My favorite year of dent side Fords. S/B, L/B or Step Side, factory four or auto? You gotta appreciate a I-6 build over a V-8 just for the uniqueness of it.

^ Borg Warner T-18.
Years ago when I was looking for a older pickup to drive, I wanted a Chevrolet, but couldn't find one at the time with an inline and a manual. This one has the dual tanks too, so that pretty much put me behind the wheel.
I bought one of these model trucks and keep it in the cab.

Wrong color, but has the same factory Ford camper shell as mine. The model even has the compass rose painted on the front sides of the shell like the actual ones (which are emblems).
Someone has to like an I-6 to build it up, because it's not going to be cheap to do like with a modern V8. The I-6 was much more popular in places like South America. Brazil even got a fuel injected Chevy 250. There are some Argentinians with wicked crossflow head models. The Australians also modified and raced them extensively, and there was a Ford 200 crossflow head that came from there and made big power.

I did not have a micrometer with me but it appears that the groups steadily got bigger moving down from 23.7 /23.6
I will have to measure but they appear pretty equal. I also may have to go up 0.1 until groups open up again(seen at around 24.0 last time)
23.6
I added a spent 22 Long rifle cartridge for some reference, of course this is slightly an optical illusion making the group size appear slightly smaller but nevertheless still pretty good groups for 100 yards/5 shot groups

the donor has a blown motor and spun bearings so crank swap wasn稚 possible

So I cut off the straight portion of bad crank, drilled to accept the 3/8 bolt that taper crank is tapped for and then bored the taper
Run out is 0.002, next to get a 5” 3/8 fine bolt to hold on the taper and then decide if I cut a secondary key or weld
run out is so good, welding concerns me but hand cutting that keyway on the crank is going to be a pain. It would also be a custom key, straight transitioning to 1/2 moon on high side of taper
Shaft may see some shock loads
Will see

I'm running six into two headers on the 300 six. Just an issue with headers on an inline. These headers aren't particularly well fitting, so that's the major part of it. I'm not sure of the brand, because I haven't seen another set with similar primary bends, and I can remove the starter with them in place. Most other brands make getting the starter off nearly impossible without loosening things up.
I'm kicking around replacing them with the dual EFI cast manifolds. Less heat, less noise, longer lasting, and better sealing.
Power Nation recently done a N/A 300 build, getting 300ft/lb of torque, with a nearly stock engine except bolt on parts and a cam. They done a turbo Chevy 292, getting over 500ft/lb. There's an insane Turbo Jeep inline build, with more than 800 horsepower.
Ah, an older one. The 97-10 two and three valve 5.4L v8s were notorious for having manifold issues, I figured that's what you were dealing with. I'm a v8 fan but I openly admit that the 300 straight 6 was the best engine Ford ever built, haha.

None of the stock Ford and Chevy I-6's had common manifold problems, it's mainly when using aftermarket parts that it becomes an issue. Exhaust manifolds can and do crack on any of them, but it was Jeep that had the most issues and why there's an aftermarket, tubular exhaust manifold (sort of like a header, but not truly) with flex joints built in. If you hear an older Cherokee with an exhaust leak, a cracked exhaust manifold it probably the problem.
Inline sixes are long lasting and tough due to their balanced design. There's a reason why V6 and I4 four engine use a counterbalancer, and flat plane V8's vibrate more than cross plane ones. A lot of people don't know that the overwhelming majority of 18-wheelers in the US use inline, six cylinder engines. One of Dodges best engines was a diesel inline six; the Cummins. UPS used Ford 300s in their delivery trucks, before switching to diesel engines.

It has not been extra warm been pretty normal here. but snow wise we haven't has hardly any. 1 4 inch blanket early October I think. And the last couple weeks maybe 4 inches total. nothing in between! I would not call it "global warming". Just wonder where the heck all the snow is??? Of course, your cold is much much colder! our lows are usually around -5 in winter at an extreme. Has not got that low this year.

I had a new glass for the blasting cabinet cut today and got the new repop metal battery tray in for my '79 F150.
The headers were also finished and I picked them up.
266548
Installing the intake and headers on this are a PITA and really need six hands. I marked the gasket by putting it on the headers and intake separately. This is the only way to ensure stuff at least closely lines up. There aren't really any bolts, it's mostly held on by clamps and many of those are General Motors ones from other engines I had.
266549266550266551
What appears to be an alignment hole is just an April Fools joke.
266552
I got to a stopping point after manhandling the headers in place.
266553
I didn't want to drain the cooling system to remove the intake, which is why it's still there.
The thing is, at least with these headers, I can remove the OE size starter without removing the headers (I know for a fact). That isn't true for other brands out there. As crappy as these are, I wouldn't want to sacrifice that feature as I've had to replace a starter in a parking lot already.

Cool pics of the older bikes shep......the GSXR with the stock exhaust, RC51, Pilot, etc.
We've been seriously considering a new monkey for a couple of reasons....First it would make a great little learner bike for my wife...for the street and stuff and secondly it would make a great RV dingy so to speak....put on the back of our RV. The problem around here is they are over $5000 new. I mean it's not a deal breaker but I could get some used little rebel or Honda CM/CB or something just as cool in great original shape for a third of the cost of a Monkey. Especially considering how much it's going to get really used....very minimal.

Knappy, ya the monkey bikes are $4,400 here. The groms are $3,800. Those monkey bikes are really comfy the seats are like a couch.... The grom seat feels hard as a rock or close to it (im already looking for a aftermarket seat and a better "louder" exhaust system's. My son recently started a new full time job w/benefits town job and the good pay and overtime $ plowing is burning a hole in his pocket....(he's paying cash for his grom, the second grom were putting 2grand down and the payments in his name (co-signing) so it'll start his credit scoring. Still working out the details but yes it sounds like this week we're purchasing two-a green and orange one- deposit was already left......
I think we'll have the dealer store them until spring though. Hope i/we don't regret getting these, they do look like fun though.
We know people (older than me) with monkey bikes and they've been cruising everywhere on them the past few yrs. The groms are just more sporty looking. I keep hearing gas prices will hit an all time high this summer (hope not) but these things get around 200miles per gallon-ish. The wifes never ridden a dirt or streetbike and she's tippy on "three wheels" but she wants to give it a try.

Deal is still on. Need to buy the 1/2" impact in store and price match with WM Dyck and Sons out of Niverville MB. That gets you down to $139.99. HD takes another 10% off because it's a brick and mortar. The impact comes with a free starter kit right now that you can return for about $75. Don't get too greedy. I grabbed 7 in one transaction yesterday, and the manager was flipped out. Paid $1000 but the discount was also around $1200. After he saw me leave customer service without the charger kits, he realised I had just returned them. Grabbed my arm and told me that I couldn't do that. I quickly informed him that he had just assaulted me during a pandemic, and I had every right to kick his 65 year old ass. Grabbed my cart and walked out the door as he was yelling and screaming at me. $525ish for 7 impacts is a great deal to me. Nothing illegally done. Its their return policy that needs tweaking.
Used to do lots of vintage rides. Had about 60 of them 10 years ago. Haven't ridden much the last 5 years. That old Olympic is ready to ride. Not much snow this year.

Working too late in the shop and literally forgetting that locking pliers exist.
I was using some pliers to hold something together with one hand, and holding a bolt in while simultaneously trying to thread the nut on with the other. I actually got up to find a small C clamp and looked in my box. Upon seeing the locking pliers, I knew it was time to put up the tools and call it a day (night).

It took a little longer because I needed to clearance the transmission crossmember so one header reducer wouldn't be rubbing on it anymore. It's been like that since I put these headers on years ago and I just now got around too it.
Having the headers ceramic coated kind of gave me the energy I needed to finally do it. Anyone who's put headers on a few vehicles knows not to have anything finalized before they've been fully installed, because there's a good chance some tubes will have to be hammered on.

Finally was able to make it in to work Wednesday...only put the pickup in the ditch once but I made it....I'll call that a win. Highways were taken care of quick but backroads still suck. I drive a 2wd 1st gen Tacoma...loaded up some sandbags and junk in the bed, and any time I left the highway on backroads I had to chain up.
They are calling for a foot of snow here and -25°C (-13°F) temps Monday. I guess it's not apopular opinion but I enjoy some good cold winter weather. Starting to feel like home....drug out a parts 3 wheeler with a rusted frame and got it running. At least we'll have some fun with this weather.

The next 48hrs is not going to get better for our region and it is currently strained as it is. And the regions around us are not much better so there isn't many places to import energy.
This has been years in the making. Renewables provide low cost energy and has forced retirements of older fossil fueled generators. When the wind ain't blowing and the blades are iced.........not much left to lean on.

It's -14F air temp right now, but its calm and no wind chill factor, but by midnight the wind comes and its supposed to be blowing 10-15mph tomorrow morning so that will be fun.
Generator is always on standby with a couple 20lber's of propane, plus the tank on my BBQ and my heater in the garage i always have plenty of propane around to keep things running if the worst happens. I have been meaning for years now to get a larger propane tank for it, but i can get a lot of runtime out of a 20lb tank and its easy to exchange in town at a couple places, and i can rotate them between my heater and BBQ so it's just a convenient size for me.
I bet tomorrow with the cold things will get interesting, been below zero all week, but tomorrow will be the worst yet with the wind chill.

https://www.idrivearkansas.com/
I haven't seen any crashes yet, but a whole bunch of idiot driving. People are still speeding/driving too fast for conditions and tailgating as usual.
During inclement weather, traffic fines should double, or even triple. All cars involved in multi-vehicle crashes during weather like this should have the black box info recorded, by law. No ands, ifs, or buts. It's already enough that emergency workers are having to deal with the weather, but if someone is critically injured, there's a much greater chance they'll die before getting assistance or reaching a hospital.

Nico that sucks, id guess the houses in Mexico suck for anything below freezing. Hope you can get the pipes thawed out. I've been lucky here, no frozen pipes but the bathroom at work is completely frozen up, plasma table froze in the shop, diesel gelled in everything. This mornings low was -27°C (-17°F). Coldest I've seen in my time in Oklahoma, and comparable to any cold winter day in Ontario. The truck started but she sure didn't like it...I guess I have an idler pulley bearing going out on the AC belt, it screamed like a mofo till it got warmed up. It certainly got worse today. The major highways around here were pretty clear, but not this morning, with it pissing white again. Once the temps warm up just enough to thaw a little during the day, then freeze again at night, the roads are going to get seriously bad. I've got tire chains for the pickup though.
Luckily, I've got snowmobile accessories for my street helmet. A double layered face shield, breath mask, and chin curtain. I'm prepared and ready to have fun!
A SxS is fun, until it isn't. By that, I mean when they turn over or get stuck. It's not nearly as difficult to turn them over as some people may thing either. If there isn't anything to anchor to with a winch, you better have some anchor devices with you. Burying one up in a pasture is going to be a miserable walk out.
It's not fun having to walk and get a vehicle or help to turn one back over either. Yes, sometimes they can be flipped back over by hand, but they don't always land in that convenient position or place.
It's basically driving a Jeep, so better have all the winch equipment that a person would carry in one of those. Also need to wear a helmet, because there's a whole lotta crap to bang your head against that could result in some stitches or a concussion, and that's if the seatbelt is on and you're not thrown out. Getting rag-dolled out of one isn't fun, I know. It's a whole different kind of hurt compared to being thrown off a trike.
I'd rather not have to deal with all that surface area either, when cleaning one after a muddy ride.
I don't think I personally know anyone who hasn't broken at least one CV joint on thiers.
Yeah, sure, they're fun alright...

Watching the IDrive cameras again this morning, even though it's giving my anxiety. Thank goodness I don't have to drive anywhere.
This is I30 in Texarkana. Yes that truck is PASSING the other vehicles, and they're not going slow by any means.
266726
This line is moving along pretty good, and that following distance is too little even for dry roads and good weather.
266727
This is just northeast of Texarkana and both vehicles are hauling butt, as in legal highway speeds for good conditions.
266728
If that isn't scary enough, realize that a minuscule amount of drivers here even have winter tires. Maybe none actually.
Anyone who honestly watches car racing for the crashes, can just watch IDrive Arkansas today. https://www.idrivearkansas.com/
Maybe you can video a live crash and post it on social media for viral views. Whose the winner? You are!
I'd say be safe out there, but it's impossible with the way the majority of people drive.
EDIT:
Looky here, I found some brilliant motorists, now stuck on the side of the interstate in Fayetteville. I bet they're complaining about how long it's taking someone to tow their vehicles, when their me,me,me attitude is what most likely put them there in the first place.

266730
I was watching one of those cameras.....just picked one at random and saw nothing for some time then 2 semi's side by side...one trying to pass the other with what looked like some serious speed..... nuts!

Two burst pipes and a plugged drain so far. It only went down to 25F, 15F on the index thingy, but that’s the coldest I’ve ever experienced in the past 21 years here. The air conditioner heater feature doesn’t work at this temperature, so all we have is the gas stove to keep warm. I’d love to be in a nice warm, insulated Canadian house right now.
Just came in to the house for supper. 37c in the shop, -26c outside. Feels like summer compared to last week

I don’t miss the week long deep freezes at all. Do you guys at least have enough snow to keep the water pipes from freezing up like they did a few years ago?

Several coworkers have had pipes freeze when it went negative temps a few days ago. We were lucky, haven't heard any hissing under the house. I will crawl under there later and check but for now....f it.
I sealed off my crawlspace vents a few years ago and put in a dehumidifier. I think my floors are so poorly insulated that a lot of heat escapes down there. That and the warm ducts keep it warm enough.
My mom had the roof fall in on a shop building.......where the antique cars are

A large portion of I40 was turned into a parking lot, thanks to reckless drivers. One incident involved a big truck, that hit-and-ran a State Troopers patrol car. They found him on down the road.

Just a whole lot of crap all over the state, but that section of I40 between Little Rock and Memphis is a three ring.
https://www.thv11.com/article/traffic/accident-on-i-40-in-lonoke-county-blocks-all-travel-lanes/91-a4ab795b-e6f3-4683-9a4a-a5ab86511d20

That section of 40 is panic inducing even during good weather. It's mostly big truck traffic, not obeying ANY laws, and virtually no law enforcement present. If the price of corporations doing business is a few lives, so be it. Riding a motorcycle on that stretch is miserable.
Some images of that stretch from yesterday. One of the crashes is barley in screen, but it's there.

Much of it is still a parking lot this am.

This is going into Memphis, over the Arkansas River. Yes, that's a pyramid, and no, it's not connected to aliens. It's for bass fishing equipment. :)
266753
The traffic was moving at a safe pace, but then again, it was probably out of fear more than caution, because just down the road, they were back to passing each other.
This is from Index bridge this morning, over the Red River, facing the Arkansas side. It's highway 71, going into Texarkana.
266754
The states that physically close interstate travel during weather like this, are way ahead in tax money saved, and lives. There is not nearly enough emergency personal to handle that kind of stuff, and people continually prove too ignorant to properly handle their vehicles during it. Texarkana at least shut down some flyovers. I'd bet there were some car drivers stuck idling on I40 yesterday, with the fuel light on, and freaking out because of their own poor planning, and not a blanket one in the car.

I hate driving that stretch from Little Rock to Memphis. Even when there isn't bad weather you better check for road construction delays or accidents.
Normal conditions is littered with big trucks and everyone else driving 80-90mph to get by them. If you get in the fast lane, you better smash that loud pedal or you get runt over. If you get back over in the slow lane to let faster cars by, you get caught behind big trucks obeying the speed limit or some danm idiot pulling 3 salvaged cars with "IN TOW" written on the back glass.

Weather can change quickly in a lot of places, but in the south, it's the humidity that really yanks people's chains.
It can be cool and dry in the morning, then complete ball sweat by lunch. The shop floor goes from safe, to a slip-&-slide in half an hour.
The only difference between rain and not is 1%. 99% humidity and not raining, to 100% which means it's raining.
No joke, the shop here has a floor squeegee hanging on the wall. I've been using it this past snow fall to clear the melted snow from the trikes on the floor, but it's really there for the summer humidity. I have to keep the tool boxes closed except for getting tools, to keep water off of them so they don't rust.

^That much humidity...gross! I think I'd melt. Up here we're drier than a popcorn fart, especially in winter. For snowfalls less than an inch I use a gas powered leaf blower to clear the driveway, lol. I think we're around 30% humidity in the winter on average and it's not uncommon to get nose bleeds at night while sleeping. We were forecasted to get above freezing for the first time in over a month so me and the neighbor decided to sweep and flood the lake rink Friday knowing it would be used a lot this weekend. I made a few mods to the red neck zamboni by drilling out the holes to 1/4", added a sealed top with filler tube, leveled out the hitch to carry more water and put a floating level gauge on it. We used the neighbors 104 degree hot tub water which makes a nice bond with the ice. With the past temperatures we had the ice is ~3' thick and right down to the sand bottom now.

Sunday, I took man dog and a co-worker who's originally from India and introduced them to snowshoeing; thankfully the snow was only about a foot deep in the open areas and less in the bush so it wasn't a hard slog. I picked up the trail cameras and we burned up some moose pepperonis over a fire for lunch which he enjoyed immensely. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of fresh moose sign in the area and hoped to find a shed antler for him but we didn't.

My 2WD Chevy has the locking rear diff and I realized one day the traction control (stabilitrak) was not letting the diff to lock. It needs 100RPM of wheel spin before it locks and the traction control would try to minimize wheel spin.
I was going uphill in a field with grass and started spinning and all the lights came on (oooohhhh!!! I'm spinning!!!!) I turned that off and you could feel the diff lock after it spun just a little and away I go.
Sometimes ingenuity gets in the way.

Yeah, all that whizbangery gets in the way sometimes. I can't hardly operate a new truck, because off all the secret handshakes needed to turn things off or on.
Our 2wd Suburban (older, with no traction control) has a G80 locker. I compared it with my truck during the snow, seeing how they both would do up the driveway, which is fairly steep. The Sub made it up no problem, slow and steady, no run at it. My truck, even though it has the heavy camper shell and had about 50gal of fuel in it, couldn't make it with the open diff. I even tried getting a run at it after it failed in granny.
I've really been looking at the Detroit TrueTrac for a while now, to go in my truck. It seems like the most useful unit for me, with mostly street use. An air or electric locker would be nice too, but no more than I'd use it, the air lines or electrical stuff would probably have problems the first time I did.
That traction control stuff can really be a pain in off-road situations, where wheel spin is needed. I don't just mean in pickups either. Driving a car in a grassy field that's a little muddy, and the traction control is the reason it's stuck and won't move. It doesn't always want to turn on or off like it's supposed to either when they start doing weird stuff. Kind of like getting a 4x4 stuck before putting it into 4wd, then it won't go, because the wheels won't roll. Just sitting there, with a 4x4, stuck in 2x4.

Catching up on some smaller projects.
Done an upper intake clean with some SeaFoam on my mom's car. I've used several pieces of specialty equipment to do this service while working in auto shops, but SeaFoam now has a retail product which includes something similar to an S-tool. Direct inject vehicles have serious issues, but even regular multi-port injected vehicles don't have anything other than nasty blowby fumes going through the upper intake (PCV valve), which decreases their performance over time, especially ones with variable volume intakes. The cheaper the gasoline, the nastier they get too, and mom uses E-Z Mart gas of the lowest octane (premium usually has more cleaning agents). This car hasn't ever been done, and with the SeaFoam 'kit', I noticed an immediate improvement in smoothness and MPG. I was just about to buy an S-tool before I seen the SeaFoam upper intake cleaner in Walmart. All my crap has carburetors, so fuel system cleaner in the tank does the same basic thing. Same thing for any throttle body systems.
Anyway, there was an immediate improvement, so I was glad that turned out well and I found a retail product that would do the job.
The other thing was replacing the battery tray on my '79 F150. It was getting to the point that I worried the battery would literally fall out, and I'd run over it. The inner fender needs repaired, but that'll have to wait; maybe another decade or two.
266830
The bolts look rusty, but they are brand new on the inside.
266831
Under the tray. Yes, the front tire shows through.
266832
It's OK though, because the rust has been reformed.
266833
One ORIGINAL, slightly used '79 F150 battery tray.

I have been finishing the inside of my garage. The structure has been here for longer than we have and finally! The building is a 24x30 foot and has always been framed and roofed with outside panels. Of late I have insulated, sheetrocked, and mudded. The upper sheetrock has hurt me. lol my age is showing itself to me. just touched up the last 5 spots with mud and waiting for them to dry then the primer and paint. The whole reason for even doing this now is the building is no longer a glorified storage unit, but my shop. Those old scopes are still useful. Last shop I was at still had one of those, but I only got it out once or twice jus to play with and see if it still worked.
A good way to get into reading ignition waveforms, if you got it cheap enough. Most people still want stupid prices for old diagnostic equipment, that $100 can buy new now.
Basically anything with a spark plug, you can at least use some of the functions. It'll do a power balance test, and that'll give you a really good idea about cylinder operating condition on multi cylinder engines. It's going to much more useful on older vehicles with distributors, and even older ones with points.
Just being able to read waveforms, once you get to understand what you're seeing, will tell you a heck of a lot about what's going on in the engine. It's mountains better than pulling plug wires with an engine running, or holding the brake and loading one in gear to force a misfire.
The huge drawback on that old scope is it's stationary and live. No easy way to drive with it in the vehicle and it doesn't record data.

I've haven't tried any of this with the old scopes like that, just newer handheld ones.
Depending on the scope and what back probe accessories you have, it may be possible to look at injectors, electric motors (fuel pumps), and other electrical components that use or produce some type of oscillating electrical pattern.
Throw an amp meter, and a few other tools into the mix, and you may be able to do quite a bit with it.
I mention using it to look at electric fuel pumps, because you can just tap into the fuse for the pump, and see if it's bad, before it actually goes out. You can also count the poles on pump with the scope, determine the RPM, then use and amp meter to see if it's straining under pressure.
That unit doesn't record data, but you can use your cell phone to video it. That's not a perfect situation, but it'll allow you to record baseline data on something that is good, so if it flubs up in the future, you'll have the graph to compare it to. Having a record of known good scope data is a HUGE benefit when running diagnostics. There are paid subscription, automotive websites that have a library of the stuff. It's that valuable.
Edit: Here's a short video using a scope on the ignition secondary side and the fuel injector to determine the cause of a misfire. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXrd1fYwj1o

That manual give some pretty good examples of various waveforms.
I mean something completely different about recording. Freeze, yes, it'll do that, and store the info for a bit, but it's memory is completely different tech from the new stuff. You won't have a file, and certainly nothing that can be manipulated and compiled with other information.
From that manual:
266912
When you get some waveforms, certainly post up what you're working on and what you found. Primary side of a healthy trike ignition? Dwell on a ATC70/110? There's probably not many people who've hooked up a scope to them, it'll be interesting.
Although you may not be getting too deep into it, here's another video showing how much information a scope can provide to mechanics who already have an advanced working knowledge of the vehicle they're working on. It also touches on waveform libraries and a place to look. Start at about 2:40, to get past the intro stuff.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYHphciFnH4
I do want to point out, that kind of diagnostics being done in the video actually saves owners money, and fewer things are likely to be monkeyed with since they used the information to narrow down the problem, before touching anything. It isn't just a bunch of malarkey used to charge more money, and the people that do this stuff on a daily basis are sure enough techs, just as much as they are mechanics.

Sure, price is important, but if it's something you really put some time into, you don't want to see it trashed.
It's either pass it own, before you do, and have control over who gets it, or it just going to whoever after you're gone and them possibly treating your hard work like it was worthless. Gonna put it though it’s paces. I saw it running and stopping
If no overheat issues or brake problems, I will likely just use it
I may have to rethink my floor covering. I have some thin sheet metal that I leave down for welding protection and splatter etc. As soon as the forklift pulled on it it shot the plates out from underneath it. This doesn’t happen with any of my other vehicles even when turning in sharp circles etc. likely it’s due to the weight and the stickiness of the cushion tire grip.

I'll bite, what is that? Looks like some sort of cafe racer?
She started out life as a 1976 750F. This is the only picture I have that I screenshotted several years ago. It was actually really fun to ride in that state but like everybody at the time we all had a cafe racer bug up our asses and had to have one. I always wanted to have one that was usable... safe to ride but period specific. I never liked modern running gear on older bikes or single shock death trap contraptions, etc........ rather an old school feel and ride with period specific improvements. I can't count the cafe conversions I've seen with rear sets and riding positions that look like you were fuking a football.....very unsafe for the rider's and unsafe for other motorists. I always try to avoid that in any cafe projects we did.

LOL! Remember the lay down drag bikes of the 70’s? I bought a 78 Suzuki drag bike with lay down pegs and the RH peg was positioned directly behind the exhaust megaphone. I made exactly one pass like that and ended up with my leg flailing around in the air as I went through the traps after I realized I was cooking my foot around the 1/8 mile and pulled it off the peg. Oddly that bike never won a best engineered award.

I remember guys laying down on stock bikes and putting their feet on the passenger pegs. No shifter or rear brake access and their sternums resting on metal gas tank because why?

How does that even happen? Maybe it's hot, lol. If all it needs is a propane tank....that's something! Maybe get the forks checked for cracks. We call that "Non-Destructive Testing" or NDT up here. Pretty simple to do but you have to have the supplies and ticket to properly certify as safe.

Bought it from scrapyard, they took it in and were using it in the copper/battery/aluminum area of their operation (indoors.)
They upgraded and offered it to me for bit less than .10c/lb
I got it power washed, sending it out for service. I don’t think anything has been done on it for years.
Fluids/filters and brakes.
Likely it’s last service as I won’t use it enough to justify another.

Those metal guards work good for keeping logs off your lap, or on a dedicated demo machine. But when your digging around utilities and the like a guy has gotta be able to see and be able to hear the ground guy yelling if he wants something different than what I'm doing. I bet you remember a lot of different brands growing up :beer
Allouette sno brute is on top right with the checkered flags snow flap. That is a sno pony with a 340 JLO twin to the left of that.
"Rosie" is a 69 capri with a 372 hirth single next to the trailfire

I love vintage sleds! I had a 1970 Ski-Doo Nordic 399. One of my buddies had a 76 Moto-Ski Nuvic 340 which was an excellent sled, and another had a Ski-Roule with a Sachs engine. We never got that one going but it was Ski-Roule's hot sled for that year. I loved how it looked.

Looking in the lower left corner to the right of the trike I see a chrome bumper below the cover, is that a Moto-Ski? Looks like the bumper of an early 70’ Zephyr, or GP.
Fabio mentioned a 76 Moto-Ski. I’m trying to recall exactly what year, but at some point by then they were rebranded Bombardiers. The herd was thinning by then, I believe Rupp and Allouette were done around then, but there were still more brands than I can remember with all kinds of weird features. There was one sled in particular (I think it was a Johnson) that a buddy had with twin engine in which both cylinders fired at the same time. The thing could pull stumps.

^I still love the classic look of the yellow, round nosed ski-doo (Olympique?). It seems to be the one that makes it on any old time drawing from the 60's that involves a sled. And to think I live where there's 5 months of snow I have never owned a sled! I've toyed with the idea of getting a workhorse vintage sled to pull an ice fishing shack onto the lake (I live 200' from shore) but it's just another thing to fix and store in the off season.

Nico Good eye! that is a 70 MS18 next to the 250SX and 70. It is one of the nicer machines I have bought to date and it has a JLO 372 single.
I had a couple evinrude skeeters we nicknamed ol thumper that has the opposed twin cylinder, kinda ugly machines to me, but many had reverse so that was a big plus.
The sled you thought was a Merc is an 1974 Arctic Cat El Tigre, directly below that is a 75 eltigre 440, both have the quad plug Kawasaki engines. The free airs go fast, but seems people can melt them down fairly easy.
This year I started to sell off a few that I won't ever get to or lost interest in, got rid of a 73 JD400, 72 Cheetah, 72 Chaparral Thunderbird, and tomorrow meeting a guy from Maine in Lowell Mass to sell a 71 Capri with a Hirth 338.
Still hoping a couple more will sell this spring like a 70 Sno jet, 70 panther EXT and a 71 big mouth panther chassis that should have a 634 Hirth.
Will still have 30+ sleds, next winter hopefully another 4-5 go as well, more projects then I can ever get to...

You selected the vehicle that fits the riders capabilities and allows for the wife to have proper oversight of your grand daughter, well done! Nothing I hate more is seeing 8 year old kids riding massive machines because it's "cute". Add belt drives, big HP and power steering and it's a recipe for disaster IMHO.

Today i potted it, i have taken apart OEM CDI's and they always seem to be sitting on the bottom of the box with no potting or very little between the PCB and the box, it should be fully encapsulated. I pour some in the box, give it 10-15 mins so the stuff at the bottom starts to firm up then put in the board and pour in the rest, if you get the amount just right it will fill up the bottom of the connector shell and around the contacts and the little channels in the connector shell, a good watertight seal. I haven't had one fail yet, the ones i have made will probably outlive me since some of the OEM ones are still kicking 40+ years later.
267109
267110
If i get some time someday i should build a dozen of them and just keep some stock on hand in case guys need them. Not sure what i would sell them for, i put more time and labor into them then they are worth probably, but i demand quality out of these. I burned through three chinese ones on my 200ES before i built one and put it on last summer, i've made close to 20 of these now for myself and others locally. So far so good!

It would be nice to get one for a DR650......First gen.
It's hit and miss on ebay for a used one
Those Suzuki CDI's are a bit of black magic... I have seen the insides of one, there is a lot more going on with the circuity in them. Would have to get one down to bare PCB and reverse engineer it fully first. Who knows maybe it is a pretty basic CDI with a lot of extra buildup on it, not sure, but i do know guys on other forums that have fought Suzuki CDI's and their replacements.

That's a sweet looking machine.
It reminds me of Robbie Maddisons KTM on water.......he's got more guts on one hand than I do in my entire body. I always wondered what would happen if the bike died while on the water for whatever reason.... I'm guessing it would sink like a dumbell and another KTM would retire to the deep.

Replaced the radius arm bushings on my pickup. I put some poly ones on it years back and that's just a poor application for poly bushings. Both the rear sections cracked.
267141
267143
The radius arm bushings function completely different from other suspension pivots. They are under compression and have to actually flex. The poly just isn't suited well for it, so I went back with rubber.
267142
267144
This is a two wheel drive, manual steering pickup, and I can actually feel the difference between the two bushing materials. The rubber handles and rides better. The poly doesn't let the suspension flex properly and quickly and small road vibrations really travel through it. I've replaced the rivets on the brackets with bolts, so replacing these is a half hour job and doesn't even require a jack. If the rubber ones are done in five years, it's no big deal to replace them. The radius arm bushings on Ford twin I-beams are a huge part of keeping the front end aligned and working properly, and I'm going to stay with rubber on any of them from here on out.
Oh, and I got a little gravel road trike riding in during the weekend. No trail riding though.

Isn't odd how lumber prices have shot up, but log truck drivers aren't making any more? They're actually being squeezed by the fuel prices and no increased pay per load.
Friend of mine has a couple trucks and we were discussing it yesterday, with another driver he knows. Funny thing is if they stopped hauling the timber out of the forest, the whole system would be affected...
Of course, the system works by keeping the little guy barley getting by so they can't stop, or they'd loose everything. At some point though, there is nothing to loose, especially when all they're making is just enough to pay bills. Most people would crap themselves if they knew how little log truck drivers got per ton, versus what one 2x4 cost.
Just the cost of regular maintenance on those trucks is staggering.

That’s hilarious.
My folks have run into a number of my old school teachers over the years. You’d think after all this time they’d just say hi and move on, but for some reason the teachers always took the time to brag on my brother and sister and then went out of their way to point out what a slacker I was in comparison. Not saying it wasn’t true, but really, why go there? God I hated skool.

This next sled is super, super rare in this configuration. This is the opposed twin y'all were talking about that fires both cylinders at the same time, but it's got a crazy factory race kit on it which is unobtainium. The kit was recalled by Johnson after it was issued, so very few examples exist. Some of this particular kit had to be re-manufactured in order to complete the kit. The kit included the stuff to widen the skis, expansion chambers, I think a special clutch and carburetor? I'm going by memory of what the owner told me. Yes, you had to cut open the sled yourself in order to accommodate the widened stance and expansion chambers. Make sure you take notice of the chambers peeking through the hood, then one of them taking up space on the right side running board. It's a work of art.
There's a specific part of the clutch that's used to adjust it, like a shaft that sticks out of the center of it. You can see it in the second picture. This guy needed that part. He goes into some other dude's shed one day on an unrelated transaction, and the guy had that exact part hanging on the wall of his shed. A part of which there are hardly any other examples globally, and he walks in a random guy's shed and there hangs one on the wall. The odds of that are absolutely astronomical.
The guy who owns this is super cool. He's at one of those houses you always gawk at as you pass because they've always got some kind of machine out. He does small engine repair out of his residential garage and there were always Gravelys and stuff out there, but nothing usually to get bonered up about. Well the day I drove past there and saw this machine out there I immediately turned around and went back to introduce myself and find out what this was and who made it.
So I made a friend and found out about this crazy machine.

I always used to laugh at the teachers saying things like "well you can always flip burgers" or "the world needs ditch diggers"... One guy i went to school with barely graduated, he owns his own tiling company now days, technically not a ditch digger but he diverts the water to the ditches, and he makes more money then most of my graduating class. As for the burger flippers, there was a gal in my class that always floated above failing, we had a real A-Hole of a english teacher that always used to say you can always flip burgers instead of college... Well she owns her own franchise burger joint now, Covid didn't even hurt her, she went to doing curbside pickup and home delivery, still covered the bills without a government bailout. The teacher that teased her by the way retired and barely keeps his bills paid and nearly lost his house a few times to foreclosure... I always laugh when i drive by his place, looks like a crack house now. Karma maybe?
I'm a guy thats held a lot of jobs over the years, finally settled into my own business and work from home these days, but man i have done it all, from farming to various labor industries, manufacturing, fabrication, you name it probably did it, including ditch work. I don't regret it one bit, its been a fun experience this past 43 years...
Today, replacing the Carlisle Turfbusters on my 84 200ES finally, got some tires a month ago, just hadn't had time to get them on. New Deestone 930's in the back and knobby up front. Now that she don't push a snow plow anymore no need for those heavy rock hard Carlisle tires, i will say though, if you need a Honda to have a good load capacity and want tires that stand up to the abuse of tire chains and spinning a lot on asphalt and concrete those old Carlisle tires can't be beat for their price and durability. For all other reasons to buy them they suck!! LOL... Heavy, stiff tires they are... I won't miss them.

Ditch digging pays me very well. Sewer repairs are a pricey project for the most part, and the unfortunate part is, the customer is usually bent over the barrel. I did a whole new tap for a guy in a town 50 miles away, no contactor would touch it. We had it done in 3 days, tapping the main was the worst part, main was over 20' deep. Took a the first day just to get down to it, boxes in and core drilled the main. I kind of dislike the place I work at as nothing is properly maintained or repaired, but I love my line of work

First time I've been in a Harley shop this year, and probably won't go back again until next year. I run the Harley bran oils in it, because that's all it's ever had and I'm going to keep with it. 100,000+ miles and still runs like a top.
I did shoot the breeze with one of the sales people for a while. There's been a lot of changes on the bikes that I haven't kept up with. They've got a CVO bagger with tubeless spooked wheels, and the front is a 21". It looked pretty nice. The wheels themselves are really cool looking. Definitely a departure from the standard cast/forged, one piece types.
The big buzz right now is the Pan America adventure bike they've built. That shop has already sold one or two of them before they've even been hit any sales floors.

There's some running around in my pickup engine right now. Do you know who actually makes if for Walmart now? It used to be a little easier to find out the origin of it, but the last container I bought didn't have any manufacturer marks that I noticed.
There were quarts of Supertech 10-30 conventional in the clearance section a couple days ago. $1.50 each. Some of the synthetic too for $9 or so a gallon. Maybe they're getting ready to change the name again...Tech3000? Or, getting funky pop culture with it and naming it Master Super Tech 3000 (MST3K for short). :naughty:

Unfortunately there’s only so much room. If we would have kept the 4 stroker cranks and frames we could have had 4 more. Like most collections so much money and time go into these it’s hard to recoup your cost if you choose to sell a built machine like these.
