). We found some info about the Honda Motor Co. lawsuit in 1987 siting that ATC's had a design flaw and that they were Dynamically Unstable. Dynamically Unstable Racing was formed.. :)

Where is the ghost they call Cafro? Havent seen or heard of him in a bit.

Saw Carmen this weekend at Lake Elsinore. I asked him what he thought about the trike class in the Mexican 1000.

His response: "Ya know, 1000 miles is really f***** far..."

For those of you that dont know, Carmen has won the SCORE Baja 500 and 1000 multiple times on multiple machines.

All I can say is Wow!! The amount of support we've received from the ATC community has been overwhelming. Most people start with a "You must be nuts!" but then end with a "Good Luck, We're rooting for ya!!" kinda thing.

Most importantly, I want to give a huge and sincere thank you to Billy and 3WW for it's sponsorship and support! Those decals are freak'n awesome and rest assured that those bad boys will be stuck to as many walls as possible from Ensenada to Cabo. We won't be making it to Mikes Sky ranch this trip but a 3 Wheeler World decal will surely be on the wall at Rice and Beans in San Ignacio.

To say that we're excited about this adventure is a definite understatement. As we're getting closer and closer (84 days - 22 hours - 38 minutes) the Task list seems to be growing rather than shrinking. Thankfully, we've all raced in Baja before so we have a pretty good program setup. Most importantly, my teammates are great guys that really have their sh.t together.

Once again, to Billy and to all the 3WW community, Thank you!!!

I won't be able make Imperial Invasion this year but hopefully next year I can put it on my Dune calendar. I'm sure we'll have some camp fire worthy stories about our adventure.

Like our facebook page as well (www.facebook.com/DynamicallyUnstableRacing) for more information/pictures.

sweet! i am starting my planning now!!!! Ahh man, does that mena i have to loose my sweet tea gut too? Dang it... :/ LOL j/K!! being in shape is as important to racing as anything else!
to be honest, I plan to be the solo rider on it. I am from the old school that solo rider per race unless it is a 24 hr enduro style. So yea i better get into shape eh?
I have a yr to get ready, so well let me know how it goes, and what I should look at bringing as well as things to consider for the ride.
I am thinking of running slime int he tires to cut down on flats. what are your thoughts?

If Billy or anyone else has a donation set up you can count me in! I wish I had time to play with my toys more. In 99 I took my Jeep on a road trip to Cabo San Lucas from SEA...... I can't imagine doing it on a trike but it sounds like lots of fun!

Once again, we are overwhelmed with the generosity of the 3 Wheeler World community. Thank you to everyone for the support from a healthy pat on the back to offering up beer money. Because we've had requests of "Where to send money", we setup a PayPal account. To be clear, we are not soliciting money for this adventure and have graciously and humbly accepted any funds that have been given to us.

The show of support has been unreal. So, if you feel like you would like to contribute to this adventure, our team PayPal account is dynamicallyunstableracing@gmail.com .

Please point out how you would like the money spent (ex Beer money) and we'll do exactly that (barring Hooker/Stripper :) ).

The 3WW community is awesome and I'm looking to put Imperial Invasion on next years dune calendar. Hopefully Brian the owner of the 250r can bring it out to the dunes and show off some of its battle scars (Hopefully not too many.. :) ).

Every day we’re amazed and humbled by the number of people sending us everything from a hearty pat on the back to actual cash donations. Honestly, we’re just three guys that love racing in Baja, Racing an ATC just seemed like the next logical step. :)

Along with those wishes of luck, we’ve also received several requests for T-Shirts. Most importantly, we’re honored that anyone would actually want one of our shirts.

Because of all the requests, we’re very excited to offer the Official Dynamically Unstable Racing T-Shirt. This will be the same shirt the racers and crew take all the way to Cabo.

The site that’s managing the billing and shipping is associated with Cafepress.com. What they refer to as a “Fundraiser” will end on March 2nd and at that time, shirts will begin shipping. If you choose to purchase a shirt, you should not expect to see it until Mid-March.

We’re not out to make a profit on this so we’ve set the purchase price at $15.00.

Once again, thank you 3WW for all the Support and well wishes!! Rest assured that we will do everything in our power to get that ATC down to Cabo.

I'll buy one as soon as you get it back up and running.
How about some racer on the back like last names with #? that would be awesome!

I love all the press you guys are getting, totally awesome!!!!

have you thought about installing a 2nd set of radiators or having a double rowed one built? water cooled engines in that heat will need all the help they can muster. They also make a "fuel line" cooler that helps cool fuel line. IMS makes a larger than stock fuel tank if you have not check it out yet. i know you guys are smart and knwo your stuff, just trying to think of anything outside the box so to speak of that hits me up in questions.

does the race run at night too or just day racing? tryingto see if lights are needed or not.

oh , sorry last question for a while (sorry lol) are you keeping the thumb throttle or swapping to a twist? for my 350x i am planning on installing a twist on it for the race and run it a few times at a local track to get used to the twister over thumb. i think fo rlong riding twist woudl be better for me, but not sure if you guys are doing the same.

Oscamayer,

I'm still dealing with TFund to get the shirt sales going again. We have written permission to use the Logo's but it's been a slow process. I'm hoping they have all the information they need and will open it back up soon.. Fingers crossed!! We're desert racers, all this T-Shirt/logo/grapics stuff is all "New and Exciting".. :)

We haven't talked about radiators but you're right, heat is always a serious issue and it's something we'll need to talk about. We're working with IMS to get the biggest baddest gas tank that we can install. They've been great to work with and their customer service equals their product quality. Absolutely nothing but positive things to say about IMS.

In regards to running at night; NORRA runs their race a little different than SCORE. With SCORE (What we know as the Baja 1000) once you start, you keep going until you hit the finish line. With NORRA, each day there is what's called the special tests (Which are the timed sections) with transfer sections (generally black top) connecting them until you reach the end of that days course (Just like the Dakar Ralley). This year, the bikes leave Ensenada and race to El Rosario on April 25th. We keep racing down the Baja peninsula until we hit Cabo on April 29th. That's when the party starts... :) If all goes as planned, we will not be racing at night.. Once again fingers crossed!!

We'll be running a twist throttle. It makes the most sense in regards to comfort and we're all used to running a twist throttle.

The 350x should be a great Desert weapon! Fuel economy is huge!! You're right on track starting the planning process now. With three of us working various aspects of this race, the task list is slowly getting smaller.

No need to apologize for questions, happy to share!!! :)

Thanks,
-Craig

The 13.5 lb lighter frame is a drag build frame with the thin wall chromoly. Not what you would want to use in desert or
mx racing. Dave also makes a mx version, but its not much lighter than stock.

Thanks!!! I sure hope that we'll just be the first of many ATC's to do this race. Who knows, maybe we can actually make it a race if we can get enough entered.

Yes, the Back tube is for storage. NORRA states that we need to carry at least one days worth of food and water on the bike so that will take up most of the room. We'll also carry some misc spares of small items that will get us through any trouble.

As for the number, 3 Wheels x 3 id10ts = 9 ... :)

Bwaaahahahaha NICE!!! I love it!!!!

I did not know about the food. Thanks. MREs will be on my menu then. I'll do a "combat" strip of them for the race.

What parts do you recommend? I was thinking plug, some sort of air device to air the tires up. A tube (in case you get a gash to big for slime to seal in the tire), a bottle full of fuel and one of oil. This is not including the tools and food you mentioned. What do you think?

Keep me posted on your ideas on this stuff. I will learn from you master Yoda. Teach this "Grasshoppa" the ways of the BAJA! ;-)

I'll keep you in the loop. We're not sure exactly what will fit in it so as of right now, the only thing for sure is food/water. Hopefully we'll have the route soon which will allow us to plan our pit strategy as well as our rider changes. When we all come back together again, we'll be stuffing the pipe with cool things.

Stand by on the full list.

The format of NORRA Mexican 1000 is such that if we're out after dark, something has gone terribly wrong. With that in mind, we'll have the stock headlight and helmet lights if we have to go into "get back" mode. For the SCORE Baja 1000, high powered lights are a necessity, for the NORRA M1K, not so much.

Thanks!!! I've said it many times, the 3WW community has been absolutely awesome!! The amount of support and "Pats on the back" have been truly inspiring. Although I am an owner of a 83 110, I have to admit my personal ATC inventory is a little on the weak side. Because the 3WW community has been so great, I've already begun a search for my own 250r for the sole purpose of attending Imperial Invasion next year. I'm an avid duner and I'm ready to join in with the 3WW community.

As for updates/pictures etc. We've mounted a SPOT (GPS Tracker) to the front of the ATC that will update a web page every 10 minutes showing our location. I'll post a link in this forum as well as on our facebook page. I know that some of the hotels we're staying at have internet but not all of them so updates may be short. Unfortunately, updating to Facebook will be the easiest and quickest so be sure to "Like" the facebook page for our latest updates.

Once again, Thank you again 3WW!! You people are great and I hope I have the pleasure of meeting you in person some day.

We're just 4 short days from clicking first gear in the 2015 NORRA Mexican 1000. The bike is done, the spare and pit boxes are built and we're ready to go. It's gonna be one hell of a ride and to say I'm stoked is definitely an understatement. :)

If anyone is interested in following our progress, I've included a link to our SPOT GPS Tracker. The location will update every 10 minutes and if all goes as expected, it will keep on moving. I've also attached a link to the Chase maps. The official course hasn't been released yet but by looking at the maps, you can get a basic idea of where we'll be racing. Finally, the picture shows the schedule of each day and the anticipated start times. We'll probably get the SPOT started early each morning so if it doesn't appear to be moving, stand by as we're likely in line at the start.

Thanks again to everyone and I'll try to post updates whenever possible.

what does special 1 and special 2 and transit stage mean? sorry I never did this before so i am confused on what it all means.

No need to apologize!! Because NORRA does the race as a rally (a timed event) there are sections where you're racing (Called a special) and there are times when you're in a speed restricted area (Transfer/Transit) used to connect the Specials. The transfer/transit section is usually a public highway/town etc where you wouldn't want people racing. When racing with SCORE, a road section has a speed limit and if it's exceeded, you'll incur time penalties. Not sure about NORRA but it's best to follow the speed limit whenever possible while on the public roads.

oscarmayer
04-22-2015, 02:14 PM
Thanks a ton for that info! Makes more sense now.
do people try to take advantage of their position in the transit area and gain spots or are people usually honest and stay in position? I am asking because I was wondering if I needed to be aware of racers when in the transit and them trying to sneak past for better positioning.

Since you're not racing in the transfer sections, the order in which you arrive at the next Special doesn't matter. Since you're racing the clock you can take your time getting to the next special. Not too much time because stages do have a "Close" time where you would "Hour-Out" and ultimately DNF for that special or possibly that day.

NORRA may do something different but in a couple weeks, I'll have a better understanding and I'm be happy to pass the info along.

With all the pictures that we took, it's been a serious challenge to find just a few to share. Last week, I was finally able to put together a quick slide show of our adventure. The pictures aren't showing us screaming across the desert but they do show a group of people that love going to and racing in Baja. Regardless if you're racing or not, I would recommend a trip to Baja and experience first hand the pure beauty of the area and of the people. It's an amazing place and when you can share it with some great people, it just makes it that much better.

Below are two link to the same slide show. One contains some explicit language and the other has the foul language stripped out. The Dynamically Unstable Racing team is a little rough around the edges at times but at the end of the day, we're a team and most of all, Friends.

I hope everyone enjoys the slide show and a very quick glimpse of what we saw.

Thanks!!
