The carb on my 1985 ytm225 leaks gas out of the drain on the bottom of the bowl. I tried to open and close the drain screw. No change. I switched to my other carb, same thing. I had a guy suggest lowering the float height. I'm going to try that tomorrow. Any other suggestions?

It's the float needle. The needle that controls the flow of gasoline.

Think I can clean it up and make it work?

If there is debris holding it open, yes. More often than not they just need replaced. Even though they look good, I've had them still leak. Replaced it and haven't had my carb leak for years now.

Every carb I've had has dents in the side of the bowl from people smacking them with rocks and various items. Must be a common problem lol.

Ok. Thanks. Just hoping for some good luck so I can ride it around this weekend.

Well I had a little good luck. I just found my Timberwolf carb rebuild kit and it comes with a new needle and seat. How do you replace the seat? I've never done it.

Take the pin out that holds the floats in and pull the floats out and it should pull up with it. It's hooked onto the floats.

I'm talking about the seat. The needle is easy to replace.

There should be a small Phillips screw and a C shaped retaining tab underneath it that are holding the seat in place. When the screw and retainer are removed you can pull out the seat.

It has a rubber O-ring and they can be stuck in there pretty good. I usually end up gripping it gently with pliers and try to rotate them while pulling up. It can take a good deal of force to get them out.

Make sure that O ring is in good condition, or replace it when you put the other seat in. A light coating of petroleum jelly on the O-ring will make it go in a lot easier.

I believe the original needles on that model of carb are metal and they would wear a ring around them as time went on, so cleaning them once a groove has started to form usually won't work, they need to be replaced. Any new one you get your hands on should have a rubber tip and should last a lot longer than the stock needles did.

Ok thanks El. I just have to wait until Thanksgiving morning to try. I just won't have a chance earlier.
