Thanks for listening,
I've certainly had my share of electrical problems in the past 50 years or so but this one bugging the heck out of me.
I have a 1986 250ES 3 Wheeler in for service and when the customer dropped it off it ran and purred like a kitten. Well it sat in the spot he parked it for 3 days before I could make room on the table, I went out to bring it in and would not start, I pushed it in and up on the table and found that we had no spark . I've gone through everything I can think of so far. The unusual thing is that if it sits for a day or so I'll go over and check for spark for the hell of it since I have the spark plug hanging out and grounded so I can see right away if its there or not and low and behold it has spark, so I put the plug back in and it fires right up , sat there and idled for a couple minutes and even took acceleration without a problem, then all of a sudden within 2 minutes it shut down and again had no spark for the rest of the evening. it has done that twice so far. I have replaced the battery, spark plug , coil and cap. I'm thinking that the pulse generator might be giving out but the occasional spark is throwing me. I've tested the CDI as best as I could and unfortunately I don't have a known good one to throw in there for testing purposes. Sorry for the long Rant but has anyone out there have any ideas that I might be over looking ?
Thanks in advance.

I have the same issue with my 250ES, I have yet to test the pulse generator, also have a new ignition on order ..... I replaced the CDI, coil, fuses, battery, spark plug .... I am at the point where I actually would like to redo the complete wiring loom. One day it runs perfectly, next day nothing ....

Take the ignition switch apart and make sure all the contacts are good and clean .

This is why I have a new ignition on order, my current one is a little dodgy ....

I have an '85 250es and had a similar problem. CDI was getting flaky. It would idle "all day" but die after I got a few blocks from home. Wait about 30 seconds or a minute, hit the starter button a few more times and it would fire up and I could make it home. Now the 85 has a different cdi than the 86 and that issue was supposedly solved. Luckily for you, or your customer, the 4+2 cdi are cheap and available! Just a thought in case the switch doesn't fix it.

What have you tested when you have no spark? Was it in for this issue?

As stated in post #4 about the kill switch. Check that.

I have also heard of tapping the CDI unit with a screwdriver when you have no spark...
