Few pictures to share from the event. With my new suspension I had no issue keeping up with side-by-sides in the deep whoop sections. Lots of stairs, questions, and lots of high-fives from the older crowd .

Happy to hear this. Can you elaborate with a before and after ride report. I ordered a Metal Tech +3 for my Tri-Z on Wednesday. Tyler said it should be in the mail next Wednesday.

Well done pcs. I suspect with that many Polaris machines in one area, at least a few were still working after riding. The dealers would make some good money selling parts;-) Sorry, not a fan of Polaris, my $.02

Glamy:The only reason the tire gummed up was because the dirt roads around the event were being sprayed with water throughout the event to keep dust levels down. Normally the desert is dry and I do not have to contend with wet dirt. So under normal use my front tire was fine . Running the 25" over the 23" front help with floatation over soft sand and rolling over whoop sections easier.
Neverlift: my previous set up was mostly stock. I used a stock shock with a Honda 250 R TRX rear spring And just recharged the shock and change oil in it . New set up as a metal tech +2 swingarm with a banshee suspension link and d New set up as a metal tech +2 swingarm with a banshee suspension link and a elka stg 3 raptor 660 rear shock. So it's not much of a comparison between the old burst the new when considering suspension action . With the added swing arm length the turning radius has increased so you won't be able to make as tight of a turn. What type of riding will you be doing?
Coolpool: Polaris was giving out free tech-support and maintenance work free of charge. They have to make sure their customer stay happy . I am also not a fan of Polaris.

Neverlift: I could get more specific with details but I don't know if you're familiar with the area so I can use it as a reference. The biggest change is in the suspension action the way the new rear shock handles. Its beyond what the stock one can do but it's expected when I'm comparing a new shock to a 30-year-old shock. What rear shock will you be running and what suspension link will you use. I do know from previous experience when you add a longer swingarm and you don't adjust the rear suspension it will feel it will feel softer with the Tri Z already being soft I don't know if that is a good thing.

are extended swingers a must have on sand like that?

I ask because I`m building an R specifically to take out West to attend some of the forum group events in 2017 and I have NEVER ridden dunes in all my life so I`m clueless in that respect.

Chop, 2017 eh, planning well ahead or being extra cautious on how long the build is going to take you?

Re the long swingarm, it depends on a few factors. How much horse power your planning on having, how often you think you'll get to the dunes, and what your riding.

I've got an 85r that goes quite well, and that's got a standard length swing arm and that works fine in the dunes.

Until recently I had an 87 tecate and alway thought that would benefit from a slightly longer swingarm to keep the front end under-control at times, but it never stopped me having a blast in the dunes on it. Plus it always looked cool popping the front end up as it hit the meat of the powerband in the middle of a diagonal hill climb. I always meant it and it never once scared the chit out of me..... of course..........

Unless your going to the dunes specifically to compete in some manner, I wouldn't bother getting too crazy with mods. For your first time I wouldn't even fit an extended swing arm nor recommend paddles. Just head up with a healthy 250 two stroke with good knobby tyres and get a feel of it. Any good running two stroke sport trike will always hold its own in the sand it is, after all, their natural habitat.

pcs: Majority of my riding is wide sandy trails, high speed and wooped out. I will be running a banshee Works quad cross rear shock (which i will have valved and sprung for the changes) and 01 CR125 inverts. I planed on using the stock Z linkage. What is the difference between the banshee and Z linkage? If the banshee linkage has benefit's then i'll buy one.

That's exactly what I needed to know, OZQUAD44. Thanks.

Yeah, I need time to get it all together. I`m rebuilding the truck motor in my toy hauler, my trailer needs a new floor and some tires, and my 86R is basically a rolling chassis at this point with the shocks and tank soon to be removed and sent off for some Magic Touches from a couple friends here.

I`ve ridden R`s quite a few times over decades and wrenched on numerous two strokes but have never built or owned an ATC 250R. This will be my first and I want to keep it near stock with maybe a pipe change and the required jetting changes and some suspension updates (internal updates to stock equipment). Nothing radical. I weigh 225 lbs right now. I was hoping it was more than enough to power me around the dunes in near stock form. It`s not like I`ll be driving 2000 miles several times a year to Glamis. The goal is ONCE in my life right now but that could become an annual thing if I like it. The machine has to be able to be easily repurposed for my local trails (hills, trees, and dirt).

I will probably skip TF this year so I can put that money and effort into my trip West in early `17

Its a bucket list thing I have to do.......Glamis or die....If I can hit that and the CALVMX stuff, that would be awesome

Chop, sounds like you've got it all planned out. I love the glamis or die, bit. Although I'd be glamis or bust myself, it doesn't sound so horrific....[emoji12]

Just make sure you've got a strong runner and you'll have a blast. Riding in dunes is an awesome experience.

One tip if I may. Get a good feel for the place before you get too OTT. It's hard to explain but most dunes I've ridden at have a comfortable pace that works. Going flat out every where all the time, which is tempting, can bite.

Don`t give me that 2017 sh!t .......you might not live that long (me either) you`ll be on your way this March mister ! So this IS the holy grail of riding experience .......you will find out quickly that this IS the reason the ATC 250R was created ! I`ve been doing it a long time over 30 yrs and guess what ? .......i did`nt fackin get tired of it ! .......i`m tired of my old lady but i`m not tired of riding them dunes !!!! Now do you understand the importance of your trip ?? NO you don`t need paddles or a longer swingarm ......you need to fly in and do it and you`ll never be the same .......you ever surfed ?

Surfed? hahaha yeah.......if you call paddling out off the shore of Cocoa Beach Fla. and then trying to ride a wicked 3 foot breaker on a waxed-up coffee table for a whole week, then Yes, I have "surfed".....like a douche. I suck at skating too (boards).

I plan on showing up at your house, Glamy. I`ll bring some of Kentucky`s Finest with me ;)

we can complain about the @#$% government and the collapse of society, and our passion for bang stix while you show me how to ride some dunes

I`m not the only Kentuckian interested. I was talking to Eric250R at TF and he mentioned wanting to head out west to ride dunes soon too but he also mentioned maybe having to skip TF one year to do it. I suggested we carpool lol. I only get two weeks a year vacation for now and one week I dedicate to my wife who puts up with me and the other week I get to do whatever Man stuff I want without a peep from her.

Ironchop,
I have done the Gordons Well ride three times now. The first two times I did it was on a BONE STOCK 250R. It did just fine.
Last trip I added a pipe, carb and reeds and it was even better.
From an east coaster's perspective, don't be concerned about performance mods just yet.
Your main concern is RELIABILITY. All you need is a machine that will start up every time you kick over the lever.
You want to be riding out there, not wrenching, so go over every single nut and bolt.

With that said, your front suspension will get a work out, so make sure your forks are good.
Our trikes basically go straight from Icefest to the dunes, and we don't even change jets.
I am planning on the spring 2017 trip out there too.

ironchop
11-11-2015, 01:14 PM
Thanks Keister.....those were the only mods I even considered.

Reliability is my first rule for this build.

as for my suspension, it all gets rebuilt very soon. Milner (onformula) will be getting the forks and rear shock here in the next couple weeks for some Milner-izing. He worked wonders with my 200X shock. I`ll give this R the usual Ironchop treatment with all new seals, bearings, and rebuilt mill. This one is a much better investment than the 200X so I don`t mind a total rebuild

In my opinion any 250 two-stroke trike has enough power to play on the dunes, extremely powerful motors are not necessary. When it comes to paddles they are not required but can definitely make a Dune trip more enjoyable if you're out an area with tall dunes like at imperial. I've duned my 200 X with knobby tires and it was difficult versus having paddles. When riding with knobby tires you have to pick and choose your lines more carefully and it makes it difficult to stop on certain Hills because you might not be able to climb out without some speed first

When it comes to set ups to riding in the sand dunes The advice I give it's based on the individual. some of the questions I ask include what type of riding do you plan on doing such as riding bowls and/or dragracing. Next question I ask is what machine you will ride and what is done to it. those questions are important when determining what type of paddle and whether you should run an extended swingarm.

In my experience and riding the various areas of Glamis since 1978, I have never had a issue if you follow the rules you are golden, many of the rangers are very cool and some ride themselves.

The most trouble I got into is when we stayed 2 extra days at Gecko after a big weekend (Thanksgiving maybe) and collected all the leftover wood and wood pallets and had a HUGE bomb fire with the center piece a cracked magnesium VW block. The fire was so big someone called the Brawley, CA fire department and they came out to put out the fire, after they calmed down they hung out with us, (Brawley, CA is 30 miles away)

So how tall are these tallest dunes? 150 feet? Are there places that if you went in the bowl you might not get back out? Seems like you would get in a bowl and lose all sense of direction, start drinking gas, mirages would appear and the buzzards would be circling all while getting the best sunburn of your life. Dune riding sounds great though, to a simple flatlander.

Olds is about 400 feet depending on your tape measure, it used to be taller and steeper back in the old days, unfortunately.

Glamis rules.

http://www.off-road.com/atv/feature/glamis-rules-and-regulations-by-the-bureau-of-land-management-12510.html

1. Must wear a helmet

2. Must have an 8 foot mast with a small red or orange flag on top.

3. California residents must have an off highway permit so bring your out of state d along with you when you ride or buy a permit.

4. As mentioned, headlight and tailight are required for riding at dusk and night.

5. Must have spark arrestor with the US Forrestry approved number on it.

6. You can not land or take off in aircraft within 1 mile of Gecko road.

barnett468

You also can not take off or land with your "TECATE...The Most Powerful 3 Wheeler In the World" within 1 mile of Gecko Road.

I have never seen anyone get introuble for no spark arrestor. Non of my machines have one. On big weekends, law enforcment will walk around and check machines for plates or dune passes. From experience i would not sit on your atv with the engine running without a helmet. Also if u plan on riding aggressively take an extra flag. for the most part i see people pulled over for no lights at night, no flag, dui, and no plates or dune sticker on machine. That is only on big weekends. On random weekends no problems.

So...only Cali riders machines are required to be registered right? A title for an ATV older than five years in the Midwest is a rarity. Those things get lost. Good thing we aren't required to be registered to ride public lands here or most of us would be screwed for lack of title.

So as long as my untitled Kentucky wheeler isnt stolen, I can still get a dune pass online or from a gas station around Glamis without trouble?

Ok, the quote below is direct from the wonderful California Department Of Motor Vehicles and it specifically means that you do not need to buy an OHV permit if you have an out of state drivers license in your possession with your picture and name on it if they stop you for no registration . . This means that you can not leave it at the car and get stopped a mile away from your car and tell them it is in your car . . It also does not state that you need any type of ownership papers for your vehicle which means that if they run the VIN and it is not stolen you are fine.

California is desperate for money and vehicle registration is a major source of income for them, so just because someone might have been let off the hook out there before for no sticker doesn't mean they will be again . . I would prefer to avoid the potential hassle and just get the sticker if I were a California resident or even an out of state one.

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/?1dmy&urile=wcm:path:/dmv_content_en/dmv/pubs/brochures/howto/htvr19

"OHV ID Exemptions

Vehicles exempt from OHV ID (registration) include, but are not limited to, special mobile/construction equipment, forklift trucks, golf carts, self-propelled wheelchairs, certain racing motorcycles (see the following), motorized bicycles (mopeds), and vehicles owned or operated by an out-of-state resident with a valid driver license issued by another state or foreign jurisdiction. (See CVC §38010 for all OHV ID exemptions.)"
