233887Hello, so i started this about a year ago, taking my time wanted to do it to last another 30 years. Anyway its a 86 honda 200x/trx200sx motor. I know this has been done before but what a great idea. Im almost done a couple small issues to deal with. Im aiming to be done before x-mas so i can get it out of back room. The 2010 camaro green 2-stage paint was wifes idea(im liking it, its different when sun hits it) yes its a china carb with stock jets ill try it for now. Also china rear master, may trow it away but it fit nicely. Every motor mount had some change to it,long process....I didnt weigh them but 200x and sx motor only felt a couple pounds different. This motors been gone through top to bottom- not crank though. Wife let me keep motor on kitchen counter for 3-weeks.. But she did claim this bike from begining. Electric start, reverse will be nice. Time for work but heres a couple pics(for now)233884233885233886

I do have a question for the two guys that built these. Did u ever get your rear brake pedal hooked up/working? All help is very appreciated...My factory airbox hose to carb is only off by 3/8 inch, ill prob try heating first. Battery im going to use smaller lithium battery i found a few that will fit in tool box and weighs around a pound or so.233888 chain alignment is dead on with 5/8ths spacers though thankyou for figuring that out...

I like the green idea, what color plastics?

White maier fenders/ white gas tank/ lime green graphics. Ive got new white shrouds so i could do 87 200x graphics id just do custom color graphics maybe lime green, black, silver. Or 86 style graphics with some nice tecate green scoops. Welcome to suggestions? Ive determined any red color on bike wont work. My son already pointed out red reverse button sticks out like a sore thumb just being sarcastic. Im thinking 85/86 250r white headlight shell. I have extra 86/87 200x headlight glass+frame i think it will fit one of those years. Does anyone know

Hello, More pics, one question i added 3/8 spacer to the inrake so air box will fit nicely that should be ok right? In the pics the little blue tape lines are where frame mounts were. I put oil in bike today. No leaks yay. Wanted to make sure oil pump was working. I rebuilt starter last week that wasnt too bad. Sprockets it has 13/42 for cruising trails im not ready to spend $80 for different one. Oh it is a. 83-250r rear axle followed info from here, fit is perfect one seal change though. I may try one of those new cheatah fronts, rear tire not sure yet.2339052339062339062339072339082339092339102339 11233912233913

Its viton rubber, wasnt cheap for 6x6" piece thanks for being positive though. I used same material to make rear shock cover thingy. 233914 Just so every body knows theres parts from probaby 30 different bikes from parted ones (auction site) maybe more

Really hot /humid here so im in garage working on rear brake pedal. What ive got is a honda rubicon 500? Ten $ on auction site rear arm. On paper this will work perfect, grip end piece and master cylinder end from 200x the arm is rubicon i should of taken pic of 200x arm first but belive me it looks nothing like what it needs. When done i should have 1-3/4 throw, for master. Ill try to weld it up this wk end to show result. 233953233954233955

Hello. so rear brake pedal done.... it wasnt as difficult as i thought( ive been putting it off for a while) i still need to paint but here it is mounted. One shot is pushed down. About 1/2 inch clearance around it. It will hit bottom peg shaft all way down but not when brakes are hooked up+bled. Have about 3-hours making it. Anyway have a great day.234013234014234015

Quick update,234044234044234045234047. Air box hooked up, 86/87 intake/ added 4mm spacer cut from damaged 86 intake but its only there so carb bowl will clear elec-starter. Still need to find my clamps there here somewhere...plenty of space for throttle cable. If anyone sees anything out of place or i should change feel free to tell me, thanks((hope im not boring anyone here))? By the way if anyone knows if dirtcrasher? Is or has airbox rings for these bikes still i'd take three, paypal or cash let me know, anytime no rush at all...

You may find year rear brake ped is too low once riding. Maybe its the photos but I like to keep them in line with the foot peg.

Thanks, it really was only way to run it, i had a very small area to work with. Its a short 1/4 inch lower than footpeg, hangs past frame about 1/2 inch when depressed. Im hoping when bled the lever wont(shouldnt) be below frame234291234292

my lever moves about 1/4" max after bleed brakes. i used a 300ex lever and warrior MC.

Ok thanks i should be ok then, i havent had fluid in brakes yet, but everytime i look at that china $8 rear master im thinking of tossing it....but it fit so nicely. Wifes got a warrior maybe i'll swap (ha)

Hello, i have a few more pics, i did replace china rear master with stock one234547. Three years ago i bought 86/87 200x nos glass, i did some investigating found it fits 86 250r. The inside frame is same for both models well here it is, fits very well.234548234549234550234551 have a great wk end... Fenders are on the way!!!

Gonna be a little picky here, but the neon fork boots really clash with the frame color and kill the mood. I'd use black.
Headlight looks great but you already knew that.

My plastics came this am, ive got a few pics. The seat has seen better days the cover is hard, crispy the foam seem ok underneath. I have to get shasta paint and more clear for tank, going to put decals under the clear. This morning i started looking for my extra kicker pads for rear fender(then realized i didnt need to put one on). It'll be a few wks for any more progress pics here. Part of the bike was in sunlight there is odd shadows. I pulled starter a few times boy its nice to hear a slight rumble come out exhaust...im still looking for a good shape rear skid plate234575234576234577 now ive got to choose a seat cover.

Hi guys im back with a picture update, tank is done (colorite-shasta white) with 2-part clear. After i put decals on sunday ill include one more pic. Luckily the tank was in good shape, no rust inside just a couple small dings on tank, gone now. Need warning label still.
Have a great wk-end...235123235124235125235126235127
I decided not to put clear over decals, i wasnt sure if it would have a reaction with vinyl, also i could change them down the road if wanted/needed too.

235390Good afternoon, i got home from work early so i put some time in on the bike. Well it was a great day!!!! I temporarily hooked up battery, turned key, pushed start, neutral light on, the motor started spinning!! Checked for spark (yes). Reached down pulled on reverse lever(not hooked up to bars yet) pushed gear lever down, reverse light turned on! This made my day.....ive been very nervous about wiring (big time) and have it all work out. Im Still working on battery box? I wish i knew how to weld aluminum, I have to find a welder now, yellow box in pic is what i need so it will hang where tool box was. (Ideas?) 235384235385235386
Thank you 3ww..
Im not sure why theres a pic way up top.
Well about a week after this post i decided to get battery box done myself, here is the start of it. Its going to hang toward inside of frame behind tailight. I will use inner side to hang voltage reg on, my only other spot was to drill air box for it but did not think it was a good idea. just had to order longer neg battery cable.(not needed)
235549235550 always wanted to try to weld alum anyway. The picture makes the box look bigger than it really is
(Ok i tried to weld alum- not going to happen by me.. I ended up bringing it to a good welder to get it done-pick it up in couple days)friday 14th(still waiting) its now saturday
Thing looks sweet!!!! Great job

Hi, 3ww people i've got one more group of pics before she goes down to garage this wk-end.
I picked up my new battery box, welder made different one (lighter duty) then my precut one.
Wiring all done execpt for a couple rubber covers, i put dialectric grease in all wire connections.
Routed neg cable to exhaust side behind brake res, i hung it to bottom seat post w/oem unused 200x front ground clamp.
V-regulator will be attached to batt box.
Im going to hold off with hanging the new tool box for now, bought this new one when they were still cheap.4-yrs ago?
I still have to find a headlight guard that'll work or bend up a used one.
I still have 3" of clearance between battery box and chain when bottomed out.
Lights seem to have power all the time (motor not running) switch will turn light on/off at any time is that normal?
The brake plumbing/cables etc i'll do in garage, very crappy lighting in this back room.
Anything i may have missed so far dont hesitate to let me know. Thanks.2359902359912359922359932359942359952359962 35997235998
And yes it will be ridden and get dirty.............
10/28 Still hasn't been moved outside yet, (rainy cold weather) today though i ordered o-rings+rubber seals for rear carrier. And e-brake arm. Should be here in a couple days.

Hi guys, been working on getting carb done. I bought a trx200sx carb a while ago for fitting, well come to find out it has a 18mm carb slide( stock is 20mm). Bought from wincycles egay,
So same seller i bought a 86/87 200x carb (slide is 20mm) recieved today. I installed oem jets in the 200x, and all orings china orings were hard junk.
I also needed to swap the carb bowls for clearance for starter. Carb w/silver slide is 200x thats being installed, it should be all set.(i hope)
At the same time(same seller) i bought 86/87 throttle cable (its a $14 dollar piece of junk) doesnt fit...so my search begins for oem cable.
I hope this all makes sence. So my question is would there be a difference in using a 18mm to 20mm slide? Would you notice power loss/gain?236619 236620 236621 236622
Just checked the actual bore through the 200x carb is almost 3mm bigger
I know most of china carbs are junk but im going to give it a shot so i guess we'll see.

Thanks,
Yes i would have liked a 250sx(it would have been cheaper) not many of those in this area in good shape..(i had alot of the 200x parts already) so this project started.
If its a good runner the next time around i think it will go back to red, but the green Will last through the kids teenage yrs.
Belive it or not the hardest part to find new was the white gear selector thing, took four months of watching egay.(pic)
I couldnt find a good e-brake arm either that didnt break the bank so a yfz450 arm new for $5 fits nicely.

Hey jmoozy, are u still riding yours? Great idea by the way...
The Exhaust is a supertrapp i bought a few years ago for a different bike(never put it on) the nice part about it is the stock heatshield mounted perfectly to bungs on supertrapp headpipe, so i put it on this one.
Stock 200x airbox, its just going to be a cruiser, i rarely get out of 3-4 gear on my trails.
I may have to go up one jet(114) because of exhaust, first startup should be next wk.
The 200x carb is being used--- 20mm slide is stock size and bore through carb matched oem carb on other bike i have, i used trx200sx carb bowl so it would clear the starter. I havent tried the oem slide in the china carb yet-(i may tonight)
Thank you for carb offer i may take u up on that ( i'll see how she runs first)
The supertrapp is for 86/87 200x it fits good but when motor got moved over its only about 1/2 inch from frame in one spot, i may put heat tape on back side (frame) it may be ok though

I do still ride it, but not near as much as I should. That's a sweet pipe and I bet it should run great with a good tuning. Just let me know and I'll be glad to help you out. I can bet that I have a 114 or 115 I could throw in there too. It should be good for it. Those little motor run great when uncorked. I think the stock main for the quad is like a #98. It's been a while but I think I'm running like a #122-#125. What pilot are you using?
Shep1970
11-07-2016, 11:19 PM
Im trying a 35 pilot, 112main(probably end up higher) no holes in airbox i suppose it will suck more air with the exhaust but
At this point i know my wife and teen age kids will be riding it. Soooo im going to "down tune" by removing or having proper amout of discs to run near or a little above stock for now. I know that may sound bad but (for now) thats what im aiming for.
((Of coarse that may and probably will change after i ride it)) im adding a pic/page from supertrapp only because i had it
236665
My (piston guy) i use checked for out of round, gave a light hone he said the bore is still in spec so the stock piston was used w/new oem rings so theres nothing special in there "not yet"
I bought a few jets last wk-end at the honda dealer, i asked him if they had carb jets in back he said yup what for? I Told him and he acted like he didnt really want to do business w/me. I got what i needed but what a butt hole.
Thanks again jmoozy (i'll pm you in a couple wks either way)
Husky thanks, im sooo close to it being done, i realized how much work it actually is....$ wise im at the point where do i spend
$25 on a walmart battery or $150 on lithium light weight one
Or the front brake master is like $25 for a china one "will prob work fine" or
$110 for nissin one (honda). Im so screwed, because if i look at something and it bothers me a little-a month later i'll change it. I dont have very deep pockets, im a self employed contractor so work comes and goes.

I've used the China brake stuff in the past with ok results. They are hard to bleed but do work when bled. Long term reliability can be an issue but it all depends on how much and to what limits it is pushed. If kids are riding it, missing may be worth the extra coin IMO.

Thanks steve, i think i could definetly use some help w/that, i will get it running first....
Got a couple pics-a new guard held close to where it goes its VERY close on top, the bottom will need some work though.
But yes could just make a new one or ive got a very slightly bent to the right(just the mounting portion) on another used one that could be experimented with. So screwing up the crome wouldnt matter.236685 236686 236687
Thanks again,
Shep
The bent guard i may just mount it and hit it w/a rubber mallet to bend it back? I'd take headlight off. Got to weld up small crackd welds too. Or just start from scratch
(Next day)
I think i may have got it figured out, well kinda. I added 1/2inch spacer on bottom, i'm going to heat up and bend lower about 10 degrees more which will bring top down and back more, Then it should be close enough i can just play w/the ange of attach points. I hate to bend this guard up but its already bent and chances are it would never be sold in my lifetime anyway.236724 236725 236726

I just machined a couple of aluminum spacers for my 86 back when I was experimenting.
You should be able to bend that without heating it using leverage. Just protect it, good vice and cover the chrome.....

The bad part is the cat actually caught it twice and just let it go after she showed us.
I couldnt use poison or any trap. I tried to catch it but that wasnt going to happen.

Yea it's that time of the year where they come into the houses. I thought I had a squirrel in the house the other week. Turned out to be a big rat. The cats didn't even bother lol.
My mom was sleeping on the couch and my little brother and sister came home and seen the dog laying on the couch with a big rat laying right between my moms legs. We still don't know how long she was sleeping with a dead rat lol. Probably thought it was one of her dogs. Wish I had the picture on my phone, my brother does.

Ya know how I split the rear swingarm carrier housing?
I put a penny in the 2 slots and snug up the 2 bolts from underneath where the threads are.
I just thought of it one day, lol....

FINALLY, someone sets powder coated parts on a towel or blanket!!
I can't stand when people put parts on their driveway!!

I'm telling ya i feel like a kid on christmas eve, the morning is not coming soon enough...
Bleed the brakes front/back
Install e-brake cable
Throw rear fender on (still has old cover)
Double check everything!
Gas up and "Go for a ride" (hopefully)
Ps- the frame is just an auto paint w/gun with a 2-coats clear. Yup too much work to just set it on the ground...

It runs !!!!!!!!
Put gas+battery in today, turned petcock on, opened carb drain to make sure gas was there.(yes)
Hit start button- motor made about 3 revolutions and it came to life..........
Exhaust sounds nice... Not to loud but there is more rumble to it than stock. The fender is only about 1" away from exhaust so i'll have to get some header tape for one area, its one thing i forgot to check. An auto parts place must have something.
I drove around in 1st- then i tried reverse, i wasn't sure on the adjustment yet but the light came on and off she went, it was a odd feeling but a good one!!!! The oneway bearing maybe? spins for an extra second or 2 when i shut it down, hope thats normal?
Sooo theres another runner from a butt load af parted ones.. 237304
I'll throw up a video if i can figure it out within the wk.(nevermind, when it gets a little warmer)
A night pic- 237306
Edit: about 3miles on the bike,
i had to raise the idle but carb seems perfect.. High beam isnt working, i've have to check why.
Very different w/no clutch!! But i like it..
Ordered a stick on (thermo tec) heat barrier for inside rear fender near exhaust so that issue should be solved...
I may have said before that i dont mind kickstarting, BUT this electric start is NICE.
-- ok high beam is working now that i pushed the light plug in. (Wish i checked it first)
Edit:
I put heat barrier on rear fender today its works like it should.
Also the carb has a VERY slowly increasing idle as bike warms up, i find myself turning idle down a touch as it warms.
So i need to adjust air/fuel screw, maybe increase pilot one size. I'll make sure my intake's not leaking air first though.
Exhaust is burning clean. Likes to start quick and motor sounds good mechanically.
Its been too COLD to mess w/it though.237775

Looks great, nice work. I reckon a green seat with white ATC, per the OEM seat design is the way to go.
Now that you have reverse, what your looking at there is what Honda may have actually served up as the 88 200x.

Ok- the bike runs, starts quick, no popping or (back firing at all). Took intake back off again replaced orings(one against the head was older. (All new) really can't be leaking air.
The bike is ever so slowly idling higher, not bad though i find myself turning idle down up to a 1/4 turn after a couple mins.
Chinese carb but everything internal is oem
Only thing i can think of is the cable cap theres not really a gasket, there is a paper thin gasket but? Would it pull air from it? To cause my issue? The choke does its job but will kill it when i choke it when warm(pretty normal)
I know, i know its a china carb.....just a couple maybe three miles on her. Heres a pic of the plug, its kinda charcoal color the flash brightened it some. Brand new plug the end of tang i touched w/my finger so its bare metal there. Not oiley(sp) at all more like a dry soot. 238260
I will get a video of it later today-
I put hex head screws on carb bowl (easier access) not much room there. 238261
Thanks for any help. I have turned air screw(not idle screw) 1/4 turn in it seemed better but shoul i go more?

I always start with 1-1/2 turns. It's usually spot on. I've had my idle creep up when fuel gets starved. Check your float level, should be parallel to the bottom cover when flipped upside down and will seal. Slowly rotate to make sure it opens. If that works, verify fuel filter or get rid of it till you sort this out and run a straight line. Also, verify your petcock flows fuel thoroughly, connect a line and watch it flow out when opening and closing the valve. Report back.

Ok got it!!! Thnx mpdano i put it back to 1-1/2 turns out or close to it, until throttle response was good.I took the tank off AGAIN.. Put some teflon tape around carb top/snugged it up. No more idle creep!!!!yay, wish i new that at 10 this am. I think the china carb doesn't like the oem cable top. I may have to get an oring for a final fix.
Here's a video, sorry not much im by myself so i couldnt have a ride and record it. Real muddy here also the grounds thawing out. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MYVUyBpqSwQ
That link should work.

(Edit)
I decided to add the fender brace, i just need to bend(form it) a little to mount to the maier fender. Maier included angle
Pieces w/the fender but i've decided to do it without them. So now i'm in search of small/ grommets, collars before any drilling..238630
(About a week later)
Its ALL done except the seat cover.....i've put about 6-8 hours ride time over the wk-end, runs great!!! I really like the
Elec-start, used reverse a handfull of times its nice to have. Its moves right along too, no problem gettin those wheels to
Spin!!! Dont get me wrong, i really like having a clutch in the other bikes but having this automatic Is great too.....
When i put up a good video of it in action i'll bring this thread back to 1st page, Thanks for looking!!!

Thanks, finally have good weather here, i hope to do some riding....gotta check my air filters for mice nests!!!! For
Some reason they like that spot. My cats getting lazy- already found one in the wifes warrior, what a mess, of course that was after she said it wasn't running right.
--edit--
I finally bought a seat cover it's kawi- green "the whole seat", i'll do white stencils that look like oem style. So hopefully in the next wk it'll be here!!!!! I bought myself an air powered stapler too!!! Should be allot easier than the old hand powered unit...242928 almost went with the white cover and green flames/maybe next time.

Thanks ol deuce... I really like how it rides, i'm still getting used to reverse. My only complaint so far is the
Trx gear change lever, think i'm going to throw a 200x end/tip on it, the trx has that large rubber end (hard to get used to i guess.
The kids call it the mtn dew bike, its funny they put a 2-liter on it, its got the same colors.
I'm more kind of a layed back quietish guy (unless theres drinks) all my clothing is neutral colors!!!
So yup it'll take some getting used too- wife drives it but not much.
Your bike came out great, really nice!!!!
On a different subject- i got to test ride a 350x a few wks ago first time..(my gotta have one list got longer!!)
who's next to put one of these together??????

Thanks, i'll try that.
I picked up a trx200D outer cover that deletes the pullstart assembly, but there would be no back up starting system.
But would let me just use a stock 200x shifter. hmmmm what to do?243264 243265 243266

Ps- i still need to build something to use up all these extra trx parts!!!!!
Recently picked up an oem carb/rebuilt it and its ready to be installed!!! I can get rid of that china carb, its been working fine but i dont trust it long term.

Shep, where did you get the rubber/plastic cover for the bottom of your tank? I don't even know what you call it, but I assume it protects the paint from rubbing on the rear fender? I am missing that on mine, so of course I need it :)

I believe there discontinued now,243764 these right? just keep watching ebay they show up now and then.
Thankfully i bought a bunch of parts a few years ago.
You could also use rubber grommets in the holes from ace hardware or somewhere. If there maier fenders just trim them back a little in front, the grommet will keep a space there.
My son's bike has grommets now, the picture is kinda dark and lots of dust but u can see them, i'm to cheap to give him the good stuff......243765 the rear fender is slid back so you can see.
Here's with the fender on it has about 1/8 inch space away from tank on all sides243766
