Any suggestions for gear ratios in the dunes?
I would be running 20" tires.

Bonus points for listing the stock gear ratio.

Try the stock gearing first.

Stock 13/42 520 chain 94 links.

But, it is always good the have a 12 and a 14 tooth in the toolbox. (Cheaper than changing the rear sprocket)

Many people have different riding styles, so experiment and find your favorite.

^^^^ good info.

Which dunes are you setting up for?

what type of tires and for just dun riding or drags
Also imo dont use a 12t front, tight radius turns wear chain out faster and will cause chain to drag in chain slider eating it up

The stock gearing works xlnt on a stock bike in the dunes . . We tested in soft sand for around 100 hours and tested a brand spankin new ATC250R rght along with it the entire tme . . The test also included going up a steep hill until the bikes would stop.

Since your bike no longer has the power robbing spark arrestor muffler, it will have even more upper end power and more peak rpm, and since it will go around 65 mph, I wouldn't worry about bringing numerically lower gearing but it wouldn't hurt, however, I would bring a 1 tooth smaller counter sprocket or 3 tooth bigger rear one along with a piece of chain and master links.

As pcs mentioned, the smaller sprocket might cause a bit faster wear on the guides, but you can check this for yourself by putting the bike on a stand then check the angle of the chain after it leaves the swing arm, then install the 12 tooth sprocket and look at the same thing . . Keep in mind that there will be weight on the bike most of the time which will eliminate the added pressure of the chain on the guide until the suspension nearly tops out or bottoms.

If it was me, I would start with a 44 or 45 rear and 13 front, but that is a bit of a pita to change rears . . Simply swapping the countershaft sprocket is obviously way easier.

If you won't be revving the bejesus out of it, the 12 tooth or 45 tooth would be my choices.

GEAR RATIOS

13-42 = 3.23
13-44 = 3.38
13-45 = 3.46
12-42 = 3.50

To confirm 13/42 is stock?
I thought stock was 13/37

You are absolutely correct . . I incorrectly assumed the gears posted by another was correct . . I won't be doing that again !%@#@!&

Do you think if I run a 13/35 with 20" tires I would be ok?

JETTING

If your bike was jetted for the stock silencer and if you will be riding within around 700 feet of your current elevation, I would go up 2 sizes on the main jet and raise the needle one position and check the plug after a short run . . Deep sand easily kills 2 stroke engines if they are lean.

Also, if you oil/gas mix isn't already a little rich, I would consider mixing it 10 to 20% richer . . This won't have a big affect on jetting.

I don't know what your goal is but the stock rear tires were 20's, so going with a smaller rear will make it bog even easier in the sand, especially if you have aggressive rear tires, and although the Tecate IS "The Most Powerful 3 Wheeler In The Universe", as hard as it may be to believe, there are limits to its ability.

Basically, if you want to hill climb, I wouldn't use a smaller rear sprocket.

I like coming down one tooth on the front sprocket at the dunes cause it gets you into the power band a lot quicker ..and you`ll need it for tons of hill climbing ! Also you`ll be jetting for sea level @ Gordy Wells .

I like a bit lower gearing so you can start in second gear at Oldsmobile, Competition, The Wall, ETC, and the 100 yard drags on the big weekends.

I ran 14/35 with 20" sand sharks out there and had no issues. 13/35 probably would have been better for me but only because I don't have much experience riding out there.

Sorry for no input from me. I've never ridden in dunes, but one day in the near future I will. That being said I run 14,15/36 down here in Florida..

The reason I asked about what paddles you were running is because with low gearing and aggressive paddles such as haulers, your trike will just wheelie anytime you try to open the throttle aggressively.
