View Full Version : '85 200X - protection for sprocket / rotor for woods riding?

Back on a three wheeler with a recent purchase of a pretty clean 200X. I ride woods, muddy trails with lots of exposed roots, few rocks here and there.
My 200X has no swingarm skidplate, and the mounting tabs are gone (clean - almost looks like the swingarm didn't have them to start with).
Does any existing sprocket and rotor guard work on the 200X?

Other solutions for mounting up a skidplate when the tabs are gone that doesn't involve a welder (I don't have one, and don't have the right kind of friends ;) so I'd have to pay for someone to weld up something for me).

Clamp on skidplate that I don't know about?

Been searching the archives here, and doing lots of google/bing searches, but not finding much on this specific topic other than weld on some new tabs for the skidplate.

Trying to find alternatives. Is drilling into the swingarm okay to generate mounting tabs for a skidplate since I"m trail riding?

Any help appreciated as I don't want to risk something going wrong until I get a skidplate or other protection for the sprocket and rotor in place.
Thanks!

I haven't had any issues with that, but what ever makes you feel good. And no, there are no mounts so you will have to weld mounts on and make a skid plate

Just be cautious around hazards. I ride my 85 200X with no skidplate and 18" turf tamers in similar terrain . The only problem I've had so far, was tossing my chain when i was high centered on a log.My. bike had a skidplate when i got it, but the mounting tabs cracked and the plate came off.

I'll likely have it out next weekend w/o a skid plate, as I can't wait to take it out. Bought some parts last night (new OEM grips, 8" rear wheels, rear fender decal). I'm not trying to restore it, but make it a nice, factory looking rider. It does have a Goki electric starter also. Tested it and it works, but need a new battery for it.

I think I will just get a PRM skid plate and drill into the swingarm to mount it unless someone tells me that is a horrible idea and I'll bend/break/ruin the swingarm by doing that?

Thx

I wouldn't drill into the swingarm... It will allow more water to get in there and will rust it from the inside out. It will also weaken it from the holes. 200x swingarms are cheap, I'm sure someone on here has one for sale that has the skidplate mounts.

weld skid plate mounts onto it or buy a swingarm with skid plate mounts.

Well if you want to get elaborate, you could get a normal skid plate, and get some metal. Bend one end over the swinger from around the top and the other a tab with a. Hole. Make is slightly shorter and when you tighten a bolt and nut through it to the skid it should pull it tight.
Honestly welding on places to bolt to is the best. This is a make shift and not sure how long it will last. Need to be strong thick steel to work.

they sponsor my son. call them and ask if you send them the 200x rear sprocket if they would drill the holes in the rappy 250 to fit on the 200x or better yet the TRX450R may fit right off the bat but send them a sprocket to test fit. as they may have something that already works. I bet they would do that for you.

Thanks for the tip; I will send in a sprocket next week, and have my guard soon after. Thanks again!

Just Mig weld a piece of 3/32nths (.0937 hot rolled flat plate), Beat it to a rough fit on a round log or anything, weld half in, beat it some more, weld and repeat. Your drain bolt and filter are on the left side so no biggie.......

My post above was for the motor/frame area. And you won't need a hole for an oil plug as yours is on the left side of the motor.

For the swinger, I'd use 3/16ths thick x 3/4 wide metal bent up to hold on a skidplate with 4 bolts. Weld nuts onto it so you can just bolt it on and go.

I have put a PRM .190thick skidplates on everything I own... And they take some serious abuse!!

Did PRM used to offer them for the 2nd gen 200x or is there another skid plate you can adapt?
