there are alot of sled trails in my area and i went sleding with a friends last night and they are groomed very well and are very hard packed and i thought it would be nice to be able to take my tri z on them. but i was told that if i did and met up with a sledder that they would snap on me. my trike is still getting put back together but soon i may be able to take it out but i dont want to get my ass kicked by sledders. do three wheelers dig up a groomed trail that bad? i have know way of telling becaus ei havent been able to take mine out and see.

you need to check with the DNR,

I think that most snowmoblie trails are not for atv's. unless posted. here in michigan all the trails are posted with little signs saying what is, or isnot allowed on a trail.

Free country?? My ARSE! Around here you ride on your own land or get EP tickets. Power lines, railroads - nope can't ride there either.

I once asked if I could ride the New Hampshire snowmobile trails in the springtime as no sleds would be out there and I was told I'd get shot.

If I had acreage I'd be the first guy to invite everyone down to enjoy the land but for now I'm still broke!

"no wheeled vehicles" is the rule around here... So I guess that means NO.

Yeah Brian, they really frown on you ridin the sled trails up in this area. A lot of the trails are both atv and sled trails but during winter it is a common courtousey to stay off of them. And yes they will rip you a new a-hole if your caught on them. By the way I went to camp last night. Should have let you know but I was in sucj a hurry I forgot to send you an invite. Sorry bought that. Maybe next time.

In my area we get pissed about atv's on the sled trails. Don't get me wrong I love atv's as much as the rest of you but we pay good money to our local snowmobile clubs to groom the trails and to see guys on atvs tearing them up is not cool.

Same deal here. The sledders don't like the ruts caused when many ATVs use their trails. So bikes are banned, but only from Dec. 15 - April 15. And they don't mind us on their trails when there's not enough snow for the sleds. As well, their insurance company is threatening to withdraw their policy if they allow bikes on sled trails. The problem, according to the insurers, is having sleds doing 100 kph+ on the same trails with bikes doing 30 kph. It's a recipe for disaster, they say.

...thats not entirely true...those sleds tear up the snow just as much as the trikes/quads can

No they dont. ATV's dig bug ruts with their narrow tires, where as a snowmobile floats over the snow. Nothing worse than to have one of your ski's hit the rut and throw you off at 60mph. Its almost happened to me before. Not to mention the bigger ruts they make while spinning going up a hill...

makes sence no quads are aloud on the trails, thats how it is up here but i got my sleds so i am good, but what about a quad with traxs on it, or a trike with tracks and then a ski in front would that be aloud?

If everyone just coasted along on their bikes there'd be "rutting" problem, but there's no fun in that. Everyone, me included, loves to fishtail along and throw up some snow.
I too have been whipping along on a sled and gotten a ski in an ATV rut. Damn near wrecked. And smooth trails are better'n bumpy trails when sledding, naturally.
I've also had an incident where I came flying around a corner only to find a kid spinning donuts in the middle of the snowmobile trail.
I don't own sleds anymore, just my trike, and I'd love to be allowed on those snowmobile trails. But hey, I'll let them have their trails for three months of the year, because then I can have them for the other nine! :-D
As well there's a big move to build ATV trails where I live and there's more and more trails built every month. The club I joined even has their own groomer, one of those big suckers like snowmobile clubs use.
So I don't need snowmobile trails any more, really. And yes, I know, I'm lucky to live somewhere with its own trail system for bikes and where most old woods roads allow atvs on 'em. No shortage of riding areas.
Sorry to go off the topic.

In New Brunswick Canada we share some of our trails with the Sleds.
Sure there are some trails that are just for sleds but a lot of the trails are shared. A trail pass cost $100 for the winter. The ATV group I belong to has its own groomer. A lot of people around here just ride in the winter because the trails are just like super highways, fast and fun.

If you are not a member and you want to go on a poker run, you pay $20 for the day instead of $10 which the members pay.

Me too.
But it's THEIR trails that THEY paid for. At least, around here they have to pay for their own trails, just like us trikers and quaders.
If they wanna wreck their own trails, more power to 'em. :-D
