Hi everyone.

New to "romping". Just bought my first two trikes. On Valentines day I purchased a 1984 Honda 200es. I got a good deal, it has a bent axle. While looking for a axle in better condition....I came across a 200 dollar deal that gave me a ton on parts, a good axle and rear end for the 200, and a 1984 125m. The 125m isn't running...but hey; I don't mind the project!

So I went from 0 trikes, to 2 trikes in four days!

Happy to be apart of the forum. I'm sure I'll have lots of questions in the near future!

Welcome. Don't feel afraid to ask. We all have questions from time to time.

Nice finds, 200es is one of the most reliable machines out there for working, high/low range makes it able to do a lot more work than you thought a 200cc bike could. The 250es is great for suspension, but they dropped the low range in favor of a "super low" first gear.

ATC125m is the smallest machine with electric start, would be great for kids if you have any, if not, you could always be a big kid =). They had a common issue with how the sifting system works, but that doesn't directly relate to not running.

If you haven't already gotten the service manuals, there is an active link near the end of the thread that the link goes to.

Ohm meter and a little time should figure out if you have any electrical problems or not (coil, alternator, pulse generator main targets). Of course keep an eye out for the wire harness being cut up or rigged up in any way, and if so the problem is most likely right there. Wouldn't hurt to throw a battery in it and make sure it is detecting neutral (light should be on with key on). I don't think it allows you to start in gear even with pull start. I know the 200es does the same thing with reverse, and 250es/sx in any gear.

I have a couple 125m machines around, so if you can't find parts, i can ship them across the border, it just isn't cheap sadly.

Thanks for the tips. Interesting about the shifting issue on the 125. I'm having a hard time finding neutral with the battery hooked up. Maybe thats one of my issues. Can you go more in depth for me on this issue?

I do have young kids, thats why I grabbed this machine. Will look good cruising beside dad on the 200. Can't wait until they are both up and running good.

Here is a quick thread I found with photos (didn't read it though) http://www.3wheelerworld.com/showthread.php/155006-Another-Honda-ATC-125m-Transmission-Problem

That bolt was a bit short, and is easy to break the casing around it like the photos show. The other half of the problem is the ratchet system used on the shift drum, sometimes the teeth that grab the drum break or wear out. If that part is broken, when you try to shift it (by hand), you won't feel a spring tention at all, basically when you shift it, the shift drum just rolls back and forth w\o stopping at the correct spots. If the tooth is broken/worn on one side, the shifter will only shift up or down, and the other direction either won't work at all, or just barely work.

Really not sure why Honda wanted to put the shift drum up so high when basically all of their other models (atleast 200cc and 250cc) that are tried and tested had the shift drum down low and didn't have any major faults. 83-84 atc125m's should be the same design, I'm not sure what else out there used the same base design.

It is also very possible the neutral light is out. I don't remember which direction the 125m's are, but neutral is all the way down or all the way up. Only the machines with hand clutch levers had the between first and second neutral spot.

By your description, you have pretty young kids, not trying to push you to another machine, but they look good on atc70s and atc90s too =). Just someone has to start it for them, which could be a good safety measure so they are not riding when no one is around if you leave the key in the machine like basically everyone I know including myself.

The 125 was set aside today while I worked on the 200. I got the axle out, and to the mechanic press and bent her back straight. Almost perfect. I can't wait to throw it back together in a couple days and go for a rip.
