Ok i trade for a 85-86 Yamaha 225 trike today its a good running bike doesn't smoke but when u put in gear u have to throttle it up about half way before it will move now when its moving it doesn't slip it just takes a little throttle to start moving, I adjusted the clutches and didn't help it. I will say when u throttle it up when the clutches grab they are there it almost acts like a stall in a race car. anyways i would like to hear your advice and any help on this matter. thanks in advance, Jesse

The trike has two clutches. Look them up in a parts fiche to see them.

The first one, or primary clutch is a centrifugal clutch and it is the one you feel slipping until the trike moves and it can't be adjusted.

The secondary clutch works exactly like any conventional wet plate clutch, only the clutch is engaged until you move the shifter lever with your foot. The one and only adjustment this clutch has is a screw on the right hand side of the engine. The adjustment works the same way the perch adjustment does on a cable operated clutch.

If your secondary clutch is worn-out no amount of rpm's will make it engage, so if you have it adjusted properly it would seem your primary clutch is worn. They aren't cheap, but they are available. Depending on how much rpm's yours needs to lock up it may be fine, but you mentioned throttling up half way and then a little throttle. Big difference.

I lucked out and got a complete unit for a decent price a while back, Had I not I was thinking that maybe a place that rebuilds brake shoes could refurbish the clutch shoes and the drum could be filled with weld and re-cut. Not sure if it would be cheaper than new parts.

well what it does it takes about 1/4 to a little less than half throttle to start rolling but after that its pretty strong and it pulls like its sposed to, so i guess ill need a primary cluth then? thanks for the reply

I would say it's your primary for sure. I had to put a new one in my 200 and my old dx motor needed one for sure. It's a fairly easy fix but can be costly. I put a 250 timberwolf centrifugal clutch in and it works great now. They are cheaper and have a greater selection to choose from on eBay as well. Good luck!
