Why has nobody done this yet.. I never thought it would be possible but after watching this video and seeing all these dirtbikes converted to trikes.. it could very well be possible.

This seems like it would work really well for the main situation they showed: stuck in mud. A big red mudbogging would probably do really well. But on a 250R or 350X just riding around, I don't know how much it would do for you. Since these machines easily can lift the front wheel on acceleration already (with just two wheels driving) the third wheel up front won't offer much extra if anything since it can easily be lifted off the ground. Climbing a hill would be the same, it seems like your front end is already so light that the front tire just isn't going to add much to the situation.

I'd like to have seen a side by side of that bike launching next to a comparable one-wheel drive bike to see the difference.

I is amazing though how much they must have gone through to get that working.

Ever since I laid eye on the Rokon two wheel drive motorcycle, I have been toying with the prospect of making a
3WD Big Red. However, the way the system is set up on the Rokon would not work with a suspension system on the front end.
The only way to have a powered front wheel without going adjustment crazy, is to make it electric.
There are some pretty powerful electric hub motors available these days, there may be a way to take one and make it work with
a trike wheel. However, this mod would require that you carry two large batteries to make the motor work.

The image below shows the Rokon design, it works with it's own front end suspension because the suspension pivots
on the lower end on the horizontal plane versus the vertical plane the more common tube shocks work on.

There are sealed electric motors available for E-ATV's, but the max speeds are usually around 10-40kph.
If you are looking for a mudding feature, I would suggest going with a 10kph 6-10kw motor to give you
a huge torque factor vs speed.

Lithium iron cells would would. Light weight, very small, huge power output (enough to start cars and bikes), just not huge capacity. Don't get stuck for an hour!

I emailed christini a few months back actually asking this very question. Basically they said they can design just about anything. They sell kits that you can weld on yourself to do the dirtbike awd conversion..

Uncle tried to talk me into a front wheel drive bike using hydraulic motor.
Way before good electrics.
Now I want one to run after dark.

It would work that way as well. You would have to have a three position switch to flip from off to on and charge.
As ling as it is tied into the recharging wire/regulator already found in the wiring harness it should work without
any issues. You would have to also figure out the torque ratio of the rear drive to match the front end and try to
have the throttle activate the front wheel at the same time.

The design would work well if everything was electric, unfortunately working with a gas engine and electric motor can get tricky.
It would be cool to have something like that that worked though.

Well if they sell the kits then I don't see why it wouldn't be possible.

To convert your KTM or Honda motorcycle, we require either a frame exchange where you send in your current frame for modification, or the purchase of and additional AWD frame that fits your bike. The cost of a KTM frame is market dependent and the Honda frame is a additional $500. -straight from their site. The honda kit costs about 3500 and i would assume that is without the new frame.

Anybody care to spend about 4 grand and make an awd trike =D

Why bother with batteries?
Fit the electric motors to all wheels, and the generator to the output shaft from the engine.

I like the 3 wheel principle but I doubt I would use it very often. Those Chritini kits for dirtbikes have a lever on the handlebar so you switch from on and off all wheel drive on the fly. So you just use it as needed.

Hydraulics Yamaha was making these in 2001 for the baja/drakar races.
