Im still looking for a 200x, passed the opportunity to get an 86 for under 750. :x i regret it. Im thinking of an 85, or 86? also, about the xr200 mods, the carb is 28mm right? or 26? what is the stock size of the x in both years? also, will the cam and from the 200 fit on the 86x? if so, how much power gain should i see or expect?

I believe the carb sizes are 24mm for 200x ('85) and 26mm for the XR.

im probably not getting what your saying clearly, but the 83-85 200x cams wont go in the 86-87, neither will the 81-83 xr 200's because the 86-87 200x's had 4 valves i believe....I dont know if there was a xr with 4 valves or not, i would imagine so. the xr200 motors in dirtbikes nowadays have 4 valves though!

The 86 are 2 valved....
As for what your asking are you, looking for a 200x and then beef it up? If so then I would suggest money ahead with a 350x.
But if your persistant the 83-85 would be easier to mod up due the avialabilty in aftermarket parts then that of the 86-87.

nope, dont want a 350x, ridden one, and dont want one. Too big for me at 5 foot 4. I can ride it, but dont feel as comfortable riding on all types of terrain with it.

My apologies I didnt even think about the beasty being a beasty, I know the exact thing you are saying. I ended up going with a 250r for dunes and have my 200x for woods. I am 5 ft tall can ride the beast but cannot control it.

Yeah, the 199cc 200X motor was a two valve head - but they were considerably larger than the older 192cc mills valves. I've heard of older XR200 heads mounting on to the 192cc motors - but - I've never heard of the same mods done to the 199cc X motor.
