View Full Version : How much tire is too much for 250es?

Not size, more concerned with tread. When I was building up Jeeps the issue was not clearance, that could be fixed with a simple lift. But when we were going past 35" tires we needed to start changing gears, using chriogenicly treated axle shafts. Basically we had to upgrade all the drive components. With the crazy tires out there like silverbacks, outlaws, etc. Should I be worried about breaking drive components. Not going to beat this, only put around and use the snow plow in the winter for a short driveway but like the monster lugs

I haven't specifically used those tires.. But the abusive situations I have put my 250ES through leads me to believe that the clutch will likely slip before anything else lets go.

From what I've seen on You Tube, it seems like they go with a gear reduction for more than about 27". I know it's not by any means scientific, but just my observation.

keep in mind it is a 200cc motor. even with the latest most highest performance level biggest you can get is a 283cc. while that sounds great, it would not last long at that level. average dependable is about a 223cc. more than that your chancing problems.
that being said, everything has it's limits. the bigred has a hi and a low for a reason. now you do not need big hugh 28" tires. no point. the red does not need it. a nice set of stock sized 22-23" tires with decent traction and your set.

As you probably already know, larger tires will also increase traction if all else remains the same.
As far as breaking things if you increase the traction, it ain't gonna happen under normal use, however, I would avoid speed shifting it.
Keep in mind that you don't want to use thick engine oil like 20w-50 in cold environments.

The 250es is a 249cc motor without hi and low range.

I was in exactly the same predicament last year when I got my 250es. I went with stock size goodyear rawhide 3s. I read up on gear reductions and decided I didn't want to put that much money or effort into a trike that would only see mild trails. If you go too large you'll also need a lift. That puts more stress onto the drive shaft. Hope my rambling helps you in some way.

There's a guy around my area with 32 inch silverbacks on a big red. It has a trx300 top end with a big bore kit. It has no problem turning those tires in the mud, and it's waaaay faster top end than with the 25's.

Not mine (it's from Facebook buyt he may be a member here too) but its a big red on 30's. They're expensive (unless you can machine and tig weld) but you can also gear gear reductions made for them.

I thought the 250es had 25" tyres standard?
