I have an 85 250r Iv had since 85 it was couple months old with a tank or 2 of gas threw it. I rode it raced it in 85 and some years to follow off and on . I would like to race Unadilla this next year and I don't want to alter my current 250r because Iv had it so long its like a member of the family. I was given a decent frame and some other parts a couple years ago so that's were this thread comes in. Im going to build a liquid r for racing and keep my 85 for riding and occasional drag racing. I have a lot of parts stashed for the build Iv been buying what I need as I find. 3ww and trx250r have been awesome for buying good part at reasonable prices aswell as Craigslist. Only part from Ebay is the motor. Im going to turn this thread into a build thread when build starts. 236757

I did a frame-up rebuild on one of my R's about 3 years ago now. It was the trike I had back when I was in high school that I sold a year or two after I graduated. It went around to about 4 other people before I got it back in a completely flogged state. I really enjoyed doing that build and the members here on 3WW were a huge help in getting the parts I needed often times for half the price one would pay on Ebay.

Post up a WTB in the classifieds and I'm sure some of the same folks who hooked me up with good parts for great prices will pop in with offers.

Thanks Man.I have a want ad started.I have some parts on the way.The frame is going to get some gusseting.Theres an mx track opening up near me.They plan on having a trike class.MX is alot harder on the frame than TT flat track. When I start the build I will post what I got for free,what I got from 3ww,and else where along with a final price.

Lastnight when I got home from work I had 2 packages . 1 from Steve (thesteveman) a new twist throttle cable with cap . The 2nd package was from another member from trx250r site . It contained rear brake caliper,rear grab bar,2 14 tooth front sprockets,1 37 tooth rear sprocket,clutch cable with holder,stator with cdi and coil,Boyesen rad valve. I didn't get pics yet my phone battery was dead.

My friend raced his ltr there at a practice day, it looked pretty awesome. I definitely want to make it thereally, I'm getting a full mx set up quad that I want to race this summer also.

I raced my 83 200r there on the 2nd practice. Nice track great for begginers.I met Greg Huntly and his wife and 1 of their friends. We practiced with the quads.Im planning to rebuild my aircooled 82 250r quad so I can do some more racing. Id like to try TT on quad and there are some crosscountry racing at the ski resorts near Syracuse.Rich Daly has them aswell as hill climbs.

In case you haven't thought about it . If you want to get the most power out of the engine, you need to get the compression up to over 185 and this means you would need race gas . Also, one area many people don't consider when building a high perf engine is ignition timing . This often needs to be changed to get the optimum perf and it is not adjustable on that model, however, you can buy an adjustable kit for it . This is definitely something I would do if you don't install a CR ignition etc.

Ok, I have done a lot of flywheel weight testing on both motocross bikes and 3 wheelers and can tell you that unless you are a pro level racer, a flywheel that is much lighter than stock will not help you and will likely make you go slower . Even if you are a pro level racer, it still may not help . Flywheels are on there for a reason . If you are less than a pro level racer I would also suggest that you do not get a pro level port job either . In my experience, the best thing is to get an "intermediate" level port job and stick with that until you start winning the intermediate class . Once you are good enough to do that you can modify the cylinder some more if you want but it is kinda hard to "unport" a cylinder . A pro level rider on an average bike will spank the bejesus out of an average rider on a pro level bike every single time.

One constant that will benefit most, if not all skill level riders is more compression.

To be honest, a CR ignition is great but you need to "learn" how to ride the bike all over again. I used it in 2013 racing in Sikeston. The lighter flywheel stalls in the corners. The different curves on the ignition are a plus but to me the stock ignition with the OEM flywheel better suited my riding ability. Plus the sticker price for the entire kit is a pretty big deterrent. if you do get one, make sure its the 2001 and my advice is to ditch the 2001 flywheel and talk to BDT (carlos) about his "modded" stock flywheel for the 2001 CR ignition. Its beefier and doesn't stall as bad.

I started painting some of the hubs and brackets for the 250r racer. Im just going to paint things no powder coating. Id like to paint the fork sliders and triples gloss black also the swingarm. So far the rear axle hubs, disc brake hub and lower gas tank mount brackets are painted gloss black. 238996 238997 239024

Im waiting for the weather to warm up so I can take my frame outside and do some welding on it. Also I want to pull the motor off my 85 250r and take it apart so I can send the cases to BDT for welding. I need to cut down an oem rear bearing carrier tube for my dual row carrier. I want to press out my steering stem so I can change the bearing and put the stem in a nicer lower triple clamp.Im hoping to have this trike done by April first so I can ride it and get it broke in before racing.

Looks like it could also be rust eating the frame from the inside out.

I think just the frame.Im going to get my 81,83 and 85 ready for racing.Im still going to buy the rest of the parts I need.Im thinking about welding in new frame tubes I have some.Barn,I thought it was rusted threw but the frame were the holes are were shiny when I got it from grinding..

I took the ebay motor out of my 85 250r to put rebuilt original motor back in.I pulled the ebay motor apart to check a crack and found out it has more than a crack. The tail piece is broken off it didn't leak any oil. 243601 243602

So are you keeping track of the expenses?

I only ask because I've got almost $1000 left to spend on tires, fluids, fenders, and misc to finish it and ride.

So I went back last night and added up how much my almost scratch built R had cost me so far and I'm into it already for a hair over $5500. I was stunned. The prices of this stuff has really shot up in the last few years

All that OEM, NOS, little stuff really racks up fast. I know I've bought over $400 in just OEM fasteners.

Yes Im keeping track of cost.Im roughly into it so far for $2000.I have a few oem nuts and bolts to buy getting a list together.Im only spray painting things right now.May do powdercoat later on.Other than brakes and boring a cylinder and the few nuts and bolts I have everything.

I have been getting my bolts from the local hardware store.Because of the black frame Im not going to get oem bolts.I don't want specbolts because of the allenheads. With this frame I got a gas tank,rear shock and linkage, radiators and brackets,airbox,overflow tank,Fmf head pipe,dg silencer,wire harness, frame straps under tank,rear grab bar,extended 85 stock swingarm,rear brake pedal,swingarmbolt, bearing carrier and some bolts.All for $200 .The motor mountbolts I got from a Honda car dealer I called and gave them the size and they cross referenced and got these.They look the same as 85 250r..267444 267446.267445

Now that I'm retired I will have more time to spend on trike builds and home improvement projects. Plan with this is to do red accents with the black.The other parts I bought will go on the 500r build.

Belmetric sells about any bolt needed. Crazy cheap. Might help you in future. I use them for shock turn knob screws which honda used m3.5....talk about hard to find.

Thanks, that sounds fun. It would be cool to get up to High Voltage on an open practice day (on a less-crowded day, lol) and play around. They require a tether so I would have to get/put one of those on. What would be awesome is if they would build a TT track up there, I love the turns but don't have the stones for the jumps anymore, haha.

Not much progress in past couple weeks I had to weld up and retread a couple spots on the frame.One headstay mount hole and one rear grab bar mount hole.Plus I chased all the threaded holes with my tap.Yesterday I dropped 2 cylinders off to be bored one for this trike and one aircooled r cylinder. Also started putting lower end together.Painted a couple more brackets

Got my cylinders back from the machine shop they did a great job boring them.The shop owner is a great guy loves old-school 2 strokes he's into sleds.He told me the guy that bores the cylinders has over 15 years of experience. He charged me $54 per cylinder with tax.

Jason ,I have heard Roggies but haven't had them do any work for me.I will keep them in mind.I ordered some more parts today.Red radiator hoses and some more bolts ,nuts,washers and those rubber cushions for the regulator. I ordered an extra one if you want it.If you want to race Moto Missions in Clayville ny is having a night cross this Friday they are just past Utica and they have a trike class.Stuck in the Muck is having atv obstacle course Saturday and atv drags Sunday and Paradise is having a tt race Saturday. 267609

I haven't had them do any work for me either, I've just lived around/in Croghan my whole life so I know all the guys that work there, lol. Ah, ordering parts is one of my favorite parts of the process, those hoses look pretty cool. Yeah, if that cushion works out/fits just let me know how much you want for it and I'll shoot down to Carthage and grab it. Thanks for the heads up on the racing but I'd need some seat time on a practice track before I'd jump in a race, haha. A friend at church is building a track currently and said I could use it but even with that, working 50+ a week and an 8, 5, and 1 year old at home, not sure if I'd have the time to race any. Cylinder looks great too.

Finally my parts came in.The red radiator hoses were almost a month getting here.Took a week and a half for the Honda shop to get a few bolts and washers. I got the forks cleaned and rebuilt.Motor is mostly together and in the frame. Its sitting on all three wheels.267753 267754

So today I got the motor fired up.It started on 5th kick ran like crap and quit.Fired backup after 2 kicks wouldn't rev up.I noticed no exhaust took the silencer off started it still no exhaust so I took the head pipe off and found a wod of insulation in it and the silencer. Cleaned it out fired again runs great but the water pump is leaking out of the weep hole.Im going to order a new mechanical seal for it.

Update I had an extra clutch cover with a good mechanical seal in it.I was able to get it out and put it in my clutch cover.I couldn't use the spare cover it has a crack in it.Next big project for it is the brake system.

I heated it up with my heat gun then used a flat tip screwdriver and prayed it out working around the lip.I don't think it was seated all the way in.I couldn't pry the one out of my good clutch cover I did destroy that one getting it out.

Got some more work done on the trike.Mounted tank,airbox ,filter,kill switch,shifter,chain,tank scoops and painted the handle bars.Im thinking about using the brakes off my other R and taking it for a ride.Current pic not sure I will keep the trx rear fenders on it.Between the rear fender tank and front full Maier fender its 3 different shades of red.267823 267824

I ordered the black seat cover with white logo and rear brake pads.Later I'm going to order the other cover and put it on my spare seat. Also need caliper rebuild kit and brake lines.I found a front one from Galfer.Anyone have a 85-86 rear master cylinder they'd sell.

I finished 2022 tt race season at Paradise Speedway 1st overall track Champion in open class and 3rd in point for 200 class.This was the last year for racing at Paradise the owners sold the track and so far the new owner isn't going to have any racing as of this morning.270472

The guy that bought it owns the land neighboring the track.In an interview Gary the former owner said that the new owner wanted to build an RV park near the track and he was going to lease the track to someone else to run.But that doesn't seem to be the case .Also there was talk that the new owner was going to use it as a gravel pit for his business. January 7th we went to the track to pickup our year end awards and Gary's wife said one guy that wanted to lease the track wanted her and Gary to pay for the changes he wanted to do.

I started another spare parts build.I had a 84 250r frame in my garage since 94.I dug it out couple years ago and fixed what was broken and painted it.Yesterday I started putting it together. So far it's a roller with the engine in it.
