hi ive been riding my alt 125 alot lately, its a good little trike, handles like a dead animal but thats anothe story..
problem is ive replaced both jets, cleaned carb to immaculate standards, even carb soaked it it still has a bog off idle...
i replaced the stock #20 pilot w a #18 and have put the airscrew in every position possible to no avail, it still bogs off idle
runs excellent other than this so ive delt w it..
yes the compression is excellent, burns no oil at all either, new airfilter, air box not modified, exhaust either
any help is always appreciated

i have absolutely no idea if that is normal for those or not but if you haven't ridden many two strokes then i can tell you that this is a common trait with many, especially if someone got in there and ported the cylinder . . the very first thing to do irregardless is a compression test with a high quality gauge . . if it is less than around 140 psi then you will definitely get more power everywhere by increasing the compression but you will have to tun premium gas at that point.
a photo of the end of the plug might help also.
if the ignition timing is less than spec it will also cause this type of prob so i would check that also.

2 options. Try another carb, most likely yours is rotten way up inside a orifice no man can get too. Or keep jetting. These 30+ year old carbs have had a lot of opportunity to develop problems. Try a 14 and a 22 or 24. Adjust the screw till it's happy{ Idling at it's highest}, Then adjust idle and see where you get. I would also try the main jet up and down a couple according to your plug reads. If you can't make that one work. get another. As you already know, these are a strong little bike.

its a 4 stroke, i read in a magazine they have great low end (dirtwheels 1985) but this one doesnt, for now ill just deal w it unless someone has a cheap used carb that works correctly, its just a play bike, its no honda!!

Try shutting the petcock off and continue to ride until it sputters. As the bowl empties, it will get leaner. If the problem gets better, you're jetted too rich. If the problem gets worse, you're too lean. It sounds lean to me, but guessing from 3000 miles away is tough.

i told ya i didn't know crap about them and see...i was right, lol, however, the exact same compression and timing rules apply.

"bogs off idle"
Try lowering the needle.

might want to pull off the vent tube for the float chamber, i was having issues with an lt160 and a blocked or pinched tube was the cause......

.
so you are not going to do a compression test, check the timing or try bigger pilot jets or different main jets as was suggested?
moving the needle will not correct a big bog . . it ids for fine tuning
if it burbles then goes, it is rich . . if it just feels like it runs out of gas then goes, it is lean.
if it is lean then installing a smaller pilot jet like you did made it even leaner.
only a 1 jet size change will do basically nothing for a big bog

i havent had time to mess with it, but will this wknd for sure. im not throwing a 10$ carb on it, thats why i asked if someone had a good used one for sale... it felt rich off idle, bogs, so i tried leaner, didnt help much but no worse, ill try going up on it too, compression is great on this trike! i dont have a comp guage anymore but it feels very strong on the pull cord. im going to try the shut gas off and ride see if it gets better trick, not sure why i didnt think of that to begin with!!217609
