I built my 85/86R back in 09 as a spare trike for the Oklahoma ride. It quickly became my preferred 2 stroke ride. When I built it, I didn't even have a complete motor among the three rollers I bought. Out from that pile came Whiskey Bent and R Force One. I built it with fresh soft parts but it was all rattlecan. Whiskey Bent has been a very good running trike but it had a bad habit of overheating on high rev slow moving trails. I know I overheated it on more than a few occasions but yet when I popped the top on the motor, the piston still look pristine. I couldn't be happier. The motor will get refreshed but I'm going to leave the cylinder and piston alone. The chassis has been powder coated, all the rubber parts cleaned and refreshed. I went through the electrical harness and cleaned it up as well. Right now my lower fork tubes are out to be polished, my tank is at Mr. Cleans house for polishing, and my rear shock is being rebuilt by Schmidty's Racing. My carb went to Fire1 for polishing and its on its way back. I had all the hardware (bolts and brackets) and rear axle in for replating. I'm adding a few upgrade parts this round like billet carrier, Fad nut, skid plates, grab bar, and plastic.
Now my admitted screw up....
WB originally was painted with Hemi Orange rattlecan. It was one of the colors used on the General Lee besides Hugger Orange and Red Flame (Corvette Orange). Being the dork I am, ran across a Prismatic Flame Red and I thought, "Perfect" so I ordered it. Dummy me should have shot a test sample before I took the frame and swingarm to my powder coater...... ITS RED NOT ORANGE......
In fact, its a perfect match to the Fighting Red Maier plastic color..... Oh Well!!!!!! it still looks good.

When I was working out of my toolbox on airplanes, the drawers had to be numbered and inventoried. I haven't worked out of my toolbox since 1998.

Even though I wasn't working on aircraft, I had many coworkers that still were and although allot of them had high end boxes, allot of the younger mechanics were buying the HF US General bottom boxes. For the money, not a bad toolbox.

Progress has been a little slow lately. Waiting for my lower fork tubes to get back from polishing along with my gas tank. I still haven't received my rear shock back from rebuild. I'm also waiting for a few straggler parts to come in. I am eager to get my chassis done so I can get in to the engine. Here's some pics of what I have so far.

I got my rear shock back from Rebuild. Got it installed and the back end all tightened up. Cleaned up the wiring at the back and checked out my electrical. I get my lower fork tubes back from polishing tomorrow and Mr. Clean will ship my tank back next week so its almost time to get in to the motor. Here's some more pics for you picture junkies.

The footpeg additions were made by 250RRoostmaster or something like that. Its been a while but I've tried to get in touch with him with no response. He used to sell the kits for 50 bucks. We need to find someone to cut some more of these out.

A similar footpeg setup can be had from Pro Armour if he can't be reached anymore. Beware, they are very sharp though.

I'll testify that having a wider peg is so much more comfortable on the foot.

The stock red color fades in time and has kind of an orange tinge to it anyway so it looks like a brand new aged red. Love it.
I like the way the orange flames tie in with the orange frame. Orange headlight area would be a nice touch too with orange caps for valve stems.

Well this time there is no orange except for the hour meter and lettering on the rear fender. Read post 1 for the reason. I got my new front tire today so I polished the front rim, mounted the tire and hung it on the freshly polished forks. I'm still waiting for Streamline to get me my brake lines I ordered weeks ago but I did get the caliper mounted. Tomorrow I will pickup my muffler can I'm having painted with high temp paint so the expansion chamber and muffler will match.

I bought my plastic set from ZMPerformance on Ebay. Today I got my tank back from polishing and mounted it up. The shrouds fit is absolutely horrible. The lines between the tank and shroud is so irregular. I just ordered a set of OEM shrouds....... This isn't the first time I've bought plastic from ZM or Maier.

Fantastic, Beautiful, Stunning & Gorgeous!
I recently bought OEM shrouds that would not even bolt on to one of my OEM tanks. Fit fine on the other.
I just swapped tanks on the machine that i wanted the OEM shrouds for. They are kind of problematic.
I was looking at the same color from Prismatic Powders. I got the swatch for it. Still debating on that one or Passion Red..??
That is one fine machine you have there.

I'll say that the Prismatic Flame Red is a perfect match to the Maier Fighting Red and it also matches the tank given its current color after age and polishing. I couldn't have matched all this stuff if I tried.

To clarify my statement about ZMPerformance. ZM buys their plastic directly from Maier and allot of what they sell are blems so naturally they get them at a bulk/reduced cost so when buying from ZM, be sure you read all the print carefully. The Ebay ad for mine did not state the plastic set had any blems in it so I assumed they were firsts. I may be wrong but I did send Maier a message telling them the fit was bad and I want to see what their response is going to be. I bought new plastic for R Force One when I built it and although the fit on those shrouds was ok, there were some irregular lines on it but not too bad. The blue plastic was a special order thing in case you're wondering.

Had the same problem with my shrouds from maier. My OEM shrouds fit perfect on my black Clarke tank but the maier shrouds did not. Just trimmed them up along then edge and now they fit fairly decent and even on both sides

I still have a few set lying around. The mounting hardware became harder to find and i had a few members not happy with the hardware they got i set so i bagged the whole thing. I can still make them though..

Toledo Honda delivered my Honda shrouds in record time. Got them installed. HUGE differance in fit between Honda shrouds and Maier shrouds. I also got my rear rims cleaned up, tires mounted, and back on the trike. The only thing I'm short on the chassis is my brake lines but other than that, its ready to go. Tomorrow I'll get my motor out and get it torn apart.

Just out of curiosity. I was always told I couldn't powder coat an engine due to the coat being plastic and would blister and come off. Were they wrong or is there high temp powder coat now? I would live to powder coat my engine on my 185s with a 200x piston and cam in it.

I was told the same thing way back when but I never listen. I have powder coated several motors and except for the first one I did, I haven't had any problems. In the case of the 250R being water cooled, if my coolant is overheating then the motor temp is only about 260deg. Cure temp for the powder I'm using is 400deg. My SX motor I did with the same gloss black powder is holding up very well. The first motor I powdered, I wasn't preheating the parts so the metal didn't get to full cure temp. When I got the trike running, the powder heated up and softened then cured so there was some dirt that settled in to the paint. If we stuck to high temp powder, our choices would be very very limited and the little I've played with high temp powder, tells me its not a good finish. No gloss, chalky, and uneven texture. High temp powder needs to be done very exactly. Krylon high temp spray paint is only good to 500deg so unless somebody can convince me not to use the powder I am, I will continue to use it.

Now, with that said, I did powder coat an SX muffler with the same gloss black powder. Epic fail....... When the engine was pushed to its temp limits, the powder on the muffler turned back in to a liquid. It was a mess. Drips and stuff so head pipes and mufflers should be done with a high temp coating whether its a topcoat, ceramic, or powder. I had my pipe and muffler can painted with an 1800deg topcoat.

Got my motor put together tonight. Nothing special. Basically a stock motor with Boysen reeds, third bore, TRX carb, TRX clutch upgrade, Billet exh flange, and Woods type 6 pipe. Plenty fast enough for this old man. I'm still waiting for my brake lines but they say they shipped last week so I'm hoping Monday. The last time I rode it I realized the clutch was toast. I've beat the hell out of the old clutch taking my R in places it should have never have gone. I think I paid 30 bucks for the plates so I got my monies worth out of that clutch. The top end looked fantastic so I left it alone but I did replace the main crank bearings and seals.

I went ahead and set the motor in its cradle. I have to make a few new brackets to get the pipe squared up on the flange.

Looks bad @$$$! Had a question about the powder coat though- doesn't the powder hold heat so on say a 350x engine wouldn't it be better not to powder it?

Today I made some new brackets to support the muffler. I tried to install the radiator hoses and ran I to a few issues with the GPI Silicone hoses. The hose that goes between the top right radiator to the lower left radiator is about 2 inches too short. The short hose that goes between the right lower radiator and the water pump was sitting up against the pipe but trimming that one fixed that problem. As for the long hose, I can get it to connect to the lower left radiator but its pulled right up against the CDI and plug wiring. Nothing I could do about that so I decided to use the two OEM long hoses and the two GPI short hoses. You can't see the long ones anyway so screw it. A word of advice when using the silicone hoses, have your pipe mounted in its final position before fitting the hoses.

To some degree yes, Powder Coat does act as an insulator but if you keep the PC as thin as possible mitigates that problem. Regular paint will do the same thing if put on heavy enough. I have powder coated my SX engine and I haven't seen any over temp problems with it. As long as air flows between the cooling fins on your X, it shouldn't be a problem.

Where did you get the brake lines from?
Flyingw
03-14-2015, 11:33 AM
ATV Galaxy on Ebay but they had Streamline make them. It took a bit longer because I had emailed ATV Galaxy and asked them if Streamline had not made my lines yet to please call them and request an extra inch be added to both lines. Well they had made my lines but ATV Galaxy had them make me a fresh set up with the extra inch but that bumped my revised order to the back of the line. In the end I'm glad I had that inch added and the wait was worth it.
