I recently purchased an 1986 250r with a fully rebuilt engine (hot rod, wiseco, etc) for 1300. Anyway I was wondering if getting an aftermarket pipe is really worth it, like a fatty or dg? It has a dg slip on right now so I was wondering if it's worth the extra 150-250 dollars. Thank you

Yes on the FMF. DG at least for my experience are just shiny noise makers. But a whole FMF system with get you more power and shift it depending on what silencer you go with. Had one an a LT500. Used the fatty pipe and the shorty silencer gave me more bottom end grunt. ( 2 stroke 500cc , top was FINE ) looked great lasted forever.

FMF/DG are a good improvement on an all stock motor. If you have any enhancements such as a free flow airbox, upgraded carb/reeds or porting I would call eddie at ESR and see about his ATC 5 pipe. Very good all around pipe.

I can't seem to get anyone at ESR to answer the phone- are they still in business?

Yup, but Eddie runs the place by himself now, so he fab's, takes orders, builds, does everything. I hear its best to call around 10am west coast time.

ESR pipe seems to be the gold standard out here in so cal. but very hard to find. You could also go BDT but it will cost you about 3/4 of what you got you trike for.

$150-200 isn't going to leave you much room for choices. You'll need to really keep you eyes glued for a deal. Your about half way on $cash if your looking to new race style pipe. Does it make a difference? No question, in race application with mod motors & carbs it's a must have. You trail ride the neighborhood take it out to RV parks with db regulations? Nothing wrong with stock. Just a silencer will increase flow and might be a good start for you.
