so, i recently got an 86 200x. tore the side cover off to check out the internals and it seemed to be in alright condition. the one thing i noticed was the chain that drives the oil pump is very loose. so much slack that it could possibly touch the case and shows signs of slight wear to the case. could the chain just be worn and stretched? is this a common thing to run into? thanks for any help. wanna clear this up before i waste a gasket and put it back together. matt

Yes they are sorta loose fitting, you need the thin steel plate cover. If your chain is hitting the case i'd replace it. A couple years ago someone on here was making them i cant remember who? While your in there take the two oil pump bolts out and check your pump gears, theres no gasket behind the pump just a snug fit, pull it out straight. 237207
While your in there, if you havent you should clean the oil filter rotor. I replaced the philips screws w/allen heads screws (easier for next time)237208

Cool, thanks for the tips. First time playing with one of these 200 motor. I cleaned the rotor and like the idea of the hex screws. As for the chain, mine looks noticeably looser than your picture. Maybe I'll see if I can locate one. We're the 200 motors the same as the 200x of the generation?

The chain if u can find one new from:
86/87 200x
Tr200 fatcat
86-88 trx200sx
I believe thats all your choices in the chain size u need.
Heres a pic w/chain pushed to right 237209 about 1/4 inch side to side play.
I dont think theres many miles on this extra bottom end (just to give idea)

There all sloppy. I have found a few motors without that plate guide and each chain flopped around like a fish.....

ok cool, thanks guys. so my chain has about 3/4 inch play which seems excessive. ill try and locate a chain and sprocket. if not, oh well. so another thing, i was putting around and spun the clutch by hand. heard a strange noise and noticed that there was a spring behind it attached to a mechanism (not sure yet what its for) that was rubbing the backside. push the spring out of the way and they didnt touch. strange to me cause it doesnt look like it can be route another way. ideas???

Kick shaft spring? If u turned that shaft while case is open, make sure to reset it (spring) before you put case cover back on.
Or gear selector shaft spring (pic) 237262
I have this open motor 5 feet from me if you need any more pics
"Just be careful in that case or you'll find out real quick that there is certain parts you wont find anywhere."
If your really worried about the chain, drive down to mass i'll give you a (used) one that may fit tighter.

Thanks shep, I'm going to try and post a pic but it's the shifter spring that is touching the backside of the clutch basket. Maybe I'll try and bend it a little to gain the clearance I need.

Dont bend it, the gear selector shaft may be pushed/pulled out too far. First try to change gears while turning output shaft (small sprocket) if it binds/doesnt work right The shaft may have to slide back. There close but that spring should not hit.. Just take your time and try to watch how it works, have someone turn sprocket slowly as u change gears.
I'll put up a pic that may help: 237287 straight edge across gasket surface shift rod is a dime thickness back. Hope that makes sense.
Ok- i pulled my assembly out to have the issue your having, the pencil point is aiming at a little shaft rivited on to that outer plate, make sure its pushed into the slot behind it. Dont have to change gears just move it around a little it should all fall into place.237293

so this is a little off topic as what the original post was, but after looking a little deeper into the wiring harness, someone has been in there and hacked it together. electrical tape and twisted wires everywhere. also, the voltage regulator was just missing totally. so im in need of a good non hacked up harness and a voltage regulator. ebay is a pain in the ass and i would rather pay someone here. anyone have anything i am in search of they are willing to part with?

Good to meet u matt.
There is a washer on the lower chain tensioner shaft actually 1 on either side of tensioner so theres 2. And nut
I will put a pic of the 86 and 87 kick shaft the 86 is about 3mm smaller so you really should find a decompression cable, i hear stories of the smaller shaft shearing off without it.
If you look closely at the shafts theres a washer that needs to be on the shaft before the cover is put on (it usually sticks to the cover w/oil when u take the cover off). I dont think the washer u showed me was it. Dont use any rtv just a thin layer of oil on the gasket. Heres two cable attachment pics also. Hope this helps
--i just checked one of the washers on tensioner is actually a collar. Last pic

Show a picture of that little 3-wheeler you showed me here or if your not sure how, send it to me and i will.
And a pic of that washer u have next to a quarter to judge size, someone here may recognize it.

When I get my cylinder and head back for the 87 200X motors, I'm changing the clutch; So, I'll see how loose that chain is in my new take out motor.

thanks for the help shep. ill get some pics up tomorrow when i get home from work. the decomp lever at my cylinder head is actually almost like a choke lever as it is used to push up by hand. doesnt have a place to attach the barrel end of a cable.

Interesting, thanks again for that info. So, I ordered a gasket for my clutch cover and it's the wrong one. Fits where the oil screen is and lines up well just isn't large enough to go around the back part of the cover where the kicker is. Maybe for a 200s motor? Can anyone send me a link so I can order the right one this time.

EBAY - Centauro top end gasket kits cheap (he gave me a deal on 6), I bought them but he listed more.

AJCracing usually has 86/87 200X gasket kits, or Rocky Mountain ATV. I usually stick with Vesrah but never pay the usual price.

Yes, you simply have a 200SX rocker arm cover. If you change that shaft, you'll need a decompression cable and all brackets. They are discontinued and very hard to find...

Matt i'm not sure what your willing to spend but theres a rocker box w/the right shaft on egay for $35
All u need is the shaft parts maybe he would go cheaper? (Its kinda ugly)
Also theres a decomp cable w/brackets for $60
These parts would head you in the right direction but its your call.
Its not very often these parts show up for (not too bad of a price)
im not sure how to do egay links so......maybe this worked

Your gasket is probably for a 86/87 honda trx200sx - theres no kicker so (kicker bubble is not there)
I tried looking for just that gasket but its cheaper for the whole kit (dirtcrashers) lower link is a full kit i think?
You could just go to a honda dealer near u, not sure if its sold seperately. Call them and find out?
Gotta be careful on ebay when it says 83-86 its not what u want. Here's another below
