After many years of searching I bought a second owner, Willys 1952 M38 Canadian model w/winch with 30K original miles. Drove 1200 km round trip to get it yesterday; road trip! There were only 2000 built in Ontario, Canada and only 400 of them had winches. It's still 24V but the ignition has been converted to electronic and the front brakes upgraded to 11" with auto slack adjusters from a Wagoneer. This was a regular driver for parades and such; needed to be safer. It came with all manuals, a fording kit, antennae, a NOS gas fired heater in crate, period correct gas/water cans, lots of new/used parts and a Willys powered Gen set skid on trailer. The motor in the genny is supposed to be NOS too. I paid lots but the last appraisal was for 20K in 2007. It runs, drives and shifts nice with tight steering. I've got some plans but not for this year. Detail orientated if you get the drift.

That thing is Awesome!
Nice score, good job.
By detail orientated do you mean it will be converted to a trike?

Ha ha, not quite. Meaning I have some research to do. I'm researching maintenance records and history records from the Canadian government. I want to know it's full story, what unit had it, etc. Not sure if the olive drab is period correct (doubt it) and there's a few driveline oil leaks to address; which means the tub will come off and an overhaul done. Black out markers are missing too. Probably replaced by signal lights to make it legal? Can't leave it alone you know. My plan is to drive it when it's 100 yrs old, if I'm alive, lol.

I know. Lot of weight to haul that far! I may remove the genny skid and convert that aircraft maintenance trailer into something I can put my golf cart on.

Nice find Pete, I'm in the market for an old jeep like that. I'm sure you'll get it right.

Nice! There was one of them in a barn that belonged to an old widow we would cut hay for when I was about 14. The guy I was working for had been trying to get her to sell for years with no luck. I don't recall a winch, or a roof but it was in nice shape with no rust.
Glad to see yours found a good home,:beer

^^^Why bother moving to Canada? Mr. coolpool already owns ALL of the cool stuff up there. I wouldn't want to be coolpool when Willy finds out he has his jeep. JK.

Unless the oil leaks are bad, don't worry about them. I tried to stop them all on mine and it almost seems like they were meant to leak a bit. Alot of the seals are kinda a leather material and don't seem to be "dripless". That is a real good find. Keep it out of the sun. The oil cloth canvas degrades quickly in the sun. As for the color, they came in numerous different colors and shades depending where they were going. I had documentation on mine that put it in Okinowa Japan and the color was more of a brown than a green, just like the color of your gas can. If you look at things like the engine block, trans ,transfer and differentials there might be service tags riveted to them. They did this when they got serviced and you can trace the numbers back to where it was at the time of service. If you find some service tags on it make every attempt to avoid messing them up. It increases the value of the jeep. These old willys are like mountain goats. They don't go very fast (50-55 mph tops), they are uncomfortable as hell, ride extremely rough, don't handle for crap, but that's what makes them a blast to drive. I don't ever remember getting stuck in mine.

Do the windshield wipers still work ?. A lot of folks don't realize that they were non electric, vacuum operated off of manifold pressure so when you step on the gas some times they stop because of the vacuum drop.

Great find! Should be so fun. I like it. I will trade you my truck, the wife's car, a couple dirt bikes, a quad, lawnmower, 2 chainsaws and even the kitchen sink.

Yes they are supposed too work but the seller says the vaccuum tubing is clogged. Apparently the vaccuum is created by a dual action fuel pump taking vaccuum from the other side of the diaphragm, and yes they will stop when you don't want them too, lol. I'll get it fixed up in no time.

Thanks for the insight into those leaks and service tags! I'll keep them in mind. I'm going to go under it with some cleaner and start wiping everything down. See what's really going on under there. This will be in my garage at all times and will most likely have the top off when in parades or at car shows.

I could go on and on about how cool those are, but I'll refrain lol.
I know of someone with a CJ-2 and a CJ-5, mainly mountain beaters, but they are unbeatable. It's really cool to see one all done up like that. They look pretty dang neat with the windshields off/down and the top off.
Congratulations.

Overdue update! I been using this thing quite a bit going to carshows and doing parades with the legion and of course going for ice cream with the Mrs. My latest upgrade was to install a machine gun mount on it and fabbed up a fake gun (gotta love Canada) under the NOS cover. One day I'll pop for a de-activated 1919 or an airsoft replica, both of which are anywhere from $2500-3,000.00 here. Grrr!
The bad news is that I've developed an engine noise which I suspect is a wrist pin on #1 cylinder, looks like a rebuild is in order over the winter :-(

Love the Jeep
I am about a year away from getting one, I was just discussing w swmbo last week.
I started w the 1919 first!
Mine ran 2000 or so post semiauto conversion then about that again for the 7.62 to .22 conversion

I'm jealous of that 1919 plastik! Care to paddle across the Niagara River in a black rubber dinghy at night to deliver it, lol! I've switched my train of thought and might try to import a resin (ie plastic) .50 cal replica which are around $400.00 US. Again due to my country's pussy gun laws I'll have to import through a licensed dealer (if you can imagine) for an increase in costs I'm sure; for an effing toy!

Damn, even a toy is considered a firearm?
Kinda like the “zero tolerance” school policies here. A kid bites a pop tart int the shape of a pistol and is suspended. Trans fats are more deadly than a pop tart shaped gun. Dumbing down so those in charge don’t have to think

Wow, I didn't think the US had any dumb firearm laws? Here's the stupidity unveiled for Canada; I can own a de-activated (real one welded up) .50 cal but you can't make/own a replica without costly paperwork. Lucky I live out West and get away with the covered 1919 fake on the jeep. If I lived in Toronto..........!

And yeah we have a sh*t ton of dumb laws. On the flip side, the laws allow for legal people to build their own guns at home with no paperwork or serial numbers (but can't sell) contradict their policies on everything else so it evens out I guess?

Fiberglass, aluminum, or steel?
I sold my 78' FJ40 because of massive typical Hoosier road salt rust issues and then Texas Cruisers got ahold of those Toyota factory FJ dies and started repopping whole tubs merely 8 months after it left my house on a trailer bound for Missouri [emoji31]
