I ran across this on CL. It's been on there for awhile and I decided to shoot the guy an email about it. I've always been a four stroke guy and never got into the 2 strokers. I know nothing about this bike. Anybody give me some advice as to what I'm looking at? Is it a good deal? What's missing, things you notice when you see it, for you 250r gurus?

It has 200x front forks. Probably has slop in the steering neck. That front tire is rubbing the forks. Ask me how I know. That sucker looks pretty rough for the price. It looks to be missing a lot! Better or more pics would help.
Cut clutch cable
No headlight
Un attached throttle cable
I can't see a shifter.
I don't see a carb or intake.
Plastic is toast.
Dents in the gas tank
Missing a heat shield
800 is too much for that pile of parts. I bought mine for $650 running and riding. And 1st Gen R's are not common up here.

I have seen that CL listing for about a month...there might be a reason it hasn't sold yet. I am by no means an expert, but it looks like a lot of work and parts for $800.
I live in the DFW area and see quite a few Rs that are in better shape for just a little more $. If you like Tecates, you might look at this one:

At least it runs. I bought my 85R back in Jan for $750 off of CL. Granted, I have sunk at least that much into it since...but I still think I got a great deal for a running liquid R.
There are a LOT of guys here that can give you great advice, so listen to them...please. I just know that if you wait, you can find a really nice bike for a great price here in the Dallas area.
Hope that helps.

Go offer him 2 bills, if it costs to much to build it, at least you have parts for a better build or you can sell the parts off for more than 2 bills.

Go Green!
Parts arent as common as a 250r but most of it is acquirable.
Up here for 800-1000 you get a mint 2nd gen or a very nice 1st.
they don't sell to well up here tho. Its all about the liquid cooled rides haha.

IMO needs more work than what its worth.
Look for the later years like 84' its the last year of air cooled and set up better.
If your going to spend close to a $1000 make sure it runs or it will run.
keep on keepin on.....

I paid 150 for two 1st gen Rs. Lot of work needed but I ended up with two good parts bikes and two decent motors. Guess I'm a glutten for punishment. Building them is half the fun. 212096212096212097

I really like the 1st gen R's I have many of them. They are a great machine and are a blast to ride. If the guy would sell everything for in the $400 range I think you would be ok. But realize you will have to stick some time and money into it also.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'm gonna skip on it. I ran across a complete untouched 1981 250r that needs a clutch. Guy wants to trade me for my old boat. We'll see how it goes.
