what would cause water to leak from this hole?

not familiar with 250r weep hole but when a water pump seal goes bad they usually have a weep hole to let coolant out.

That's the TELL hole. Coolant leaking from there tells you the mechanical seal is bad. Order a water pump rebuild kit. You have to take the clutch cover off and remove the old mechanical seal cup and install a new one.

Oh, there is also a ceramic seal in the kit that goes on the back of the impeller. The ceramic seal should not be handled with bare hands. They are considered white glove. Handling the ceramic seal with your bare hands leaves oils from you skin and causes galling on the seal surface. If you do handle the seal, rinse with rubbing alcohol after installing it in the impeller.

never heard that about the ceramic parts of those mechanical seals before. learn somethin everyday. No wonder they always failed on my Suzuki...lol

I tried rebuilding one once...you better be really good/careful when rebuilding those waterpump assemblies. My first try I screwed up my rebuild and that seal is stupid expensive. So I said screw it and sent it to BDT for a rebuild. I had it out there and back in 1.5 weeks.

It's not that difficult to replace the mechanical seal.
