I cannot figure this thing out. Howdy said it comes off if you knock the axle out but it didn't work that easily for me. Anyone else??? Thanks in advance, Kaysen

May there possibly be a nut on the opposite side holding the whole housing on. The Pipe in the center that hold the axel may go all the way through, and be held on the other side.

The only thing I see you have left to do is to back the brake adjustments off. The drum should come right off then.

Howdy, How would you say do this? And sorry for being a nuisance, I guess it's just my nature. All I know is not to ever buy a Haynes manual, it has five models (70, 90, 110, 185, and 200) and it jumbles them all together, what a waste of $22.95. Thanks, Kaysen
Oh yeah- I saw your nice collection of three and fourwheelers, I just wish the folks would let me have half of them. |

From the looks of the rust on the floor you are going to be replacing the shoes anyway, so get a drift punch and go in thru the drum holes and hit on the shoes driving them in towards the center. If I'm not mistaken I saw the adjuster arm on the floor, try a pair of vise grips on the shaft working it back and forth to loosen the hold. This is not a time to be afraid to use a can of PB Blaster and soak the he** out of everthing.
When you use the vise grips on the cam shaft use patience, working it back & forth. Try pecking on it while applying pressure, your trying to break the corrosion loose not the parts.

Good Luck.

I have the xsame problem you are having everytime I go to do a brake job on my 83. I get 4 of the biggest zip ties can find. I snake them in one hole on the drum and out another. I do this to make two loops . Then I pull as hard as I can (bracing my feet on the frame) while I have someone tap the drum itself with a hammer. Should come off that way.

put the brake arm back on and rotate the cam so the pads retract and it should come right off. it shouldn't take any more work than that.

Alright, I'll try those ways tonight and get back with the results. Most likely I will have some more problems x ,so stay tuned. Thanks, Kaysen

Alright, I got it off. I pretty much used Tims way (by pulling real hard with tie downs), I have arranged to get the drum glassbeaded, and I will need several new parts. Some of the obvious things that I broke or rounded off were; pads, springs, the rod that is "supposed" to turn and push the brakes outward (the back brakes on this thing haven't worked in over 18 years), gasket, little spring washer, and the lever that pulls the "rod" (I beat mine to hades trying to get it off). If anyone has any of these parts, and are willing to sell them, PLEASE pm me a price and mabye a pic. Once again I thank you all for helping me out on this one. Kaysen
