brake cam wont return by itself.. is that because the cable or just the return spring being weak??? any expertise or whereabouts for parts would help and be greatly appreciated

The return spring helps with the return, but the internal springs between the two shoes are much stronger. For sticking brakes, it could be a rusted/damages cable but you need to also check for rust and spring condition in the drum. If you have never changed the shoes, it's also possible they are separating and binding.

Your brake cam is corroded inside, you have to pull the brakes out. The cam, which has the arm for your cables splined onto it, Must be gently pounded back through, cleaned, shined, and greased, then it will work like new. Be aware of the timing marks of the cable arm and cam before you tear it apart. Line them back up when you're done.Lube/change your cables and pivot points, and you'll have just like new brakes for years now.

thanks. gonna clean up the cam. guess it would help if i had the real brake shoe springs in the first place too. new cable i can get from royal distributing. but i got the shoes from there and they dont sell any that come with springs. next time il get them off the internet... ill have to find a new return spring tho.. seen one for $24 on ebay.. still took the 250sx out for a little rip on the trail. ran good. nice power. comfy new seat and reverse were a pleasure :) but shes an old girl she still needs a new front tire before that blows and i havnt gotten to the bottom of my electrical problem.. no power at the switch.. fires when u jump the solenoid tho

there are two springs that hold the shoes onto the backing plate, item number 7 . . are you saying you do not have these?
you also need springs number 27 if your setup is like this.
