Looking at a tri z.

I found a tri z fairly local on craigslist, couple hours drive. It definitely needs love no rear fenders and has a four trax seat sitting on it. Front end looks complete, front fender looks in good shape headlights and shroud look complete. What got me a little interested was no radiators. I had him send me pictures of the motor and it's an IT465!! Was this a common transplant? I'm semi-experienced with 2-strokes. Had a couple blasters and a banshee before I returned to the three wheel world. Was the 465 a good power plant? From what I have been able to find on google it seemed to be a low end torque monster. It has a few less than stellar welds on the front of the cradle and the header pipe is not the prettiest and he said the fuel pump is in-operable but will run from gravity feed. I think I can get it for less than one hundred bucks. Advise? Purchase or run away? I'll try and get a couple pics posted. Thanks guys.

If you want a Tri-Z there are plenty of 85's and newer models in complete condition. If your interested in parts of a Frankenstein it's your $. I'd steer clear of it the better $ is on a running rider for around $1200-1500. You'll find even those will need a $800 shock upgrade. Sure you can grab a Warrior to make do but all Z's biggest flawed part. Well next to the water pump issues. Always drain a bit of oil when you find a barn find type. If it's at all milky or grey the pump has failed and the head gasket has blown and the cylinder is toast. Trust me they will run ruff this way until the motor eventually locks and blows. No foam for seats means better buy one in good condition, at least the pan and foam. They ride very roomy for the taller riders and are a good all around machine. They can be good racers but take $motor,suspension,axle work to take them to the next level. Stock with a DG jeted correctly are fast as an R but the King will always be a Tecate in a drag in similar packages.

I didn't plan on getting a tri z, but came across it when scanning craigslist. Does anyone know anything about the IT465? I'll see if I can get pictures posted today. Thanks guys. If nothing else I can do the triple tree and forks upgrade on my 225dx I never got around to.

Tri-Z front end might search a bit deeper to find out how extensive the mod. If this is your intentions then the $100 and 2hr drive might work out for ya.
