So lately the kickstarter keeps slipping through the gears. I looked on ebay and have found the new gear for around $60. If i want to replace the gear will i have to split the case or can i just take off the side panel?

Just the side cover only.
I would recommend to inspect the ratcheting gears first before buying. There is a plastic spacer peice in there that should wear before gears do.

Mines actually got the same problem. Everyone once in a while it slips. I've taken it off and stared out it several times now. Do you know what part it is? Here's an image of the layout.

I was told by a member who I consider a guru's go to guy when it comes to Tecate/Yamaha Tri-Z that the number one problem with tecate Kickstart (or perhaps any kickstarter for that matter) is the person doing the kicking.
Not enough patience in making sure gears are engaged before committing to the down stroke.
Not condemning anybody,,, just passing info along. It solved my problem.
But, those plastic pieces do wear out,,,,

This is true with EVERY machine :). Just like tearing on a pullstarter before engaging it,and wondering why they break :)

Mines got a nasty habit of feeling like it engages. But soon as you put a little extra force into it... OUCH lol

It's much more likely to happen in the colder weather when the oil in the transmission is much thicker.
