So i had posted in another thread about a trike my neighbor has had sitting for years (7+). Unfortunately he wasnt home this time for me to ask about it. I know its an early 250r. Anyone know where the date is on these? I didnt look too close, but didnt see anything on the frame. What would be a good offer? I read these tanks were bad about rusting. The paint is still good on tank and inside completely rust free.

The VIN should be on the steering neck. If I zoom in on that pic it looks like the vin has been ground off. That's an 81/82 and it looks pretty rough. Also I see some channel welded to the back of the frame. That will be a project for sure.

Whats the difference in the 81 and 82? Is a 1st gen 250r gonna be tough to get goin? Engine turns over easy. All engine parts are there except air box. Seat and rear fenders MIA. It has had some welding done, idk why. Im cleanin up my 200x, this would prolly be more of a trike just to ride and not worry about

Not too much changed between the years concerning the power plant. 81 had drum brakes on the rear. Those could be different forks. 200x maybe?

Looks like most of the stuff is there. I'd say no more than 300 dollars. Looks to be an 81 with drum brakes. Parts may be hard to find. The Vin does look to be ground off

definitely see some grinding on the steering neck. I think the vin is on the other side of the neck though. My take on this.......thoroughly check the frame and look for anything that doesn't look right. If there is no vin on the frame at all(might be on other side), RUN FAR AWAY FROM IT. When the vin number is ground off the police can retrieve it by using a type of acid that shows where the steel was stamped and where it is stamped, the metal is more dense and shows a different color.

The whole rear (call it a subframe) looks homemade, aaye??

Those rear tires look like lawn mower tires. Gotta love those! If you just want a rider, it could be a good one. You wouldn't have to drop a fortune into it. Just complete it. As long as you're happy with it, that's what counts.

Wondering what the hose clamp on the axle is doing?

Assuming that VIN number removal was never a performance mod I'd stay far away from anything that needed grinding in that area.

Well, the property owner says its his buddys trike, and sat there since '06. They are mower tires, and the welded steel was for a crappy seat he used to have on it. Yamaha light lol. I didnt look at the VIN yet. Im not too worried about the VIN being ground. Its sat there for 10yrs and i live out in the boonies. I could try a bill of sale, but with no VIN itd be useless

Doesn't look like the frame has front air scoops or the boxed area for the airbox to fit in, it's an 81'.

Pros and cons of having an '81 250r?

Cons: different front hub / wheel, solid rotor, drum rear, airbox breathes through the seat, no readily available plastics. AFAIK the Maier plastics for 81-82 do not have the cutout for the 81 airbox.

Pros: First year 250R.

Since this one doesnt have the airbox, can i simply run a filter off the rear of the carb? The front end looks similar to my '86 200x. But i wont know for sure without measurements.

Cosmetics wouldnt be an issue, ill leave that for the x. So as a runner, is it even worth puttin money into to have a second machine? Itd be the go to trike to just run around on
