View Full Version : I Finally Found Some OEM Rear Plastic (3rd Gen R)

I've been trying to find some OEM rear plastic to replace the Maiers on my 85R for quite a while now. I'm seriously considering doing a semi-OEM refresh on it and having the correct rear plastic would be a HUGE bonus. The Maiers look good, but I'm beginning to see signs of "OEMoholic" in myself...can that be cured?

I saw these in a Houston CL posting about 3 weeks ago and finally found time to meet the guy (he helped a ton by driving an hour each way) for a buy. Admittedly, it's a dam long drive for a piece of plastic...but I thought it was worth it.

After a soapy bath and a few minutes under an orbital and wool pad, here are my new (to me) rear fenders. They shined up really well and only show some minor scuffs and very light scratches...they don't appear to have much use on them at all. The only real blemish that I see is some underside melting from the exhaust. One spot in the kicker well actually melted through to the top...oh well.

Not bad for $150 and 20 gallons of gas. Right?

Great deal for $150, cheaper than Maier!

I just don't get when some guys on here drop crazy numbers on OEM stuff for a machine that is a rider!?!?!

Yep, but see...there's the rub. I think I got a great deal on them, but I think that I may be too afraid to ever actually use them! Ha! How's that for irony?

BTW...does anyone know if these came from Honda with the decals affixed or not? I don't see ANY evidence of any decals ever being on these. They have the embossed warning label on the back and just a raised rectangle on the top of left fender for the Tire Pressure label. From what I have read, that makes these 85 OEM Replacements made before the 86 fenders came out. As the 86 plastic has embossed Warning and Tire Pressure labels...correct?

Those are the later production run replacement fenders for both years, embossed warning label behind seat and a decal next to the left number plate. The replacement 85's and oem 86's had two raised warning labels embossed. One behind the seat and one just to the right of the left number plate. The original 85's had no embossed warnings kinda like Maier fender. In the second pic you can see the outline of the warning decal next to the left number plate.

Great score BTW

Thanks for the insight on this. I guess I fit into the "Close...but no cigar" category. Do either of ya'll know if a set like mine would have come with the decals already affixed? Or did Honda leave that up to the customer/dealer to order the correct colored "ATC 250R" decal on the back (85 vs 86)?
Thanks again.

When I bought my trike all the decals and number plates were missing.

Try to find Bruce "Blue27" or something. He is in the group so you know he makes great decals.

I have had some issues with these fly by night guys on EBAY. Some are great though.....

I may take a look at Bruce's stuff...I've heard great things. I bought a complete 85R decal set from Jeff (pantera) and was very impressed. His stuff is really good.

I have spent the last couple of days trying to get the axle out of this thing to change the carrier bearings and having very little success. Same goes for the pivot bolt too... I got a new frame from bkm a while back to replace this one as its tweaked pretty bad. Now may be the time to swap all of the parts over to the new frame and start over.
