Well here is the story...

Sent my 85r shock out for a rebuild to hygear in NY. They let me know upon tearing it down that the chrome rod had pitting in it which you dont want to rebuild with. So they could have it re-chromed but that would cost around 180 plus the 130 to rebuild it!

So I found a salvage yard who had an R shock and they sent it to Hygear, only to find out that one had a little pitting as well..... awesome.

So now I am wondering whether I should buy another used one and risk the same outcome, bend over and pay to re-chrome or buy a new aftermarket one?

What are the suggestions guys?

.
rechroming will not remove the pits unless done properly . . to remove pits it needs to be stripped then brass plated then the brass needs to be sanded much like the primer on a car, and if there are still pits, it needs to be brass plated and sanded again etc so unless they are doing that, it is a waste of money because i could get that thing chrome plated for around $60.00.

the least expensive new shock i know of are from works performance and they are very good . . i used to be sponsored by them and ran their shocks on all my vintage race bikes.

i would also call racetec about the pitted shaft and see what they say . . they are an xlnt company that offer springs and valving upgrades for that shock and they only get $100.00 for labor to do them and they do them quickly . . the valve upgrade is similar to the design works performance uses.

here's everything racetec has for your bike.

as far as trying to get another used shock, i would look for ones from california and arizona if you go that route because they are likely to b the best.
