ok so i was riding my bigred in the snow a couple of days ago and all of a sudden the shifter felt like it was loose on the shaft. i was having to pull it way up to get it in first and all the way down to the foot peg to get in reverse. sometimes it would not go in reverse. i checked the shifter and it is tight on the splines. i remember a while back someone describing a similar problem but i couldnt find the thread. any ideas? i have not checked clutch adjustment yet because it is very cold out and i dont have a indoor place to work. just trying to get some ideas before i go out in the cold

Pull off the left cover and you'll find the problem. It's always external linkage posts/springs/dowels blah blah blah but you'll find it there. I have had 100 motors apart and never found bent shift forks or a bad drum etc. etc. Bad gears when guys left out a thrust washer or didn't line up an oil orifice, but that's the mechanics fault.
Of course if the main clutch is slipping, just try the adjustment 1st. But any hang ups or no-shifts is found under that cover.
Numerous parts in there come loose or break off; Very common and cheap easy fix......

yes once it goes in gear its fine. no slip at all. i was just worried it was going to be internal and require case spiltting

it's the pin your shift spring rests on it's likely broke if you have a sloppy shifter

Yep , just put one in mine today. Good thing is a small screw driver spun it right out. Half hour and a new bolt/pin and back on the road.
