So i have a 85 and with the bike sitting and not running the bike will shift through the gears. When I start it, it will shift into first but that is all it will shift into second every once in a while. But not really any ideas would be a great help. Disk and plates are new basket is pretty rough. And cable is brand new pro motion. Thanks again.

a 1985 what? When its idling in the garage, do you here any noises when pulling in the clutch lever and letting it out?

got pics of the basket fingers? If the basket fingers are grooved you can sometimes get by with a flat file, otherwise you will need to try and source an OEM NOS basket (good luck) or buy an aftermarket basket. It could also be that your shift forks are bent. Regardless its time to crack open the clutch side and start investigating.
