View Full Version : Gofundme: Just when I thought I'd seen it all

So, I'm sure most of you know about the web page "Gofundme". I have made a few small donations on that page for a handful of worthy causes. All in all, I'd say it is one of those things that was started with the "best of intentions". But boy, it sure seems to get abused! I've seen some doozy stories on FB about people putting up Gofundme pages for causes that are nowhere near worthy. But today I saw one that really irked me.
It was on a FB group that I won't name. I'm sure a few of you are on it... I will say it was deleted, but I'm not sure if it was removed by the OP or the admins. The jist of it was, 15yr old kid riding a "fire road" on his trike, no reg, no insurance. He hits a Chevy pickup and is on the hook for the cost of repair. Seriously?? For all I know this person is a member here, IDK. But what grinds my gears is that he states in his Gofundme request that he doesn't want to sell his trike to raise the money he needs to pay for this guys truck repairs, and he can't raise the kind of money needed. How did we get to a place where a person has the money to buy/fix/maintain/fuel a trike, but does not at least take out a basic liability insurance policy since he is riding off his own property, damages someone's vehicle, is found to be at fault, and has no issue asking for charity to pay for the damage he did????!!! Look, I think charities are a great thing, and people do wonderful things for their neighbors in need...in TRUE need. And many times, recipients of charity do not want, ask for, and in some cases try and refuse the help. I'm sorry, but making the choice not to carry a basic liability policy (and you CAN insure trikes through Progressive!) and then asking people for charitable donations to pay for your accident is unacceptable to me! I was expecting to see that the kid had a wreck, got hurt, and Mom and Dad couldn't pay the doctor bill... Nope, I was riding a fire road, hit a truck, am on the hook for the repair, don't want to sell my trike and don't want to get out there and bust my arse to raise the money, so I'm asking people for a hand-out... WTF is going on with people???!! Or is there something wrong with me???
What about Mom and Dad??!! This kid being a minor is THEIR responsibility! THEY let him ride off their property with no insurance. THEY should man up and make things right with the owner of that truck and then square things with the kid. In fact, I believe the law would dictate that the parents/guardians make this right by the truck owner being this young man is under 18.
Sorry for the long rant, and maybe not the best post I've made... But this has just been bugging me all day as I WORKED for my paycheck!
And if the kid who posted that Gofundme is reading this: Sell that feckin trike, get a part time job, borrow the money from Mom and Dad with an arrangement to work it off, come to an agreement with the guy whose truck you hit, ANYTHING! Just figure it out, get to work, and quit asking people to give up their hard-earned to pay for YOUR mistake and YOUR choice to go uninsured! YOU must accept and deal with the consequences of YOUR actions, YOU must make sacrifices to make right what YOU did... Not the rest of the world!

Couldn't agree more. He'd benefit more from the life lesson of working off the repairs than he would from a hand out.

It's panhandling, all of it.Believe it or not a gofundme account that one of my friends made for himself was a huge catalyst for my permanent departure from Facebook. I'm here working my ass off and literally missing meals, no drinking no partying no recreation at all, and this guy has the nerve to post a gofundme account asking for money to pay for a concert. I had some choice words for him.

I guess what is bugging me about this is that some people really have no issue with abusing their fellow man's charitable nature. It bugs me that the line between "want" and "need" has been so blurred that both are now considered one and the same by alot of people. I would bet that ALL of these people haven't the slightest clue as to what it means to have true NEEDS that are not being met.
I guess this is just another symptom of the society of instant gratification, and the house cards continues to be undermined not by the "have-nots" but by the "I-wants"......And none of them care as long as they get what they feel they having coming to them. The "Feel the Bern" types.

I agree 100% . tuck your tail between your legs, look life straight in the face and get on with it. This is the reason I dislike most people, just face up to what you have done, take responsibility for your actions and make it right. Plain and simple.

Perhaps if they were a bit more motivated, they would be asking for medium sized clothing instead of Extra Barge sized clothing. Man can not live on Twinkies alone...

Yeah, I'm no expert on the subject, but a women's 28 is pretty big isn't it?

Reminds me of the GoFundMe for the kid local to me that "couldnt" afford to pay for college, yet had no job of his own?, the title of which was "Put John Through College"
It's like they are too stupid to understand the fact that they are begging and looking pitiful. Both my sisters work full time jobs and go to school full time and best believe if they needed anything from me I'd do my best to help them. God knows i couldn't do that. They literally sleep, work, school, work, sleep. I'd give them money lonnnggg before i "Put John Through College"
Speaking of picked up by the fuzz...about the stupidest "crowdfund" idea I've ever seen was a facebook group with a joint bank account and everyone was supposed to put say 25 dollars a week in this account in case one of the members of the group went to jail the other members could use the money to bail them out.
The person that had the idea was a hopeless recidivist and constantly in and out of jail... imagine that. Needless to say that idea never took off.
Depends on what body part you are talking about.

At least I wasn't the only one thinking this. I seen it on Facebook but didn't waste my time clicking on the link but this just told me all I needed to know. I'd be too embarrassed to even post something like that.

Personal responsibility is not being taught to the younger generation and it is shameful! Not sure exactly how or why, but parents these days want to hand everything to their kids without them learning about "work = reward".
I find the entire thing humorous. He made the decision to ride. He made a mistake. He doesn't want to sell his trike to pay for his mistake. Typical Bernie supporter if you ask me. His parents need educated by the sounds of things.

Ghostv2: Yeah, I left a couple of comments on that post, trying my best to make a point while resisting the urge to go over the top. Pretty much every other person who commented lambasted the kid. I admin a couple of groups on FB and I don't think I would allow such a post to stand on one of my groups. Still unsure if the OP removed it himself or one of the admins of that group did.
DC: Yeah things like this make me wonder why Gofundme doesn't have some sort of approval or admin review process before an Gofundme fundraiser even gets posted on their page. I think that over all the site is a great idea, but I think they need to step up their game so as not to allow their idea to be abused in such ways. I know that if I were running a page like that, I would in no way want to be associated with to the point of enabling such nonsensical immaturity and abuse of peoples' charitable nature.

Funny thing is.......a lot of that stuff can be had on the freebies section on CL.
I haven't purchased firewood in 5 years. For a backyard flat screen, fire pits, etc. etc.. The only problem here is that you have to be in the truck with the engine running in park and ready to go as soon as something pops up or the illegals will beat you to it.
