You take the drain plug out of your fork and this is what you get...

I think I just did!!! Lol, this stuff smells like sewage. The first three squirts were all water followed by the chocolate sauce that Milner is talking about. I just thought it looked like a truck stop toilet bowl.

I didn't think they were still using fish oil anymore by the mid 80s but its possible I guess

I may have you beat. I've cleaned cleaned all of the fish tanks on a Russian trawler that washed up after hurricane rita. That was disgusting and made me quit fishing for five years.

If it's the original fluid it's ATF, and yes it smells wonderful! (Honda ATF was clear/green not red)
I like how it breaks down in "Layers"
Seal the bucket up for a week then open it up and swirl the bucket.
I love the smell of old fork fluid in the morning, it smells like-........ Victory!

For forks sake! You might want to add a bit more oil than you got out of them

The other fork had no water and the oil was grey with a greenish tint to it. It has to be the only time that they were drained. The washers on the drain plugs were the color of a new penny. Its always nice to see a part that has been untouched by age.

Keep in mind, many people including myself do not drain the fork oil from that hole, that's a old school thing and pretty much vanished in 1989 and up forks.
So, hopefully from a wear standpoint the oil was changed a few times.
Are the fork tubes a bluish color about 1" to 4" above the dust seals? (On the hard chrome)

I didn't see any bluing, they are slightly pitted by the triple mounts but everything else was smooth. They had the stock boots also.

Nice, fork boot save tubes!
I have seen tubes between the triple clamp fully rusted and clean under the boots.
You can clean up the rusty spots with CLR cleaner, soaked overnight then polish with 1000-1500 grit wet & dry sandpaper sprayed with soapy water.
Then dry them and hit them with clear coat gloss spray paint. (Not under the triple clamp pinch area, tape that off) Rustoleum works great.
Just fog the first coat like a primmer.
Polish in a cross hatch so they look uniform before you paint.

Yep when I rebuilt the 350x forks it looked just like that and had only a small amount of fluid. Not nearly the 9.8oz I expected.

yeah when i rebuilt mine it was the same story. If you're rebuilding them do yourself a favor and go with Honda seals and dust caps. You'll be glad you did.

I've seen some similar stuff from being a mechanic. It is such a rank, nasty, putrid odor! I got lucky when I drained the 250R forks that I put on my 350X. Decent fluid in them. I filled with Dex/Merc ATF with new Honda fork seals.

Yea the stuff that came out of 200x shocks was nasty. and the stuff that came out of my rear shock looked like alien blood. Both had a putrid smell.

Your prepping your frame for your next build and when you pull off the triple, no balls fall out of the races. Must be the new "No Balls" bearings.
