I need a fork oil amount for a 84's 250 r and my Big Red 250es 85'. If you have what wt. and the amount please let me know. None of the Honda shops have books on them anymore.

Hey Mickey, in my sig is a link to download factory service manuals in PDF format, it should have all that info in them if that helps?
If nothing else, Talk to onforumul1, he can probably spit that info out in his sleep. LOL

I run synthetic atf in my 350x forks feels great and hasn't leaked a drop in the months of abuse i put it through. Cant remember how much to put in though.

I always set mine up with a tool that sucked out the oil with the springs out so many mm's with the forks bottomed out but that was 30 years ago on my 200x, which has 250 forks, so I'm a bit at a loss. I think I ran 15wt, but this also has the fork kit in it also.

Mickey here you go-
85 250es 137mm from the top springs out.
84 250r 177mm from the top springs out.
On the 250es you can play up or down 5cc with no problems
On the 250r you can play up or down 5-10 cc
Both are recommended by Honda to use ATF, which is about 7.5WT @ 100C and closer to 10WT when cooler.
I would use real 10WT fork oil, or switch to 15wt which helps firm them up, but more importantly gives you more rebound damping which most trikes can use.

I always just run ATF because thats what my honda service manual recommends.

that was because that was all that was available back then. actual fork oil did not come around till later in the early 90's. it has been proven many times over that synthetic fork oil not only outperforms ATF but causes so much less wear on parts as it was specifically designed for forks and how they operate as well as the materials in them and seals used.
if you are using aTF (in a pinch it will get you going) do your self a favor STOP. use synthetic fork oil. it will make a world of difference and help make your seals and parts last so much longer!
