Is there any way to check the timing on a 350x with out taking the motor apart? Something similar to the little window on a 200s window? If so where? And if not what is nessicary to check? Does the motor need to be pulled?
Thanks

Check the manual on how to check timing, specifically the part about lining up the cam sprocket when the motor is at TDC. That can be checked w/out pulling the motor. If that doesn't do it, probably have to pull.

You don't need to pull the engine. But you will need to remove the rocker box along with the timing and flywheel nut plugs from the stator cover..The timing plug needs to be removed to view the correct timing mark on the flywheel is lined up with the timing mark in the sight hole. With those two marks aligned, your timing marks on your cam should be parallel with the cylinder head/rocker box mating surface. You need to remove the big center plug on the stator cover to make turning the engine over to timing position easy with a socket and ratchet... Also, remove the sparkplug so you aren't turning the engine against the compression stroke..

I went down to shop and gave it a kick for shits and giggles.... it fired right up. any one have any idea what may have caused it to die and not start?

whats the story of what happened when it died?

loxboy- had been riding for a few hours, periodically stopping for ice cold refreshments :beer:beer , so I don't think it was super hot or anything. rolled down into a creek bed holding the clutch in, dropped the clutch to come back out of the creek bed and it made a metal on metal noise (my reasoning for thinking timing) and died. kicked that ole girl as long as my leg could take it with no luck. didn't have any binding while kicking or anything that seemed out of the ordinary

Hmm.... Metal on metal noise would worry me. Have you pulled the sparkplug and looked for an metal debris on the plug??

Possible she ingested some water in the creek.. water does not compress and I suspect could cause your engine to make some crazy noises as it drowned and shut down??

ride red- never a sound you want to hear. no i havent plugged the plug. and the creek was dry

Copy that... well I guess the dry creek bed eliminates water ingestion as a culprit... Strange to hear a noise like that, followed by the engine quitting and not wanting to re-fire only to have it fire up again with no issue days later.... Any strange noises now????

Just a shot in the dark: I wonder if something in your auto-decompression mechanism let go and just happened to coincide with crossing the creek bed?

ride- YES I KNOW!!! very weird, the thing that scares me is that noise I heard, I would suspect it wouldn't fix it self. now you may be onto something with the decomp.. I bought this x a few months ago and haven't gotten into it much yet. but I believe the little pin that holds the decomp mechanism in the head is missing. you can pull that whole little mechanism right out of the motor with the motor running!!! CRAZY! but I do know that if you put it in wrong it will make a metal to metal noise and die. although anytime I have accidently done that, it started right back up... I took her out for a quick run yesterday with no major issues. at this point im pretty stumped and not sure if I should continue riding it or pull the motor for a check up this motor did just recently start to smoke (stops once warm) could that be a factor anywhere?

Given that bit of info, I would be looking at your compression release mechanism... Something may have let go and got trapped somewhere holding a valve partially open, killing the engine... And by dumb luck when you kicked it over days later it may have dislodged itself allowing normal valve function consequently allowing the engine to run... More worrisome is the possibility that the piece may have been washed down into the base by the oil returning to the base from the upper valvetrain... But lets not go there yet... Lets find out for certain what actually happened and go from there....

It's kind of hard to explain in type how the compression release works, I would strongly urge you to download a service manual for the 350x. This will explain things alot better than I can on this subject. And of course it will come in very handy down the road.

I know there was an issue with some of the CDI boxes getting warm and stop working. As well as a stator having an issue like that. May want to do a CDI swap as a start to see if it fixes it.
