A few weeks ago I purchased an RPM Dominator II extended axle for a TRX400EX. Technically, it's a TRX450R axle, but RPM has pressed on a spacer prior to the 400EX sprocket hub, which allows it to be mounted & centered properly on a TRX400EX. And as we all know, a TRX400EX axle will mount right up on an '85-89 250R. A few years ago, I explored the 400EX axle option, because I wanted a 24 spline axle instead of the 250R's 25 spline, but since an extended 400EX axle is about 2" shorter than an extended 250R axle, it wasn't worth it in my opinion, and I dropped the idea. I realize I can run 400EX or 450R hubs to make up the difference in axle length, but the main reason I wanted to switch to a 24 spline axle is so I can run hubs from a Tecate or Banshee with a 4/156 bolt pattern. Almost 30 years ago, I made some wheel adapters that bolted to my 250R hubs, which allowed me to use '87 Tecate rims. These rims are basically bullet proof, and laugh at most rock strikes. While the adapters have served me well for close to 30 years, they are a bit heavy, so it's time to shed some of that weight.

This RPM Dominator II axle measures 38.75" from end to end, while the LSR Axcalibar 250R axle measures in at 40". Tecate hubs are offset about 1/4" more than my 250R hubs, which will give a total of 1/2" more width. In addition, I've made some 1/4" thick aluminum spacers that go in between the hubs and wheels for another 1/2" total gain.

Here's the new axle installed & the hubs/spacers before powdercoat.

Wow shiny clean.

Is the swinger an inch shorter than stock? If so hows she ride different?

Wow shiny clean.

Is the swinger an inch shorter than stock? If so hows she ride different? It was when I bought it off ebay, but I immediately cut it in half and lengthened it 3", so +2" over stock. I never mounted it up or rode it at -1". After the lengthening process, I rode it a few times with the stock shock valving & spring (a wee bit spongy with longer swingarm) prior to sending the shock to Race Tech for a rebuild, Gold valve installation, & re-sprung to my weight & riding style. Awesome results afterward!

I picked up the hubs, spacers, & axle spacers from powdercoat this afternoon. I'll install later and post the finished pics then.

I know you just had your hubs coated but check out Tusk extended rear hubs. They make em for most popular models ( 400ex banshee raptor etc ) they offset 1.75" and are solid billet. Look great and last. I have em on my 350x ( similar to what you did but with a 300ex axle) and my 400ex (quad I know ,gross right?) they were only 100$ for the pair. 3.5" total in width gets you a bit further out.

Unfortunately, that's what bolt pattern all of my rear wheels are.

Hubs, spacers, & studs reassembled, and then installed. With the hubs installed, wheel mounting surface-to-wheel mounting surface of the hubs is 37 3/8", which is only 1/8" narrower than a 250R +4" axle. I think I can live with that. Now I need to polish the rear wheels, but not tonight.

Bummer. Yeah all my stuff is 4 on 110 so I wasn't sure on the Yamaha patterns. Figures I'd throw it out there. Nice rig! Let us know how the dominator axle holds up ! There a good deal in comparison to the durablue

Did a quick polish on the wheels tonight, and got them re-mounted. Project complete.

Looks great!!

I have made many adapters out of .5000 6061 plate that adapters Honda to Yamaha or other desired patterns; If you wanted something I could draw it up for ya....

I made the original adapters out of 1/4" steel. When I first gave up on the 400EX axle a few years ago, I was contemplating re-making a set of adapters out of aluminum. But now I don't need to because I've got crazy "hubadjustability." :w00t:
