I noticed today that the vintage club I race with recently posted photos of the National I raced at last week and they had a few of me on there.
This is from the first race of the day which I was in and it was only 250's. I'm doing my best Bob Hannah impersonation but I it was weak cuz I still had one foot on the pegs. I was in second place at this point and fortunately had a decent lead over everyone behind me and was even pulling away from them, and I was only riding at 90%, so luckily, I didn't wear myself out, cuz I had 3 more motos to go after this with the next moto being the open class.
https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/zyAAAOSwdFZcfzFI/s-l1600.jpg
This photo was taken the second the gate dropped for the first moto for the open class race, which is any size bike up to 1996, but 99% of them are big bores which are nearly impossible to even keep in sight on this track.
https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/yesAAOSwsv5cfzF0/s-l1600.jpg
This photo was around taken around 3 seconds later, and my poor little 250 is already getting spanked by the big bore bikes, and several of them also spanked me throughout the entire race, so I got a little bummed out at first and figured I would never be able to keep up with them on my 250, HOWEVER, after a while, I started to get pissed off, and then I got more pissed off, so when the gate dropped for the second open class race, it was a different story. I got a much better start and only got passed by 1 guy, whom I temporarily immediately passed back on the inside, and when I did that he got pissed off and yelled "Hey", as if I wasn't supposed to pass him back cuz he's so fast, so I politely yelled "f you" at him (cuz remember, I am a kind and courteous racer) and he then proceeded to pass me right back on the next straight and started pulling away.
I just kept on poundin and poundin away, and by the last 2 laps of the race, I caught back up to him (he was in 3rd place) and to 2nd place, and tried to make a super tight inside pass on him just 20 feet before the finish line, and I got my front wheel next to him in the turn but I didn't have enough hp to pull past him going up the finish line jump, but I didn't care, at least I know I would have definitely soon passed both of them if the race had gone for another lap or two, so I was quite happy with that race as well.
https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/~~gAAOSwsupcfzFd/s-l1600.jpg
Anyway, even though I consistently rode like crap in a few turns (because they had deep ruts and I do not ride deep ruts), and until the last race I was only going at about 90%, it was a very good day, cuz I know I can easily take at least 1 second off my lap times at that track with that layout if I want to. They are using the same track this weekend but are changing the layout, so I will see what happens Sunday, however, I certainly don't expect to do as well as I did at the last race but I will soon see, but as long as I don't get "damaged" while riding, I will always consider it to be a good at the races.
Unfortunately (or fortunately), I won't have my big bore Grim Reaper (YZ465) ready for this weekend's race, which means that the chances that I will still be alive and able to walk under my own power by Sunday afternoon is very high. I installed a 1 tooth larger rear sprocket and brand spankin new rear tire on my 250 today, so that will definitely help me a little against those pesky big bore trench diggers.

Great story

What year was your Husky?
I'm pretty sure the one in the race is a 1979 CR390.
I'm no speed demon by any means these days, and I have serious reservations about racing this 465 (which is now a 476). I only started riding again because it's hard for me to exercise and I was gettin a little lathargic, so I figured riding would be good exercise but it wouldn't seem like exercise cuz it is fun.
If the 465 has more power than I want to deal with I can just sell it and fix up my 1978 YZ400. A 78 YZ400 was the last bike I raced in the Pro class and it worked pretty well, so I already know how to setup the engine and suspension on that one, however, it is also the bike I broke both bones in my leg on when I crashed in a deep rut (which is why I now refuse to ride in deep ruts), when I was practicing at Saddleback for a big upcoming race, and that ended my Pro motocross racing days.
I started racing again just over a year later but I found that I didn't have the desire to try and work back up to being as fast as I previously was, so I soon quit dirt riding altogether until I got a job at Kawi in 1983, and then after around 6 weeks, they decided to separate R & D into 2 different departments, one which was for motorcycles and the other was for ATV's and new concepts, and I had only ridden a 3 wheeler for maybe a couple hours total in my entire life, lol, and not long after that I was racing....yup....I worked it in here....The TECATE...The Most Powerful 3 Wheeler In The Universe! https://www.mustang.org.au/forum/Smileys/smilies/hysterical.gif
OMG....not his TECATE slogan again!

Barns, I see on the parts fiche that there isn't a shim between your kicker shaft and the case cover like the Tri-Z has. Looks your cover is a bit worn, so I'm wondering if it would be an idea to try and fit one it to protect that cover if there's room. I have some that are only about .005" thick with the same I.D. as the Tri-Z shaft.
Thanks for the offer, I appreciate it, but actually there is no wear on the cover, the photo may just make it look that way. Fortunately, they use a plastic sleeve/spacer over the shaft, and that is what would rub on the case. I do have around .010" of end play in it which I could use a shim for to reduce the next time I have the cover off (which I hope will not be for a very long time) if I wanted to. The shaft od is around 20 mm. I haven't looked at the machine shims at the hardware store yet but they may have something close. If they don't, not maybe a trans shim off some motorcycle will fit.

That's actually an 82 but yours looks nearly new. The 83 had the all new plastic design etc. My bikes are not clean at all, but they run and handle well which is my biggest concern. Mitch Payton of Pro Circuit used to build Huskys for people back in the day and even built up some new CR Husky's to sell outright. A friend of mine named Dean Modesett used to make pipes for the Huskys.
I actually got to meet The Rhinestone Cowboy Kent Howerton when I was in Japan doing development work on the 86 TECATE. We ended up hanging out for the day and doing some sight seeing and had lunch at a steak house, then we went to a musical instrument store because he wanted an electric keyboard but knew nothing about them, so I picked one out for him and he bought it. He was very nice and very down to earth.

Might surprise you to know that there is life outside of petty disagreements on the internet, like going for a three wheeler ride. Since Fabs does his share of wrenching, I'm fairly certain he'll forgive my delayed posting in lieu of repairing 2 of our own vehicles, 1 for an elderly neighbor, and re-installing the radiator for my skidsteer that had to be rebuilt, as well as replacing the bad water pump in the skiddy before this storm hit. These kinds of activities keep me from being married to repair shops and stealership garages, and paying someone to come plow my driveway.
Went out and got some video, but mounting the camera to the handle bars didn't work. Too much vibration. I'll have to try the chest mount strap, worked great on a quad run a coupla weeks ago after a previous storm.

The Power company is removing these trees for me. The lines were shorting out on one of the tree's, burning one of them a couple different times. The tree company is classifying this as storm damage due to high winds so it's my responsibility to clean up after they get them down. That fine by me saves myself some huge bucks just getting those ratty things out of there. we hated those trees. The power co. Removed 4 other ones some years back for free.

Well today on my way home after buying another police bike at an auction, I got stuck in the horrendous traffic caused by the dreaded "Poppy People", and it took me 2 f___ing hours to go just 15 f___ing miles, with the last mile taking 45 f___ing minutes. There were probably 50,000 f___ing gawkers out with many of them parked and hiking, while others just did a "drive by" viewing, and some took busse's that were hired to transport people to and from some locations.

Yeah, it's beautiful here this time of year, and this area has one of the highest accessible densities of Poppy's in all of California, so it is listed in every friggen California Tour Guide, but unfortunately, the only thing that grows in my yard is friggen weeds, while my neighbors yard is full of wild Daisy's, I kid you not.
Unfortunately, the closest alternate route is a around a 20 mile longer trip, which in hindsight would have been a far better option. There are several small side streets thru part of this narrow valley corridor that I frequently use to avoid the usual traffic, but these were extremely crowded as well because of a bazillion other people trying to avoid this annual mess.

https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/EEEAAOSwHcdckEwa/s-l1600.jpg
and " ...the agony of defeat." for this guy....and no, I did not bump him off the track....but I would have if he was in my way! https://www.mustang.org.au/forum/Smileys/smilies/leaving.gif
https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/xSYAAOSwCnpckEuL/s-l1600.jpg
He crashed at a very technical section of the track. There was was a double jump that one had to be going pretty fast to double, then immediately after there was a wide turn with a huge bank on the outside that one could use to keep from flying off the track...if one knew how to turn. This guy was maybe 50 plus years old riding way over his head and/or beyond his physical capability, on his new billion dollar bike made of prefabulated amulite, so I'm guessing he sees some other people doing this jump and he's feeling his oats and wants to try and relive his youth or who knows what, so he jumps the the double....but after he landed, he didn't even try to stop for some reason, so he flew up the face of the big berm (which was now a big jump with the angle he hit it at) and then dropped around 10 feet straight down and hit the wire fence where his bike then stopped and he continued past it and bounced on the ground a few times before stopping 30 feet directly in front of our truck, giving my ol' lady a perfect view of the entire event. Needless to says (but I will anyway for entertainment value) they hauled him off in the meat wagon, but he was still breathin at the time.
Now, onto my adventures for the day, which turned out to be an exceptionally good day for me. https://www.mustang.org.au/forum/Smileys/smilies/smile.gif
This was the second race I needed to do with this particular club to qualify for their big National they are having on the same track on the 30th & 31st of this month. This was also the day they were going to evaluate my riding to see if I was safe enough to ride their National or something like that and to see if I was in the class they felt was appropriate for me to be in, so they gave me a nice, bright red sticker with the letter E emblazoned on it so everyone at the race could see who was being evaluated, and of course it just so happened that I was the only one, so this made me and my 38 year old bike stand out even more.
This particular racing club has nothing but newer bikes in it, and the majority of those are 450cc 4 strokes, cuz it seems that most older people (28 and up) are kinda lazy and don't want to exert any more effort than they have to, so I am the only vintage bike there which makes me quite conspicuous. I signed up for 2 different classes but only used the second class to get more practice on the track, so we won't go into how I finished in that one.
The track conditions were xlnt with a lot of traction, which unfortunately, is better for the 4 strokes than it is for my bike, so it is harder for me to keep up with them when the tracks are like this.
This race was the first one of the day, and the riders were separated into different groups. I was in the slower group that was supposed to leave on the second gate drop, and there were 12 guys in this group separated by age groups with me being the oldest by around 10 years from the next youngest guy with some being in around 30, so all of them were much younger than I was. Well, I know from my previous racing experience that it is far easier to start in front and work myself backwards then it is to start in the back and work myself forward, so I have been practicing my starts, plus making small gearing changes to my bike, and for this race I had made one last gear change, plus I put on a new rear tire.
I always start in second, and when the gate dropped I nailed it, and after around 50 feet I could tell I was just barely in the lead, so I held that sucker wide open as long as I could into the first left hand turn, and there was one guy to the left of me that was just a wheel length behind me and he held it on as well, so he passed me coming out of that turn, but I was quite happy because I finally holeshot a race again and smoked a bunch of other newer big bore bikes on the start in the process, and was now in front of them on the track.
This track had several double jumps that I didn't have the llevos to jump, and my suspension would have completely bottomed out hard even if I did, so I had to go much slower over these than many of the other guys in my race, then make up the lost time on the straights or in the turns, and because of this, 3 more guys passed me by the end of the first lap, but I wasn't giving up that easily and just kept going a little faster every lap as I learned the track better, and by the end of around the 4th lap, I had passed all of them back, then the guy that was leading passed me back and I passed him back in the turn after the technical section. He got me back again and held the lead on the last lap, and he kept taking the turn in the technical section on the outside, so on the last double before that turn I went a little faster than I previously was then slammed on both brakes when I landed and slammed it really hard into the inside of that turn then nailed the throttle wide open coming out of it while slipping the clutch to keep the rpm up and I ended up beating him to the flag by exactly .19 seconds.
The track had dried out considerably by the time of my second moto for this class, so several sections were baked as hard as concrete with a light layer of sand on the top which makes then pretty slippery, which is actually good for me but ended up being very bad for everyone else in my class. https://www.mustang.org.au/forum/Smileys/smilies/therethere.gif
When I lined up for the second moto, I lined up around 12 feet further to the left to reduce the amount of people that could be on the inside of me in the first turn.
When the gate dropped, I got another good start and nailed it again and sailed into the first turn a full bike length in front of all those pesky 4 strokes, and held the lead until the whoop section where the guy I was battling with for the lead in the first moto kept passing me, and that sob passed me there again like I was standing still. Well, that demoralized me a little, however, he was not in the same class as I was so I did not have to beat him to win, so I thought for around 10 seconds about just letting him go and not risking crashing or getting tired trying to keep up with him again, but then I decided to at least try to stay close for the next half a lap to see what he does in the other sections, and I was still going faster than him in some of them, soooo, I said fk it, and decided to not be a pussy and try to race with him again, so at the end of the first lap, he went on the outside of the turn in the technical section as he always had previously, so I simply stuffed it into the inside of the turn like I always had previously.
We were then side by side going over the finish line jump and into the next turn, which he again took wide, so I again went straight instead of turning and cut him off again and just kept going as fast as I could. After half a lap I noticed that he was not catching up, and after the next lap, he was slowly dropping back, so I just kept hammarin away to stay in front, and after another lap, I had caught up to the the tail end of the riders that left 20 seconds before us on the gate that were in a higher skill level class, and by the end of the race, I had passed 4 of them and was about to pass number 5 in the technical section, but unfortunately, he took the inside of that turn, so there was no way for me to pass him, but I didn't mind cuz I had just totally spanked the crap out of everyone in my class and nearly half the guys in the group that left before us, even though their bikes literally have around 20 more hp than mine and a bazillion times more torque, so I was a very happy camper. I ended up finishing around 10 seconds in front of the guy I battled with in both races and around 30 seconds in front of the next closest guy in my class.
Now...their next race is their National, where I don't expect to do nearly as good but I don't really care, cuz I'm just happy to be able to be out racing instead of doing something else far less fun, like being at home pulling weeds. https://www.mustang.org.au/forum/Smileys/smilies/thud.gif

This is pretty cool Shep and I'm sure you've shared on this forum the process of making these seals. My question is how do you determine the correct formula for the rubber that you use? I mean wouldn't a seal consistency be different from say a clutch adjuster cap/plug? And some of the seals that we use have that spring in the middle, is this something you don't worry about or are you able to replace those also? Have you considered duplicating whole sets for different trikes?
Either way seems like a pretty good ability to have making one's own seals..

Secret formula well sorta :D. there’s a learning curve to get past- a clutch adj cover I don’t believe can be done. I can’t get or have found a firm enough rubber, well I have but trying to degas that type before pouring time won’t allow.
This mold is a fail (yellow one) so I’ll show it:naughty:
The second I can’t show but I have had good results “but” the rubber is too soft. Could do hard plastic ones (clutch adj) but they need to flex to slip/clip on (groove)

I’ve found this hobby only works well if you have lots of spare time/ I have some but not nearly enough........
On my wishlist is a pressure chamber like a five gallon one but they get pricey fast!
My vacuums chamber is fine but a pressure chamber on the other end would be nice (someday)
Spring in the middle seals (no way) we’ll not me;)

I needed to replace some Honda 200x seat/tank runners too so a little mold work and I can make some( oem is still available) but my cost is about 25cents- lower right in picture 257850

Dam shop, trying to find the right consistency isn’t difficult there’s a few different charts to look at to get close. But if a part needs to be a stiff rubber part but it’s thin it’ll still have a lot of flex. That mold the yellow two piece one in my other post is rubber stiff like a hocky puck-was the only molding material I had on hand (didn’t work well) 257853
My biggest issue is color blending- I need to make a hugger orange headlight shell I gave up for a while and need to try again...not as easy as it seems maybe I should take third grade again:rolleyes:

Well here's yet another self serving and pointless update to my racing resurrection.
Friday, amongst some other things, I installed a set of Boyesen dual stage fiberglass reeds in my 1980 YZ250 just to see if they actually do much. I wanted to test them back to back with stock reeds, but with the nearby track being closed due to the rains it isn't possible. After I installed them I rode the bike in my neighborhood for a minute just to see how the jetting was in case I needed to change it because I didn't want to jet it any more than necessary at the race, and it ran cleanly so I left it that way.
Saturday I raced on a track called Cahuilla MX Park, which I hadn't been on before, so I didn't have a known reference point to compare how it ran with the new reeds to how it ran with the original ones, but I figured I would at least be able to tell if it was noticeably slower or the throttle response was noticeably different etc, which it wasn't, so I will leave the new reeds in and ride it at the OTHG National next week where I will have a better idea of how the 2 different reeds compare to each other.
The start at the race Saturday was long and sandy and uphill, which put me at a greater disadvantage to the newer 4 strokes compared to a flat and harder ground start. Fortunately, at this race they let riders do practice starts, so I did several of them, and on the second one my front wheel lifted off the ground a couple inches when I hit 3rd gear, and I thought, holy sh_t, this thing runs good and that new hard terrain tire is hooking up great in the sand.
There were around 18 people on the gate for my race, and when the gate dropped, I nailed it, and half way up that long start straight I could see that I was in the lead, so I'm thinking, holy sh_t again (cuz I think that a lot), I'm gonna hole shot all these guys...and then I pulled the clutch in and shifted into what should have been 5th gear, and when I let it out and nailed the throttle, it was still in 4th friggen gear, so as people are starting starting to pass me, I tried shifting into 5th again and it still wouldn't go. So needless to say, I got a killer....last place start. I then started picking a few people off, but around half way thru the race, my bike quit shifting altogether and got stuck in 4th gear, so I rode around like that slipping the crap out of my poor clutch exiting the turns while occasionally trying to shift it, and it finally started shifting again near the end of the race.
I was hoping to have better luck on the start for the second moto, so I lined up in the same place, and when the backwards falling gate dropped, it fell right on top of my wheel because I was too friggen close to it, so I backed up enough to let it drop (by which point everyone else had left), and then I nailed it, and the sob decided to shift this time and I actually caught up to the end of the pack at the 90 degree turn at the end of the start. I then quickly started picking off people from there, but by then the front of the pack was long gone.
Anyway, it was great weather, and great track conditions and a fun track, and good practice for me, so now the next stop is the National next week where I will be racing 2 days in a row, as long as I don't crash hard and my bike doesn't break.

I always felt those reeds gave a little more power just below the ‘hit’ and smoothed it out a little, but didn’t do anything up top. So did you open your cases? :pics:
Odly enough, I have never tested aftermarket reeds. I always used stock reeds even in my tecate, with the exception of the aftermarket reed blocks i put on my 84 cr250 and 84 cr125, which came with aftermarket reeds. y guess was that they would't make a significant change so why waste the money.
As far as the installation goes, I just installed them with the reed holder they supply, which replaces the reed stopper as you know, and that was it. i didn't have to change the jetting or needle position or air screw etc which seemed a little odd to me although i may try a smaller main since my plug is still nearly black but this engine is a bit odd. It came stock with a 370 and it was a little rich when i got it, so i put a 360 in it and went up on the pilot it had and it has carbureted flawlessly ever since, but it has always simply refused to kick stat when it is cold.
when i had the reed block off when i first got it, i looked inside the intake to see if i could see any mods to the cylinder because i was curious since it had a dg sticker on the front fender, and had 30 mm added to the head pipe and had the trans oil volume nicely hand stamped on the clutch cover which stated a higher oil level than a stock engine, and this is something i had never seen before. It also had an original white brothers mono shock sticker on the rear shock reservoir and scott performance decals on the forks, and when i took the suspension apart, the damper rods were modified and it had special fork springs, and the rear shock had the white brothers mod and an expensive dual spring mod. So when i looked in the intake, i saw 2 boyesen ports added from the intake to the lower transfer port in the case, so i am guessing that the engine was modified by dg back in the day, and that someone raced this in the pro class, because none of these upgrades were cheap at the time, and were only needed if you were really fast.
from your description of how the reeds worked for you, i would say that, that is also similar to my initial feeling, and maybe i can tell more next week on a track i am more familiar with, either way, they certainly didn't make it noticeably faster, but my main goal was to try and get a little more bottom end out of it without loosing any top end because it is a pipey sob, which makes it really friggen hard to keep in the power band, but i kinda like the challenge even though i would likely go faster on something with a lot more low end and it would be far, far, easier to ride cuz i still have to slip the bejesus out of the clutch in every single corner and off of nearly every single jump, but when it comes alive and hooks up, it is blazing, blazing, fast for what it is, so i have to blaze down the straights at literally wot whenever possible, then go harder into the turns than everyone else, because i will typically be slower coming out of them, which is one reason i often take the inside of the turns when trying to pass, then intentionally drift wide to shut the guy on the outside off so he can't out accelerate me out of the turn, lol. i did this exact thing so many times to lots of guys 2 weeks ago that i was literally laughin to myself while i was doin it, it might be a different story next week because a lot of the gun slingers come out for this particular national, so i may simply get my ass smoked bad...in which case i won't be posting a race report.

FYI - The battery for a 2009 prius costs me $1900.00 wholesale from the dealer and is around $2100.00 retail and this is for a new one. It may be the same battery yours uses if you end up needing one. You can also get used and rebuilt ones on Ebay. I bought a rebuilt one for a 2009 prius 4 months ago and it cost me $875.00 installed with a 6 month warranty. Extended warranty of 2 years was around $150.00 more.

Besides catching the worlds biggest brown rat today with some Sun Maid Raisin Bread, then driving him off to a field, far, far, away, and letting him (or her) go, I had to pick up some custom tri stage paint I had made, and while I was in that area, I decided to stop in and check out the local Metal Supply store cuz I needed a few things for some projects I am doing, and one thing I needed was a piece of high grade square or rectangular aluminum bar, and they showed me where the remnants were.
After looking at one rack of them, someone came over and asked what I was specifically looking for, and after I told him, he had me turn around and said, here is some 7075 aluminum, and I though "Holy sh_t", cuz, again, I think that a lot, and it was a size I could easily use after minor trimming except that the bar was 6 feet long and I only needed 8 inches of it, so I asked him if there was a minimum price or quantity that had to be met and he said no, so I thought "Holy sh_t" again, so I asked him how much it would be for just 8 inches of it as I braced myself for sticker shock, and he said, it's $2.25 a pound, and I said "Holy sh_t" again, so I then asked if there was a cutting charge, and he said no, and I said...(well, you probably figured it out by now), and asked him for 8 inches of it and walked out happily caressing my new prize...
Anyway, I am going to use it for a clevis on the backing plate end of my fancy new 6061 aluminum swedge tube that I am using for an adjustable rear brake stay arm in place of the heavier original steel one. I will have a nearby machinist mill it to the dimensions I will supply him with, and that might cost me around $25.00. I am also using a 2024 aluminum rod end on the other end. The complete setup will weigh almost exactly .4 lbs less than the original steel one, which is a big weight savings in such a small part, and is more than I expected to loose.
I also found a place that sells Titanium fairly cheap, so if I get some spare time, I may have the axles and swing arm bolt made from it which will save me around 2 lbs, then have them surfaced hardened with a process where they apply high pressure to the finished part with a ball bearing. I am waiting for prices on that process now.

Sprint cars in dirt track racing did not have weight limits for years so the well funded teams started running titanium parts. Started with lug nut (only 1 lug per wheel on these)....then nerf bars....then fastners....rear end parts. They saw the impact it was going to have so instead of prohibiting titanium, they mandated a minimum weight of 1,400lbs. You could run all the titanium you wanted but you better make weight. Took that advantage away.
Some even got to the point of removing the radiator and plugging the block when running their 2-lap time trial. Wouldn't get hot enough to do any damage and saved weight.
Does 2lbs make a difference? It's racing ain't it?

I dont race Barns but does that make that much of a diffrence in the races you run? I know 2 lbs is a lot but have never had any experience in having to shave weight for speed is all.
We have several wild cotton tail rabbits that we give honey wheat bread and carrots to every night, and we live next to a large field with lots of bushes, so there are a few rats in there as well, and occasionally one of them will figure out there is wheat bread on our sidewalk ever night at the same time and they will sneak up there and steal it from the rabbits while they are trying to eat, so after the rats do this for a while, they get fat and lazy, and when I see a rat out there, I set a metal cage I got from home depot, right near the rabbits food plates then put honey wheat bread in the trap. The rabbits eat all the other bread every night so that only leaves bread in the cage which the offending rat will have to enter if he wants more bread, and I have caught 4 of those sob's this way in the last year. In this case, however, the rat didn't seem to like the wheat bread all that much so we put some Sun Maid Cinnamon Raisin bread in it at night and the next morning he was in the cage and all the bread was gone.
As far as lightening my bike or other race bikes goes, it does make a difference in some cases, but mostly for the higher skill level riders like Bob Hannah etc. He even had titanium brake lever pivot bolts and they were hollow to reduce even more weight, lol. The lighter a motocross bike is, the less effort it takes to throw it around. This doesn't make as much difference in 10 minute races as it does in 45 minute races. The heavier the bike, the faster the rider gets tired. Also, the lighter the vehicle, the faster it can accelerate due to the increased power to weight ratio. Imagine having a 250r engine in a 60 lb mini bike frame. It's the same principal albeit quite exaggerated. Another benefit that can be gained in reducing weight is improved suspension performance, especially if the weight is removed from the suspension.
Also, reducing the weight of the rotating mass on the driven wheels by using lighter rim locks, lighter rims, lighter tires, lighter sprockets, and a lighter chain etc, not only makes the bike easier to fling around, it sucks less hp from the engine. I have basically the lightest locks, rims, tubes, sprockets, chain, and tires available, however, I am still looking for a titanium chain and "affordable" titanium springs. I have the original steel bars on it that I will change for some aluminum ones if I can find nearly the exact same bend, I am very picky about the bar shape for some reason, and if they aren't just right, it disrupts my chi, lol.
Anyway, am I in particular going to go noticeable faster if I take 10 lbs off of a bike...nope, but it does make it a little less tiring to ride, plus removing most of that weight from the wheels helps my suspension a little, and when one gets as old and weak, and decrepit as I am, they can use all the help they can get, but the other main reason I am making it lighter is simply cuz I want to, and want to see how much weight I can shed from it without spending a bazillion dollars and doing anything absurd like making a titanium pipe or carbon fiber rims etc.

And you’re still not running Tubliss filled with helium???
Brake rods are a thing of the past. I think somebody finally figured out that they were way over-engineered. If you look at modern bikes they just tie the caliper mounts to the swing-arm as close to the axle as possible. You could probably weld a tab to your swinger and run a 6” or 8” rod to it.
Check out ProBolt for aluminum fasteners. I swapped out all the non-critical steel bolts for aluminum on my Duck and based on the bag of steel hardware I had left over would guess I lost about 5 pounds off the bike.
Unfortunately I was so pleased with myself that I took the wife out to eat with what little money I had left after buying all that aluminum and my azz gained about 5 pounds at the ensuing meal.

I`ll make an exception for you barns...........it`s must be entertainment at it`s finest watching you race .........are you doing the Del Mar fair or Pomona this year ?
Well if it is a sandy track, it is definitely a barrel of laughs to watch me, cuz I hate sand and can't ride on it on a motorcycle. Two thirds of the Friday course I rode at the Lake Elsinore GP was ultra fine lake bed sand, and my feet were flaylin off the pegs in nearly every corner, and I got beat by some fat old sob on a fkng 1974 Hodaka ACE 100 with stock suspension. He would pass me in the turns in the sand, then when we got to the hard dirt, there was a 1/8th mile long straight section as soon as we left the sand portion, and I would catch him around 1/2 way down that straight and blow by him doing nearly 70 mph, lol, then he would catch me in the sand again and eventually beat me.
I raced at Glen Helen in January for the first time since 1993, and that is a sand track, plus it was muddy from the rains, and I tipped over in a couple slow turns like 4 different times, lol, but I beat some of the 4 strokes up mount saint helens when I could get a decent drive out of the turn at the bottom.
I put a 1 size smaller main in my bike today, so with the boyesen reeds I put in it last week, I am curious as to how it will run tomorrow., I am bringing the stock reeds in case it is slower than it was.
With all the fine tuning and gear change I did over the last couple weeks, I should probably be able to hole shot the majority of the bikes and riders at the vintage races I go to if the start has decent traction and I get off the gate decent. I got a 2nd place start over around 12 guys at the last vintage race in the 250 class, and finished 2nd beating all but one of the expert level riders, so it was a very good day for me. :Bounce

I`ve seen CALVMX do so called races more like exhibitions at the fair ..........oval track with jumps and such............still boring but i "like" the bikes......and the smell of 2-stroke under the tent
Yeah, I heard about the one calvmx had there last year, but they advertised it as a TT race, so I had no interest in it because I don't want to ride TT anyone cuz it's too dangerous for me now, but I rode it a few times before at the old Elsinore night TT track and Perris night TT when I was a lot younger and a lot more competent.
I just looked up the one they had last year and they all had motocross bikes and motocross tires, so yeah, I could, and might ride that if nothing else is going on but the track looks really lame and really slow, so it would be boring, but if I do race it, I might do it on my YZ100. It actually might get around that track faster than the bigger bikes, but I would have to re-learn how to ride a small bike as they are a lot of work, lol.

Yet another installment of a barnett468 race report at the OTHG National this weekend.
I had 2 motos a day on Saturday and Sunday. The combined score from all 4 motos determined the results. I finished 2nd in my class which had 11 guys in it, and all of them were riding newer 4 stroke MX bikes and most were friggen 450's. :Bounce
I holeshot both motos on Saturday over 15 other guys :lock:
Below are a couple photos from today, and the photographer is sending me a couple other pretty cool ones, and one of those shows me nearly holeshoting 1 of the 4 races, so fluck them new whazoo $10,000.00 race bikes. Just for comparison, I'm lucky if my bike puts out 36 hp and it weighs around 218 lbs without gas. A new KTM 125 2 stroke puts out a whopping 37 hp and only weighs 197 lbs. A new KX450 puts out over 59 hp at 11,000 rpm and all the other new 4 stroke bikes still put out over 54.
I passed several people in this turn when I raced here 2 weeks ago, so I figured I might be able to get a few here this time also, unfortunately, this weekend the entire inside of the turn had deep ruts, so most everyone took the far outside line and railed the berm, HOWEVER, there was around 3 feet of flat ground on the inside of the berm that one could ride if they have brass balls, so that's exactly what I did in this turn and had just passed #685 on the blue bike and was then trying to pass 805 on the orange bike also.
https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/MU4AAOSwYXVcoXSw/s-l1600.jpg
This photo is 1 second later, and you can see that my speed caused me to drift to the outside of the turn and into the base of the berm, and #805 nearly ran off the track....but I never touched him cuz I am a kind and courteous racer.

This was taken with a telephoto lens so the two peaks of the jump look fairly close together, but it as a double jump with around 16 feet between the peaks, and is the one that sent a guy to the hospital 2 weeks ago and he just got out yesterday. It is the most dangers jump and most dangerous section of the track because you have to hit it doing around 45 mph to clear it, and as soon as you land, you have to slam on the brakes to lock up both wheels to loose enough speed to make the 90 degree right hand turn just after it. If you go really slow you can easily roll, over both of them but you will loose a lot of time doing that. If you misjudge your speed, and go just a little too slow, you will nose dive into the face of the second jump, in which case you will have a very bad day. If you go at the right speed but don't slam on your brakes as soon as you land, you will fly over the berm in the turn like the guy did 2 weeks ago, in which case, you will have a very bad day.
My 38 year old suspension is not designed to take this type of abuse, so nearly every time I landed on the second peak, my bike would rebound so hard it would literally bounce back up in the air maybe a foot, which would knock my feet off the pegs by a few inches, so I then had to wait until my bike landed the second time before I could slam on the brakes and hope the 38 year old drums would slow me down in time.

When are you going to start racing your YZ490? Thanks for sharing! Any video of your race?
Both my biggest bore bikes are actually YZ465'S, but I also have a 1978 YZ400. The YZ490 is too new for the class I race in, plus, from everything I have read about therm, they are apparently a big pos. The 1980 YZ465 was declared big bore bike of the year by the magazines, although a big bore Maico certainly wasn't a pile, and as John Neary mentioned on 3ww, magazines have in fact intentionally posted inaccurate info pertaining to their bike tests and comparison shootouts etc, however, in this case, with the possible exception of the Maico, the 1980 YZ465 was in fact the best box stock bike you could buy for the big bore class, and they sold like hotcakes, and on top of that, the 1981 YZ465 was even better in numerous ways, and was really the pinnacle of all big bore bikes up to that time, which is why I am going to race that one instead of the 1980. The 81, had more bottom end and a smoother power band than the 80, plus it had better suspension and a much steeper steering head angle so it would actually turn (almost like a Maico) without having to drop the fork tubes 2" in the tripple trees like I had to do to my 1980 YZ250 just to get it to almost turn.
Interestingly enough, the bike that Marty Moates holeshot both motos with and won on in the 1980 Carlsbad World Championship GP had a stock 465 engine that his sponsor LOP Racing highly modified with a custom cylinder and stroker crank to make it a 490, but they didn't tell anyone this at the time. The reason they didn't tell anyone may have been that Yamaha might have asked them not to, because Yamaha wanted people to believe that it was just a 465cc engine so they could ride the wave of Moates win and sell more 465's, which they manufactured in 1980 and 1981, but that is just a guess. Unfortunately, when Yamaha decided to make a 490 for 1982, they must have lost LOP's phone number cuz the one Yamaha made is not nearly as good as the one LOP made.
I was at the 1980 race watching from a section called the ledge, and I was only 5 feet from the edge of the track so I had a killer view.
Here is Marty at that race GP. You can see both of his starts at the 20 second and 2:15 marks in the video.

Here's some more info on Marty, and that race.
https://racerxonline.com/2017/09/12/450-words-marty-moates-and-carlsbad
Marty also started a company called "NO FEAR" which sold Motocross apparel, and the 465 I am going to ride has one of his NO FEAR decals on the rear fender.

Holy mother of God...what have I done? I have awoken the best from its long and peaceful slumber, and am now trying to figure out how to put it back to sleep.
I got my YZ465 together today then turned the gas on, pulled the choke on, and activated my handy and dandy new fangled compression release, then coasted down our long steep driveway until I had some decent speed, then jammed it into second gear and it turned over once, after which my brand new $140.00 Hoosier rear tie just started skidding like it was on ice, so I coasted to the bottom of the driveway then coasted downhill on our steep street and jammed it into second gear again, and it did the same exact thing. I then pushed it back up our steep street and decided to try the starting fluid I use to start my YZ250 when its engine is cold. I also decided to try just kick starting it, so after around 8 kicks, it ran for a second. I then put more starting fluid in it, and after 8 more kicks, it violently roared to life.
Well, I can now tell you from first hand experience that a TECATE engine feels as smooth silk compared to this monster. It vibrates more than a Magic Fingers bed plugged into 220 volts. I let it run for a few minutes then slowly went down and up our road just to check the trans. After a few more minutes, I went down the road slowly then gave it a bit of throttle coming back up to clean it out. I then made one more trip down the road then opened it up around 3/4 of the way coming back up the hill and the tire spun some when I hit the throttle, and when I shifted into second it literally roasted the tire until I hit fourth, at which point it roasted the tire some more until I let off the throttle.
:w00t:
Anyway, the good news is that the compression release works fairly well although it still has a lot of compression even when the compression release is activated, and it would literally be nearly impossible to start it without it, which is obviously why these bikes break kick starter shafts, and wear the clutch cover out or simply break the clutch cover. The bad news is that it runs, so now I have to attempt to ride it.

No, I just left the trans and kept my fingers crossed that it would keep working, and luckily, it worked just as bad as it had been since I bought it, so I'm just going to leave it alone for now and hope it makes it thru the summer season. These trannies are notorious for shifting badly, and I literally have to roll the throttle all the way off then pull the clutch in between shifts on the starts or it will absolutely refuse to shift, so you can imagine how fast it is having to do that and still getting hole shots. When I eventually take it apart, I will probably have the trans rem finished then coated with Tungsten Disulfide to see if I can get it to shift better. Might get some ceramic crank bearings also, but that's about it for the fancy stuff.
One of the things that is absolutely spectacular on tis bike is the stock clutch. It was used when I bought the bike and I have to slip the crap out of it when exiting every single corner and after landing off most of the jumps and it still works flawlessly.
Thanks for the gear suggestion. I plan to start it again tomorrow so if I have to push it, I will definitely try 3rd. Haven't had to do that since around 1974, lol.

Chasing what I thought was a coil/ spark issue on the oc3. It turned out to be a radiator leak that was soaking the coil with fan blow by. I’m a bit surprised the coil is so sensitive to moisture.

Did a lot of tuning today to our two 90's, Two 110's and one 70. Did a bunch of carb and ignition tuning. Was able to dial in our built 110 24mm mikuni by running a 30 pilot and a 110 main. Both 90's now start on half a pull. The 70 now starts a bit easier after doing some points adjusting.
Was able to ride and tune on them all. I like those types of days when you can do little things to multiple trikes and make improvements in them all. A good day for sure.

I'm not sure there is a "basic" tuning tutorial. A lot of trial and error but nothing basic about it. We just keep things systematic when tuning. We try to only do one thing at a time. Timing, carb, cams, exhaust. Today we switched out a slide needle but only before trying every slot on the needle clip with the needle prior to that. For us it's pretty much a lot of errors.
We worked a lot on a VM 22 mikuni today on one of our 90's. We are pretty confident that we have narrowed it down to to much fuel to the amount of air we are taking in. We are now down to main jet tuning only, but beings I ran out of the sizes that we need that will need to wait for another day.

Well today it was another race and another 1st place on my 250, but the best part is that I also took my 1981 YZ465 with me to try and get a few low speed laps in just to see if anything was going to fall off or was in major need of changing like the suspension settings or carb jetting etc, so I ran it in my very last race. The biggest size bike I ever raced before was my 1978 YZ400, which was back in 1978 (and is the same bike I broke my leg on) and my 1974 Maico 400 GP that I raced in the vintage class in 1993, so being 25 years older than I was the last time I raced any bike, especially a big bore 2 stroke, I was a bit apprehensive about it.
I was on the second gate with several other guys in my last race and I let them all go when the gate dropped, I then waited 5 or 6 seconds then took off. I went around the first lap at around 40% effort as a safety precaution, then when nothing fell off and it didn't bottom out on anything, I sped up just a little more for the third lap and a little bit more for the fourth lap, at which point I as going at around 60% effort, at which point I saw that I was closing in on someone, so I thought there must be a problem with his bike cuz nobody is that slow, especially on a new 4 stroke Kawasaki 450, so just for fun I sped up to around 75% effort and I actually reeled him in, at which point he noticed I was right behind him so he sped up.
I was around 3 feet behind him heading into the next turn, so I said fk it, I'm gonna see if my pig of a bike (around 235 lbs) will turn if I run it into the inside of him hard by taking the middle of the turn, cuz I saw he was going to take the outside, and to my utter amazement, it did turn, so going over the jump that immediately followed the turn, I took the center and he took the right, and the front of my front tire was even with the back of his rear going over the jump, so I said fk it again, lets see what happens if I nail this thing down the long straight after the jump. So I nailed mine and he nailed his at the same time and we drag raced down the straight, and I pulled up almost even with him gong into the next turn, so I rammed it into the middle of the turn again (hoping once again that it might actually at least try to turn), and he took the outside, and I passed him in the friggen turn, then I intentionally drifted in front of him to prevent him from passing me going into the next turn which he would have had the better line for at that point. After that I kept up the 75% effort and pulled away from him.
So to sum it up, the 1981 YZ465 is everything they said it was when they did the new bike reviews on it back in 1981 after declaring the 1980 YZ465 bike of the year the year before, and this one is even better, and I can ride it without any problem (at least at 75% effort), but the real tests will be the next 2 weekends when I will be racing against other vintage bikes, so I will see what happens then.

So.... 1981 YZ465 fastest, most powerful bike in the universe?
Well actually, the 81 YZ465 was the first big bore bike Motorcyclists Magazine tested in 81, so they did say that they couldn't say how it compared to any others at the time they tested it, and could only say that it was better than the 80 model. Other good big bore bikes in 81 were the 495 KTM and 490 Mega 2 Maico, but both of those are pretty rare and way more expensive than mine, so I'm not worried about one of those showing up and having to compete against it. It's possible that I may not go any faster on the 465 than I am on my 250 now so I will see what happens over he next couple months.

Hey Barns congrats on another Win. Barns what do you think is contributing to your win's at this stage in your life? Do you think it's your age, making you a smarter or wiser rider? Experience? Or is it a equipment deal, having bikes that are better than your competition? and if it is the better equipment do you think that your ability to put more thought and money into your Bikes (because of your age) put's you above some of the other's that don't have the time or resourses to do the same?
A buddy of mine Roger that is in his mid 60's races flat tracks. Roger builds and races one of the fastest Champion frame 750 around. I would contribute his sucsses to having the ability, means and know how to build bikes such as this, but with that being said some of his competition is probably at his same level as far as equipment because he also builds some of their motors. So does skill as a rider come into play at that point?

Hey Barns congrats on another Win.
Thanks, but it's not really a huge achievement cuz it's not in the expert/pro class. I'm just happy to be able to ride at this point irregardless of where I finish, but even when I was in the pro class in the 70's and on 3 wheelers in the mid 80's, I was still happy just to be riding and never got pissed off if I didn't do well because I never took it all that seriously, so I never even practiced or really worked out between races etc, however, I did drink a lot during the week back then so maybe that helped.
Barns what do you think is contributing to your win's at this stage in your life?
Not riding in the expert/pro class.
Actually, the short answer to your question is, I truly have absolutely no idea, and am shocked and surprised by it myself, and am shocked and surprised that I can even still ride a dirt bike due to a few different reasons, but I'll still try to answer your questions.
Last month at a big vintage race they put the 250 novices, 250 intermediates, and 250 experts in the same race on the same gate to save time and in the first moto I got a first or second place start and was in second the entire race and was pulling away from everyone behind me. I think there were 4 experts 4 or 5 intermediates and the rest novices in that race. I think I finished around third overall in the second moto. I just happened to ride better that day than I previous had been so I definitely don't expect that to happen again any time soon, and I actually don't want to go that fast at my age even if I was able to do so on a regular basis because I don't want to get hurt if I can help it, and falling off at those speeds would be very unpleasant.
Do you think it's your age, making you a smarter or wiser rider? Experience?
In regards to racing motocross, after a person has physically matured enough like maybe age 16 - 18 etc, they only have so many years they can perform at a high level, which is maybe 10 years, after which, most people start to loose their desire, and endurance, and strength, and their reaction time slows etc. In general, the more one races, the smarter and better one gets at it irregardless of their age but the there are limits to peoples ability based on their age etc. Also, even though I used to race in the pro class, there are many others in the vintage races that did as well, so in that regard, I don't have any real advantage, plus, everyone there is easily twice as strong as I am which gives them a good size advantage over me.
Or is it a equipment deal, having bikes that are better than your competition?
One can go faster on better equipment to some degree, but in my case, in the vintage races there are bikes I race against that are a little better than mine, and on most of the tracks, I am actually at a slight disadvantage against many bikes in my class because they have significantly have more bottom end power than mine does which is better for the way the tracks are designed. My bike is far better suited to a big track with high speed straights and wider turns, and it is definitely one of the best bikes on that type of track.
As far as a drag race goes, I probably have the fastest 250 compared to the others I race against, so this helps me get decent starts. I learned a very long time ago that it is far easier to start in front and work my way back then it is to start in the back and work my way forward, and because of this, I practiced starts a lot, and fortunately, when I raced in the pro mx and pro 3 wheeler classes I was an exceptional starter, and was rarely outside the top 4 or 5 going into the first turn, and got many holeshots. In fact, when I raced in the expert class in vintage racing, I holeshot around 90% of my races, and 3 of my classes were open to all age groups, and I definitely couldn't have had the fastest 125, 250, and open class bikes then, but they certainly were not slow by any means either. Also, as far as getting good starts goes, it also helps to hold the throttle on just a little bit longer than others when going into the first turn, which is one of the things I have always tried to do whenever possible, but this takes some brass balls.
if it is the better equipment do you think that your ability to put more thought and money into your Bikes (because of your age) put's you above some of the other's that don't have the time or resourses to do the same?
I can't explain how funny this question is, and you would have to go to one of these races to really understand it, but in my class, I am on the very bottom of the totem pole as far as having big dollars invested in my bike. Most of these guys have pristine, fully restored bikes with every fancy high perf item they can get, including race tech gold valves in the forks and rear shock or complete race tech rear shocks which cost maybe a couple grand, lol. The one thing I wanted to do when I started racing again, is have a bike that was period correct in every single way, because to me, it's not really a true vintage bike if it has things on it like race tech suspension parts or the new style reed valves etc, and my bike is in fact period correct in every single way, which puts me at a disadvantage, but I couldn't care less about that. If you saw my bike in person, you might even think it looked like it was just pulled out of a barn after being rode hard and put away wet back in the 80's. At the last vintage race, my friend even told me that my bike looked like it needed a lot of work, and that was the race I beat all but one of the other 250 experts at.
Skill will always trump superior equipment providing there is not a massive disparity between the equipment. For example, a pro level bike will not instantly make a novice level rider an intermediate level rider or drop their lap times at all.
I raced TT on a motorcycle a few times and short track on a 3 wheeler a few times, so I can say from my experience that it is a bazillion times less physically demanding than racing motocross, which has been said to be one of the most physically demanding sports in the world. This is not to suggest that riding a 750 on a flat track is not physically demanding or easy, and it certainly isn't, because that is a monster of a bike, and it is far easier to ride a bultaco astro.

Well, another day, another race, and another 1st place, but this time it was in the open class on my YZ465.
My first race was on my 250, and when I went to line up, everyone had a nice clean spot under their bike where the concrete had been swept, but the only space left on the line had a pile of wet mud and there was not a broom in sight, so I said fk it, I'll just play catch up after the start.
Well the gate dropped, and as expected, everyone left except for me cuz my rear tire was spinning on the muddy concrete, so I just patiently let it spin until it finally hooked up around 10 friggen feet past the gate, then I friggen nailed it, and fortunately I still caught up to the pack and past around 7 of them before the first turn. I then followed the guys in front of me staying right on the rear tire of the guy immediately in front of me for the first lap without trying to pass him because they had all ridden the track before and I hadn't, so I wanted to practice for a lap before I rode any faster. After the first lap, I picked up my speed and set the guy up in front of me for a pass, and I went into a slow right hander and my engine locked up as I was leaning over in the apex of the turn, so it threw me on the ground and the crash also broke my brand new friggen brake lever.
Oh well, one bike down but I still had one bike left, so I at least still got to ride some, and my 465 is the one I needed to ride anyway so I could get used to it and see if it needed any suspension changes, which it definitely does. The rear shock has so much compression damping if feels like it has straight 50w engine oil in it, and this was still after I back the damping knob out 7 more clicks, which is near the end of the 24 position adjustment. The steering angle is also so steep that it pushed the tire badly in every turn causing me to crash twice, plus the stiff rear forces the front down in the braking bumps which causes a severe, nearly bar swapping head shake, oh my what fun. So needless to say, both I and the 465 have a ways to go before I can ride it half way decently, but the first thing I may do is lower the forks in the tubes. I may have to send the rear shock out to have the compression damping reduced as well, but I have a few clicks left on the adjuster, so I will reduce the damping all the way and try it again next weekend at the regular vintage races I go to.
As far as the track went, it was friggen dg/sand, and they kept watering it even during the races, so some of the turns were really slippery. This is probably one of the last times I will ever ride there because it is hard on my bikes and I don't need to learn how to ride sand tracks, but at least I got some more jetting done on the 465 which was helpful.

No trophy pic or video this time Barn? :wondering
The "Trophy" is just another boring chunk of aluminum plate similar to most of the others, and I don't want to bore people to death by continuing to post photos of the same thing over and over again. As far as a video goes, nobody was taking any, however, there is supposed to be a video guy at the race this coming weekend who will supposedly take videos of people if they ask him to, so I will do that, and if he is able to take one, I will post it for everyone's entertainment, as I'm quite sure it will be amusing to watch me attempt to stay on my bike, especially if it is a video of me on my 465, which I am actually much slower on than my 250, but if the track is muddy, I may not ride the 465 as it really is far too dangerous, and they just love to friggen over water these tracks here and I hate that. Give me a bone dry, rock hard, blue groove track any day and I am happy.
Other than the radically steep steering head angle on the 465, which I can't do much about unless I reduce the rear wheel travel by having a spacer installed on the rear shock shaft which I may end up doing, the biggest problem is the horridly high compression damping in the rear shock. It causes the rear to kick up extremely badly (Yamahop as it was often referred to back in the day), especially over braking bumps, which often develop just before several corners on a track after a few races. On the 465, these bumps force me to go way slower than just about everyone when approaching a turn, so I am getting passed going into turns on it, and the problem with that is, I am best on the straights and over the braking bumps going into turns if the bike handles well, and this is the main area I make up time on most other riders.
Lowering the rear with a spacer on the shock shaft would reduce front end push in the turns and bar swap over the braking bumps, and it would also lower its center of gravity, plus it would make it easier for me to touch the ground on it, so it would improve it in a few areas. Obviously it would loose some rear wheel travel, which will be around 1", but it may be a good trade off because there aren't any huge jumps on any of these tracks, so I think I can afford to give up a little rear wheel travel to improve the steering and reduce the handle bar swap.
Below are a couple photos from the National I won my class in a few weeks ago.
This is heading into the first turn at the end of the start straight. I came out of the turn in 3rd out of 13 people in that moto. The oldest bike in this race was a 2000 Honda CR250 2 stroke. There was one other 2 stroke and the rest were newer 4 strokes and mostly 450's. Even the 2000 Honda CR250 has way more hp than my bike does and he got the hole shot in this race. The Honda also weighs a whopping 13 lbs less than my bike with both bikes in stock form.
https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/fWgAAOSwmWNctJ82/s-l1600.jpg
This is one good example of how hard I have to ride my 250 to try and keep up with the newer bikes.
https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/q44AAOSwk1hctJ7K/s-l1600.jpg
I thought the chart below might be interesting to some. It is a dyno test of a 1978 YZ250 that was done back in 78, but my engine isn't much different so it's a reasonable comparison. The 78 put out 32 hp (corrected hp) at the rear wheel, and my bike is no more than around 36 with the Boyesen ports added. The 2000 Honda CR250 made a monsterous 46 hp at the rear wheel during one magazines test in 2000.
The YZ only made a lame 12 hp over the first 5000 rpm, after which it made 30 hp more over a 2000 rpm range. This light switch type power "curve" (which is actually a sudden power spike) is very similar to that of a full blown race built 1974 CR125, and this is exactly why my bike is so hard to ride. The 2000 Honda is a water col;ed, power valve engine, and it has a much smoother power delivery and much more power to deliver than mine does.
.................................................. ..........http://pulpmx.com/app/uploads/2017/09/csteel124_13.png
Here is a dyno comparison of all of the top 2000 model 250 2 strokes which shows how ridiculously linear the power curves are on all of them. The Honda still made around 43 hp in this test, and all but one of them made over 20 hp at 5000 rpm where mine only makes around 12 , which is why they can easily out accelerate me when exiting most turns and go farther and faster over the jumps that are immediately after a turn, and is why I have to hang it all out on the straights and when entering the turns, which I can assure you is a little hairy to do (at least for me at my age) on any bike, especially on a 38 year old one.

Part of my week was building these two little league dugout roofs for my town. This field is used for the younger players and all along I figured they were to keep them dry when it rained. I finished up today and while I spoke to the coaches they said it’s not to keep them dry really but to keep the kids from getting hit by fly balls. I guess the kids aren’t old enough to get out of the way (happens a lot) they said.
Easy job but the post holes were dug by someone else and most were in the wrong spot!

Thank you for the info. Shipping would KILL me in Canada. I got $300 into this plus my time. All fixed up and back on the road again. It was a PITA as far as parts. That is what held me up. And this is one way to straighten a swingarm. This is off my 1980 YZ465 that I am now racing, and I noticed a while back that the rear wheel was crooked, so today I finally got around to removing the arm and checking it to see if it was bent, which I used our kitchen countertop for. The side arms measured around 3/16" out of parallel, which is a fair amount, so I took it to a local fabrication shop that I have do some welding for me and had the fabricator snugly trap the front of it in their 60 ton metal brake, then he tried to bend it with a 3 foot long pry bar.
After the bar was deemed too short and flexy, I went to the nearby metal supply store and bought a 10 foot long piece of solid mild steel bar so we could put it through the axle holes and then pry on it. Unfortunately, the bar started bending, so I had him use his pry bar while I used the 10 foot bar and we eventually got the arms to within 1/32" of parallel to each other, which is about all we were going to get with the bars we had, so after I saw how much the arm flexed while we were trying to straighten it, I figured I would probably add some braces to the arm (made out of 6061 square tube) in the near future, so I decided that the arm was close enough for now and that we could probably make it perfect the next time with the same 2 bars plus by jacking up one arm with a floor jack.
Yamaha made the rear axle 3 mm larger on the 81 465, and after seeing how much the arm flexed while we were prying on it, my guess is that they increased the axle size mainly to reduce swingarm flex instead of axle flex since both the 80 and 81 use the same arm with the exception of the bigger axle slot in the 81 arm to accept the bigger axle.
If I do reinforce the arm, which is most likely, it will then be around as rigid as the swingarm on a 1986 TECATE...The Most Powerful 3 Wheeler In The Universe! and would then be nearly impossible to bend.

Took in this nice little 110 on a trade for a bit of labor on a 200. All stock, great seat and pan, rubber still in the chain guard, OEM exhaust.
Pulled the carb after getting the stuck slide out, pretty varnished up but I want to keep it so after I pick up a used pan because my lovely wife busted me trying to use hers I'll boil it and stick in a kit. Checked for spark that's all good. Tank needs a little cleaning but it's in great shape, no holes or dents.
I think this one will be a keeper for the grandkids. I have a original 74 70 I was going to trade with but at this point I think I'll just sell the 70 out right.

Today I spent a couple hours on my 1974 Kawi 90 G3SS-D determining for certain why it smoked so much and ran like crap. After I first got it running, it wouldn't idle and had a flat spot/hesitation right off the bottom, so I cleaned out the restricted pilot jet and it ran perfectly but smoked a lot. The previous owner was running premix in it even though it had 2 stroke oil in the reservoir, so I tested the oil pump and found it was working so I put straight gas in it and tightened a loose injector fitting and checked the gearbox oil level and it was very low, so I filled it up then drove it.
The thing smoked a bazillion times more AND would miss excessively above 1/2 throttle, so I plugged the injector and ran premix at 40:1 and it did the same thing, so my next plan was to drain the gearbox oil and run it for a few minutes to determine if it was sucking oil from there, and sure enough, after I drained, it today, it hauled ass and ran flawlessly. I then removed the clutch cover planning to replace the right crank seal and the clutch that was slipping a little and noticed that the 0 ring that goes between the injector fitting on the rotary valve cover and the clutch cover was missing, so this is definitely one place it was sucking oil from because the clutch hurls oil at this connection like Niagra Falls.
I also needed to replace the kick starter shaft because it was broken when I bought it but it came with replacement parts, and when I pulled the cover off, I saw that the kick starter gear was inside the friggen engine case, so I took it all apart and will split the cases in a day or so and fix it.
Here's a photo of one of these for those that are curious as to what they look like. Mine is the same color and year as this one and they only have a 4 speed trans but will rev to around 9,000 rpm and will do over 65 mph. You can also wheelie with not much effort.

God dang that photo brings back memories. One of the first bikes I ever modified. Armed with nothing more than the tool kit that came with my YZ 80 (made of high grade Japanese margarine) and the ability to convince my buddy that his dad wouldn’t mind us disassembling the engine, after all, my subscription to Dirt Bike magazine made me a full fledged mechanic at the age of 14. We pulled the head and took it down with a flat trailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotrailprotr ailpro file, hogged out the carbon filled pipe with a hand drill and some sort of woodworking bit, dropped the needle and raised the float (I have no idea why).
It ran like a raped ape afterwards. He still brings it up every time I run into him.

Today I raced my 1981 YZ465 with a club I haven't race with before, I signed up for 2 classes (4 motos) to get some practice time in because I still don't have much time on this beast and still haven't figured out how the frick to ride it. Also made a gearing and fuel change a few days ago so I needed to test those.
My right arm and hand were worn out from all the gardening (yes, it was from gardening) I did, so I couldn't hold onto the bars as well as I needed to which wasn't a good thing when they tried to swap back and forth, which they did a few times, so I had to go thru a couple sections of the track much slower than I otherwise would have.
When the gate dropped for my first race my bike loaded up, so I just held it wide open up the start hill while watching everyone pass me by until it finally cleared out with around 50 feet to go before the first turn, so I help the sucker on longer than most others then railed the inside of the first turn and passed most of them somehow. I then passed a couple more in the next turn and entered the track in 2nd place where I stayed until one guy passed me near the end of the race because I wasn't trying to push it to hard, as I was still figuring out what it would do on this track, plus I still had 3 races left, so I happily cruised around in 3rd for the rest of the race.
For the 2nd moto of this race I did a couple starts first before hand to clear it out, and this time by the top of the start hill I was in about the same place I was in the first start, lol, so I held the throttle on a bit longer again and railed the inside again and entered the track in 2nd again, but this time I was more familiar with what the bike was going to do, so I nailed it on the uphill and passed the 1st place guy on the inside 2 turns later and led the rest of the race, and on the last 4 laps I even sped it up a little and pulled out a full straight lead ahead of the 2nd place guy, who won the first race and who also won the last race this club held a month ago, all on his fancy, late model, $10,000.00 450 4 stroke, so I was happy and amused about that and got 2nd overall out of 9 guys, which was far better than I thought I might get. :Bounce
I have some video of this moto but need to have the computer nerds show me how to edit it so I can post it.
Next week is FINALLY another vintage race at Perris Raceway which is very close to where I live now, so after that I will finally know exactly where I am at as far as being able to ride this unruly monster against similar bikes, but unfortunately, there is one section of that track that I have to go a little slow thru because it causes severe bar swap in this beast, which actually knocked my hand off the bars at around 55 mph when I rode there 2 weeks ago, and that was....unpleasant.

Someone’s been a busy beaver. Sometimes going against the grain is the key to sprucing things up. I’d leaf it just like that and just add a ring for each year I rode the bike.
I bet there’s a few guys out there with woodies wagons pining for something like that.

Great story. Not many people around that even know what that bike is. Leave it to kawasaki to put a bike engine in am ill handling frame. Seems to be what they were best at for quite some time.
I rode those and a lot of the other small bikes in the parking lot of norm reeves honda when i worked there and also in the parking lot of the boat dealership across the street when they after they closed for the day. We also occasionally had races on z50's on the boat dealerships slick concrete pad which was hilarious.

Nice crawler loader! The skid loader kinda phased them out in the construction industry, but they are great for log dragging, digging(once you get use to how to run it,) amongst other things. Start checking equipment scrap yards to find you a combo bucket, or a nice rock tooth loader bucket as it would probably be easier to find. Nice toy.

Been debating whether to pull the trigger on the new Honda Goldwing or not. There's so much cool to it and simultaneously so much wrong with it..........in that what Honda did by creating the long range touring genre.....honda seems to be destroying their touring flagship. The seat seems horrible compared to my electra glide and storage for "touring" is gone....at least for 2 up. Wind protection doesn't seem as good as my old GL1200.

I've also been contemplating Yamahas new flagship. I already own a v-twin but damn if it's not everything a long range tourer should be........and more features than any HD CVO at half the cost. I

Parks Creek. Myself and a few others you might know (Barry for one) made most of those trails. Originally there was just one straight trail running parallel with the tracks. I think I was already riding on pavement when Birch was riding and we hardly ever went further south than WSP School.

You will need a lot of luck finding someone in Mordoor that can properly install them for you. I went thru 3 sets on my 1970 TA Challenger before I found someone that could install them correctly. I had the last set installed in the parking lot of the hotel I was staying at in Scottsdale before I took the car over to the Barrett Jackson auction, and the guy used a propane torch to aid in installing them on my brand new high end paint job, and it worked. He then poked any bubbles with a fine point poker, and even though the decals were not flawlessly smooth after he finished, they were 2 days later after being baked in the sun.
Phoenix graphix was out of the stripes at the time because I used up their inventory of them so they made me a set the same day I called them and I drove over in the afternoon and picked them up.
I posted the contact info on your cars build thread for a guy I know in Washington that can install the decals or who can refer you to someone that can do it correctly if you don't know anyone.

Hipsters ride rat/chop/Bob/cafe bikes. They don't tour a damn thing. They ride between bars taking selfies and if they do ride long distance, there are chase trucks and a professional videographer in tow.... For Instagram purposes

Well the Quadractor is back home
I bought this maybe 10 years ago. I did a lot of work on it, sourced a parts machine and factory plow and 3 pt hitch. I never had the need for its primary use as a skidder. It was a tractor show novelty. 4wd, 4 wheel steer, weight is only about 500lb, 72:1 reduction, can skid 4000lb with 8 hp Briggs. Sold it and then bought the land/cabin. I began to miss it and occasionally checked CL. Well it popped up, clearly lost some of its luster but all there including parts.
Time to bring it back to its glory

Me and my wife went to Deus Ex Machina in Venice CA a couple of weeks back. Total hipster mecca. I bought a hat...I kinda like it. Me and my wife were walking around and I knew what all the hipsters were thinking..."are you old geezers lost?" haha!...."the Harley dealer is down the street". Nice place. I was there about 3 years before when someone I knew had his bozosuka CM400 there. Funny thing the Bultaco Alpina and CB450 they had on display were things I learned on and use to have (bultaco). I guess that makes me hipster.
But here's the deal.....the millennials are getting out. Any given weekend the desert is filled with Tacomas all adventured out...and they are using them. But for the life of me and all the faithful geezers who purchase goldwings ....we can't figure out why the change.

My 85 Low Rider is on it's second belt and the bike has roughly 200,000 miles on it. Upgraded the cam at 25,000, did a complete rebuild at about 150K, not because it needed it just because I wanted to add a newer cam, shaved the heads, port and polish) The first belt had a hole punched in it from a small rock that got caught up between the pulley and the belt. I was in the process of starting to do a burnout when it broke :naughty::wondering:lol::Bounce IIRC that was around 60,000 miles.
They are a PITA to swap out, you'll have to completely disassemble the primary and it's components, remove the inner primary and the swingarm. The upside is at that time you can check out all those other parts for wear and tear and replace other critical parts that may need it: swing arm bearings, cleve blocks, belt sprockets, primary chain. One other problem is that the swing arm pivot bolt can become seized in the transmission housing, so at the minimum it wouldn't hurt to loosen the swing arm bolt and make sure it's not seized when you do your PMS (Preventative Maintainence Inspection). I'll be checking the wifes '98 Road King swing arm pivot bolt in the next couple of weekends.
ETA: I should say they CAN be a PITA to swap out. I can have the primary assembly completely off of one of our bikes in about an hour and a half, and that's diddleputzing around while I do it.;)
I would just inspect the belt and pulleys a couple times a year.
At 85,000 I would think your bike is far from "tired", especially if you don't hammer on it all the time. Harley's are far more durable than some would have you believe. If your bike is stock then I think you've just gotten used to the factory horsepower and you may need a little upgrade in the cam department:naughty:
I would check your compression and compare it to the HD specs, that will tell you alot right there.
Have you replaced the crappy factory chain tensioners? It was more of an issue with the early TC motors, but at 85K it wouldn't hurt to crack open the cam chest and take a peek to see how they are wearing. If those shoes go, you'll be looking at redoing the whole motor like one of the guys I work with, cost him somewhere between 4-5K.
We are going to be upgrading my brothers '04 Electraglide with this as long as the crankshaft runout is in spec:

Was talking to a guy that said his buddy had almost 200K on his sporty....I thought he was pulling my leg. I never bothered to ask about the belt but I recently talked to a guy with 130K + on his 103 that's on the original belt and motor.
I've already had the pleasure of doing a compensator, stator, rectifier and starter, etc.. I grinded the edge down on the primary housing for ease of removal of the rotor for the next time. After our San Francisco trip I'm going to inspect the cam chain tensioner, etc.

Here's another boring barnett468 race report for anyone that gives a flyin flock.
Another race and another 1st place against other vintage bikes this time, however, this time it was in a higher skill level class because I moved myself up one class yesterday and it was my first true vintage race on my YZ465.
I had an unusual experience at the track to start the day off. There was a famous motorcycle racing photographer named Tom Corley there whom goes to a lot of this clubs races and photographs people. He has also been photographing races and writing articles about motorcycle races since at least 1975, and I even bought many photos from during the 70's that he had taken of me. A few minutes after I unloaded my bike, he came over and asked me if he could get a photo of me with the my bike, which surprised the heck out of me because my bike has a hole melted in the side cover with melted duct tape covering part of it, and a piece of the vinyl is missing from the seat so the foam can easily be seen, and the word GERITOL on the tank in big heavily worn letters etc, so it's not like he wanted the photo to show off how nice it my bike was, nor did he recognize me from the 70's, nor am I anyone special like Bob Hannah or Marty Smith etc.
After he took some photos of my roachy looking bike with me wearing a ragged sweatshirt that Goodwill probably wouldn't even take, he asked me if he could interview me for an article in his magazine, to which I said yes but was a little hesitant about it because I had no idea what he wanted to ask me or why in the world he wanted to interview me as opposed to anyone else there, including ex AMA Pro rider Scott Burnwurth who was parked no more than 50 feet away from me. Anyway, if he puts the interview in his race report which comes out in around 2 weeks, and it doesn't make me look like the ragmuffin of vintage racing, I may post it for peoples amusement.
As far as the racing went, I entered 3 races for a total of 6 motos, unfortunately, due to various issues like them dropping the gate in one race before I was even there, and my new compression release popping out on the starting line 10 seconds before they dropped the gate in another race, and crashing while running 2nd in front of all the experts in another race, and my glasses being fogged up for half the track for most of the races so I could't go as fast as I wanted the entire time, 2 of the races were complete throw aways as far as overall finishes go, however, had I not had any of the other issues except for the fogging glasses, I luckily would have won the overall in the other 2 races as well, so from that viewpoint, it was a pretty good day.
In the races I actually ran and started on time in, my bike wheelied so high every time I hit 4th gear on the start that I had to shut the throttle off completely until the wheel came back down, at which point the bike slowed just enough to be bogging some when I hit the gas again, so I had to pull the clutch in and peg the throttle, then slip the clutch until it wasn't bogging anymore, and even though I had this issue, I still got killer starts including one second place start and a holeshot, and both of these were the 2 motos the experts were in, so the bike definitely runs well now but I'm still not done trying to get just a little more hp out of it.
In the race I won the overall in, I beat the reigning champion of that class whom wins most of the races he is in, however, I don't think he is quite the fastest person in that class from what I can tell, but the guys that I think might be a little faster rarely go to any of the local vintage races, so it looks like I should do well in that class which I definitely didn't expect, at least not quite so soon anyway after not even being on a bike in 27 years.
All in all, even with the minor incidents that occurred, I still had a blast and am happy that the beast didn't do anything unexpected and throw me on the ground hard.
I know I put a tear off on here...but maybe that was last week. :wondering

That is the reigning 60+ open class expert champion behind me. I held him off for 4 laps which I thought was pretty good. Had I not tipped over in a turn half way thru the first moto for this particular race while I was in 2nd place, I think I would have beaten him, because I was easily keeping up with the 1st place guy and he ran away from everyone in both motos. :Bounce

Thanks, and I like that you like to like my race reports even BEFORE you read them.
Actually, I feel a little strange posting this stuff, but after some positive comments about the first one, I figured I might keep posting them until people get sick of them, which may be pretty soon now, however, I was also told by several people on this site a while back that doubted what I had posted at that time, that if there isn't any photos, it can't be true, so here they are. :)
I do not do any machine work now, I use 2 local retired machinists that have machines in their garages. I just do the drawings for them so all they have to do is follow the drawing. As far as being a real machinist, I definitely am not. I can do rudimentary things on a lathe and a mill etc, but nothing complicated. In addition to the other things I did at Kawi, I was one of two primary fabricators, so I can use a lot of various machines and fabricating tools etc, plus I can do some mold making, but I left the complicated machining processes to the in house machinists.

You should post this on the regular forum.
What sealer, if any, do you usually use on clutch covers etc?
If it's like a clutch cover that's leaking, it could be warped slightly, but you can check that by taping some 400 grit sand paper to a window pane (if you don't have granite counter tops) then clean the gasket surface then color it with a felt pen then spray water on the sand paper and lightly rub the cover on it for a few seconds, then look to see where the felt pen mark was removed. If it is warped you can surface it the same way but with 180 - 220. You can also just put the cover on the window pane and try to slip a .002" feeler gauge under it at maybe 2" intervals.
Even if the cover is warped, it will not leak if you use Toyota FIPG if the sealing surface is perfectly clean. Yamabond #4 seems pretty similar and a lot of people use that as well but I just used it for the first time a week ago so I don't have enough experience with it to give any feedback on it other than you should put it on extremely thin when used on center cases, and still pretty thin when used on clutch covers and other gaskets etc.

Permatex ultra gray is also xlnt stuff and I use it by itself as an end seal on some V8 intake manifolds where it ends up being around 3/16" but the Toyota FIPG is better for motorcycle stuff.

Well, another race on my 1981 465 and another recycled beer can with the number 1 on it. :Bounce
This time I beat the points leader in one of my other classes who is at least the 2nd best rider in this class, and who is also 20 years younger than I am. This is the second race and second 1st place I received in the next higher skill level class that I moved up to last week, so to my surprise, I'm doing far better than I expected, especially in such a short time.
I entered 2 races for a total of 4 motos, but I didn't care much about the 1st race I entered and was just using it for practice, so I didn't push too hard in it, although I still ended up getting 2nd. The guy that won is the same guy I beat last week by passing him in a turn just before the finish line, but he has a modern bike with 32" of Cadillac like suspension, and was making time on me today by out jumping me by a fair amount on the 2 biggest jumps, and I had no desire to try to jump as far as he was.
In the race I put all my effort into, I was behind the leader for half the race in the first moto looking for a place in the track that I might be able to pass him, and found a turn where I could probably do it, so I stayed on his rear tire going into this turn, and took the outside which had a berm, and squared it off a little on the exit while he took the inside, and we were side by side exiting the turn, so I pinned it and out accelerated him on the straight and was ahead in the next turn, unfortunately, he got by me a few turns later and ended up winning by only round 10 feet.
After finishing the first moto, I thought I could beat him if I was ahead of him after the start, and if I pushed just a little bit harder from the very start of the race and didn't make any big mistakes, so after the gate dropped, I was 2nd going into the first turn and he was 3rd right behind me, so I simply went faster than I did during the first race against him and didn't make any mistakes, and ended up beating him by around 5 seconds, which was good for me since this is a higher skill level class and I am still trying to figure out how to ride the beast.
My 250 won't be fixed for at least another month at which point I will race them both, and after riding this pig, my 250 should feel like a 125.
This weekend I will be at another race but it will be against modern bikes this time.

Another barnett468 race report.
Today I went to another race and got another another piece of colored surfboard foam with the number 1 on it for my effort. :Bounce
I raced 2 classes with 2 motos each. These races were against all newer bikes and I had the only vintage bike there. One race was my regular class with this club and the other was against a younger age group that I race in just to get more practice. I ended up beating half the people in the younger class so I considered that decent.
4 MOTOS AND 4 HOLE SHOTS https://www.mustang.org.au/forum/Smileys/smilies/elefant.gif
I was fortunate enough to pull off 4 straight hole shots, but it got even better (and kind of amusing). There were 16 people on the gate in the race with the younger people that I was in, and after my first moto of that race, I walked over to the sign up booth where they post the results, and when I got there I was rudely confronted a person that was in my race who was whining about how I ride, and he claimed that I cut him off in the first turn and nearly ran into his front tire in the process. He then curtly told me to try and stay in my line better so it won't happen again.
During his little hissy fit I was laughing to myself cuz it was blatantly obvious to me that this clown didn't know how to ride in close quarters and was basically just unhappy that I got the hole shot on my ratty looking 38 year old bike instead of him on his fancy new $10,000 bike. After he stopped driveling on, I told him that I didn't drift off my line and that the line I took was exactly the line I wanted to take, and that I did not try to cut him off intentionally and couldn't have cut him off intentionally even if I wanted to because I couldn't see him because HE WAS BEHIND ME. https://www.mustang.org.au/forum/Smileys/smilies/hysterical.gif After this he simply turned around and skulked off. https://www.mustang.org.au/forum/Smileys/smilies/cry.gif
When I went to line up for the second moto of this race, the whiner was on the left side of the gate where I like to line up for this track, so I was going to line up right next to him on his right side but the concrete starting pad in that spot was full of dirt, so I asked someone to sweep it off for me because I couldn't turn my bike off, which someone did, I then pulled up right next to "missy", and the lil beatch looked at me then started shaking his head as if he thought it would bother me, so I then thought, this start may be fkng hilarious (for me at least).
When they got ready to drop the gate, I put the 465 in 3rd gear (as I had been doing all along) and nailed it when the gate dropped, and this clown was with me for around 50 feet and was 2" away from my bike trying to intimidate me and push me off to the right a little so he could have a decent line in the turn at the end of the straight, but I not only did not move over, after around 50 more feet I was well clear of him, so I drifted directly into his line so he couldn't possibly pass me on the inside in that turn, and after the second turn I had around a 20 foot lead over 2nd place (which was not him).
When I went to get my trophy after this race, my new friend was at the sign up booth again, but this time he just turned around and walked off without saying a word when he saw me.
Anyway, now for the race with my own age group. There is not much to tell other than I hole shot both motos and surprisingly pulled out a massive lead in both of them and led both of them wire to wire for the win. https://www.mustang.org.au/forum/Smileys/smilies/santa.gif

ANOTHER BRIEF BARNETT468 RACE REPORT FROM LAST SUNDAY
Raced 2 classes (4 motos) against newer bikes again using the second class to get more practice.
I pulled off 4 more hole shots, making it 9 hole shots in a row with this bike and 10 hole shots total with it, with 9 of them being against newer bikes, and all of them being with a heavily worn rear tire, so I'm quite happy with my starts and extremely amused that these guys with the newer bikes can't beat me to the first turn, and also that it pisses some of them off. Oh well, maybe they should just dump their fancy azz new bike and buy a 38 year old one if they want to have a chance of getting to the first turn around the same time I do...or maybe they should simply learn how to start.
As far as my regular class goes, I finished 2nd in both motos, however, when I went to get my trophy, they gave me one for 1st place and told me that the guy that got 1st lapped everyone except me, so they disqualified him and moved him up to the expert class for the next race.
They watered the track just before my second moto (which was a practice race for me) and on the first lap, my front wheel washed out in the whoop section even though I as going a little slower than before because of the wet track and my front end washed out and I slammed into the ground and my head hit it so friggen hard I was dizzy for a minute and I also smashed a few of my body parts, and my right shoulder is still purple from the crash. Since I got the hole shot, I also fell down in front of all FIFTEEN of the other riders, all of whom seemed to use my bike for traction cuz the seat had several tire marks on it and the rear frame section was bent more than an inch to one side.
I took the bike to my friends house a few days ago and we straightened it there with the help of one other person, so now it is not bent any more than it was when I bought it. I went to Perris Raceway to practice today, and with the exception of the heavily worn rear tire, the bike seemed fine and practice went very well. This is one of the two main tracks the big vintage club I race with uses, so I want to get as dialed in on it as I can so I can hopefully do decent there against the reigning open class expert. I was in front of him in one moto at the last race there for half the race and he wasn't gaining on me, but I crashed while I was in second place when I stupidly tried a different line in one corner to try and make up some time on the leader. I was in front of him again in the second moto but I was tired and therefore wasn't going quite as fast as I was in the first moto and he got by me but he didn't pull away from me very fast, so I think I can stay with him for a while at least now.
As far as the worn out tires go, I am going to send a brief tire test report to Hoosier as they requested, and if I'm lucky they will send me another set. :Bounce
Fourth of July in 4 more days. Hope everyone has a safe and fun one.

Sadly, the process of natural selection works too slowly in many cases, and unfortunately, it is frowned upon by most states for one to artificially speed up the process.

Well part of today I spent bolting on more hp to my hole shot king 1981 YZ465, cuz if a lot of hp (by 1980 standards) is good, then more must be even better.
My two main goals with this are, first, to get the first corner even faster than I currently am, and second, to increase the mid range power since it is difficult to increase the low end power. It currently has all the power on the top end that I really need even though these mods should give me even more.
The first mod is to install boyesen fiberglass dual stage reeds in place of the stock steel reeds. I did this on my 1980 YZ250 and it improved the the low end throttle response but I did not do a back to back test, however, I definitely did not notice any significant improvement in power, but these reeds seem to have a noticeable affect on a 465, which is documented by the dyno test results below.
The second mod is to install a 10 mm spacer between the reed cage and cylinder. These spacers have been falsely marketed as "torque" spacers for many years because more often than not, they actually reduce power in the majority of the bikes they are installed in because they increase the crankcase volume. They were originally designed to work specifically with the 1978 YZ400 because that engine had a rear boost port which was around 40% blocked by the reed stop. Installing the spacer on the 78' 400 engine increases the power because the boost port is no longer obstructed.
After checking out my cylinder with the reed cage installed a while back, I noticed that it blocked around the same amount of the boost port that it did on my 78 bike, soooo, my theory is that since it worked on a smaller cube engine with the same problem, it should (hopefully) work on a bigger cube one.
Also, when these particular reeds are installed on the 78 thru 81 big bore yammies, and the factory reed stop is removed as boyesen suggests, around 12 mm of the tip of the center reed will be hanging off into space with no support because of the boost port, and it will quickly break as some 465 guys have determined, lol.
Below is a back to back dyno test on a 1981 YZ465 with the only change between runs being the addition of the boysen fiberglass dual stage reeds. He did not say if he removed the reed cage stop as boyesen suggests, and did not know about the reeds partially blocking the rear boost port, nor was he aware there was a spacer designed to eliminate this problem.

No prob, and I have been at this for so long that I am immune to the "placebo" effect, so if it don't do crap, I won't think that it does. I should be testing it this Sunday on the same track I practiced on last week and several other times in the last 2 months, and I am very consistent there and have now memorized all my shift points and "flying" distances etc, so I will easily be able to tell if it does anything. I also need a new back tire, so if this spacer and reed setup helps, then with a new back tire I should easily be unbeatable to the first corner in the vintage class providing I don't wheelie at any point during the drag race to the first turn, and the Perris track is hard to pass on, so even if someone is slightly faster than me on the track (which several people currently are), it will be nearly impossible for them to pass me, but the super experts like Scott Burnwurth and a few others there should still be able to get around me....eventually.
I worked up to being an incredibly good starter when I raced back in the late 70's and was almost always in the top 20% going into the first turn and hole shot more races than I can remember, but after I sold my FMF works bike that they originally sponsored Gary Ogden on until he broke his shoulder, and bought my 78 yz400, I instantly started getting crappy starts, so I called Dave Miller of Miller Mano (now DMC) whom used to partially sponsor me on a CR125, and I told him what was going on. He then told me about the reed spacers and told me to install it and also told me to change my rear sprocket size by 2 teeth, both of which I did at the same time, and at the very next weekly night time pro race at OCIR, I was 3rd (out of around 12) going into and coming out of the first turn, and kept consistently getting good starts again until I broke my friggen leg soon afterwards. The sprocket change certainly helped it get to the first turn faster, but it definitely wasn't the only thing that did because it was a day and night difference in power and acceleration like I was suddenly on a completely different bike.
If this setup gives me even just a small increase in mid range power (like around 3 hp) without loosing any low end (not that it has any to loose now), I will be absolutely ecstatic. If it gives me even more, I will probably need to wear depends when I ride it. The 1 tooth smaller counter shaft sprocket I installed a few weeks ago finally made it barely competitive, and that is just barely in some sections, so it still needs more low end (which ain't gonna happen) or more mid range so I can clear some of these bigger jumps that come immediately after exiting a corner....or I just need to finish putting my 250 back together and start riding that again, but I would still like to remove around 4-5 more lbs from it.

I'll be interesting to hear what it feels like. I've never heard of fiber reeds adding top end horse power, but they sure do smooth out "the hit" and on smaller bores they seem to add usable power starting about 500 to 1,000rpm lower than with steel reeds. I've never used a spacer on a bike engine, always thought they were snake oil, but if your cage is against the boost port it might make a big change. I assume the additional width is easily absorbed by the air box boot? How are yours after all these years? My 17 year old boots are already starting to crack.:(
5 pounds? Aluminum bars, silencer and foot pegs? Tell me your not using the old style foot pegs!

As far as ading top end goes, the reeds didn't on my 250, however, as you can see by the dyno chart, they extended the peak rpm by around 500 rpm which is obviously a huge margin but nearly pointless on these bikes because they rev to 7500 rpm anyway which is borderline insane. The reason the guys bike didn't rev to 7500 on the dyno is because he put a torque pipe on it with a ridiculously long head pipe.
My bike basically has no significant "hit" at all. The power delivery is incredibly linear and fairly wide, and I finally have it tuned where I can open the throttle and lug the engine and it carburetes flawlessly and accelerates from nearly idle, however, it just doesn't pull when doing that like a Maico, or virtually any other big bore bike of that era does. The 80 model 465 has a massive jit in the mid range and I have a good 80 cylinder but the 80 pipe is screwed, but those things were borderline dangerous because they came on so hard and I have no interest in taking that type of ride, so I'm going to stick with the slower and smoother 81 setup.
Yeah, the big bore yz's are the only bike I know of that the spacers work on, but as you know, the mfg's will sell anything whether it works on other bikes or not just to make a buck since they already had the pattern for them.
The additional width/length is unfortunately not "easily" absorbed by the boots even though it does not seem like much because the boot on the airbox on these bikes is literally around just 1/2" long, lol, so getting the carb in is very hard, especially with slightly dry 38 year old boots, so one hopes to not have to remove the carb very often. Also, it then locates the carb between the frame tubes enoigh that it can no longer be rotated very far and also makes removing and installing the slide a major pita, but I'm not worried about that because if it works, I won't have to screw with the carb after I rejet it anyway.
I already have a plan to remove around 5 more lbs and I bet you can easily guess what it is knowing me a bit now, but I will give you a hint and say that it has to do with an expensive material. My bars are the original steel ones on my 250 so I will probably get some aluminum ones as well. As far as the footpegs go, yup, I am still using the originals, lol. I have found out that the factory titanium pegs from the newer yamahas will bolt right on and I have seen them for around $40.00 a set on ebay, but unfortunately, the front part of the peg is around 1/2" farther forward which will screw up my shifter and brake pedal distances, so I can't use them.
I was going to modify an aluminum kick starter to fit which will save around .6 lbs but I haven't gotten around to it yet. I would love to get 1o lbs off the 465 but I just don't want yo spend what it will take to do that. I haven't weight both bikes yet but just by pushing them both around, my 250 feels like it is at least 30 lbs lighter which I know it isn't but it literally "feels" like a 125 compared to the 465 now, so when I get back to riding it, it should feel extremely light by comparison because I will also be stronger from trying to hang onto the 465.

Haven't posted in a while. Some of you wondered how the barn is coming I started in fall of 17'. Had a rough go last year, between the super hot weather, fall rain and losing my dad, not much got done. Wrapped purlins up this spring, and got a deal on a guy to finish the sheet metal. Ordered a roll up door yesterday.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190707/7d79752959305c116c3412e9f385d80c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190707/8599245b1a8d94b10c89f42c7b15070b.jpg

After i show an escspe hybrid to a potential buyer this morning i am off to test the new reeds and reed dpacer in the beast. Im taking some silencer packing with me too and will check the condition of the existing packing after a few laps because i never checked it cuz i got lazy and it may very well be blown out and this will affect how it runs as well. If i don't post results tonight you can send me flowers at the perris medical center if you want.

REED VALVE TEST REPORT
And the verdict is....there is no verdict yet.
I was a bit under the weather today so I couldn't go 100%, but I still got in enough testing to determine that it is at the very least not any slower, lol.
As far as increasing the power, it seemed to gain a very small amount at around 3500 rpm and a bit more in the higher rpm range, but nowhere near the 9 hp that the guy that dynoed his bike got, however, he did not use a reed spacer, so it is possible that even though the reeds block the rear boost port a bit, the 465's will still have more power without the spacer.
One thing it did do was start up easier than it typically does, however, starting with this pig is hit and miss (usually miss), so I can't draw any conclusions yet as to whether these changes make it start easier. I should know after next week when I'm gonna have to start the fkr five friggen times. If they do, then that alone makes it worth the trouble and expense to do these mods.

My 79 stock 460 4x4 got 8mpg on a good day.
I had a Quick Fuel 750 Slayer on it and had thought of getting the Brawler, but that kind of mpg % increase with FI has me intrigued for sure. My addition of the new aluminum heads, long tube headers, and aluminum intake should shave some weight and help fuel economy/performance. I want to keep my AC which will rob some power all by itself so I'll need to compensate elsewhere

Will do yaegerb!
I kept the AC and PS/PB etc also. To make it easy I went with a sonic cleared D0VE block for the stroker and opened up the iron heads 2.25/1.76 and 30 hrs of porting. They flow well, I didn’t go with aluminum at the time for driving/reliability but maybe I will change it up.
Torquey thing, ripped out 1st set of engine mounts so we chained it to the frame. It has also twisted some drive shafts so now I have some custom f450 shafts. It ate the original limited slip rear so now a locker in the D60. I think I am on my 3rd transmission/converter combo.
One other mistake was not tapping in the freeze plugs. I Stomped on it after build and it blew out 3 plugs. So out came the motor so we could tap in solid plugs. That should stiffened up the block.
I think I need some valve seals as I’m getting a puff on starting. Compression test is 5% or less(can’t remember)
Right now the electronic header cut outs are messing up 02 sensor for FAST during “learning” mode. This is messing up the idle a bit. It runs well in default closed loop mode =more troubleshooting.
We also kept the original twin tanks so that lead to a great deal of plumbing and switches. It was nice to get rid of the frame rail pump and go back to in-tank pumps(quieter.)
Definitely an adventure

Are you tearing up the mounts or the frame towers?
I had a new set of L&L mounts that are nothing more than a rubber block bonded between two pieces of steel. Mine are already deformed and cracking and will likely fail under my 600hp target
I was actually intending on changing them out with these units.....

Yeah, guys have been using chains nearly since advent of the automobile, and I have used a few myself and never tore anything up by using them. The fancy new torque arms are nearly the same thing with the exception that some add additional damping to "soften" the transition from motor mount stretch to rigid chain, but you could easily add some rubber insulators to a chain setup. In fact, some cars came with a torque arm and I think my Maserati had one. I wouldn't be surprised if the new Dodge Hellcat has one as well.
