With or without airbox lid 86R

When i bought my R it didnt have a lid on the airbox. I remember seeing a post where someone took theirs off because they thought it was an improvement. Anyways, do i need one? I wouldnt mind saving the money on one if i didnt need it

i always took the airbox lid off my 250Rs, if you ride in the wet cutting the rear 1/3 off the lid works well also

Unless you ride in really wet stuff, you don't need it.

Yes it runs much better without lid but must be jetted accordingly! My opinion stay away from K&N filters and look up EHS Racing air box lids but you will have to buy a lid in order to do this mod. Go with a foam filter setup but just be aware dust, water, sand gets into everything so try to prevent as mush as you can to minimize debris from getting into airbox.

heres the deal

you will NOT notice a BIG difference in power without it, especially if the bike is stock . . it will definitely sound louder which some people confuse with a big power increase but that is not the case.

your air filter will get dirty FASTER without it.

you could get water in there when you wash your bike.

i would guess that you could buy one fairly cheap on ebay.

if you use the lid but want more air to get in the box, you can simply drill a couple holes in it with a hole saw and them glue some foam over the holes on the inside of the box to reduce the amount of dirt that gets in there . . if you put just put two 1 inch holes in it, it will DOUBLE the existing area which is way more than enough for most any app . . also, put the holes in the rear of the box as john suggested, this will reduce the chance of getting water on your air filter.

one thing to keep in mind, another problem may be the fact that it looks like they reduced the area of the intake boot by flattening one side and putting that very nice looking half round indentation in it, so i might be equally worried about that . . even if the intake boot area is the same as the carb, forcing the air to make a sharp, nearly 90 degree bend reduces velocity AND cfm, because the air comes in the tube, then rams into that half curve indentation which causes it to deflect into the air stream that is not directly affected by the half curve indentation.

The EHS Racing airbox lids have been discontinued for the 250r.

IMO, there is nothing wrong with a K&N filter as long as the owner maintains it.
They absolutely have to be oiled correctly.
For 6 or 7 rides per year, I clean & oil mine once a year along with cleaning the precharger. I have Never found dust in the intake tube.
