OK I started a project last year that never got too far off the ground. The goal was to use my heavily modified 1982 xt550 with 2003 yz450 suspension and this pile of things to add a 3rd wheel! With inspiration from kasey's conversions I collected a 04 yzf swing arm, some vtx triples, and a 200x hub and wheel. But alas, the lathe at work died and I couldn't go any further than a quick mock up in the rear. So I put the bike back on 2 wheels for the summer. I picked up a wr500 and my dad has basically claimed the 550 so I'd feel bad turning it into a trike on him haha.... I'd pretty much abandoned the project as others fell in my lap

But thanks to these two screaming deals this project is back on the roster! I picked up this lathe for 500. Then low and behold, the next weekend a 1982 xt550 popped up for 300 bucks! I ended up giving him 200 due to a damaged case and broken shift shaft. The bike was wrecked, plastics are shot, rear wheel is bent, handlebars, kickstand ect... but she is complete and looks like she'll run without too much effort!

Front setup plan:
I have 02 yz450 forks on order and vtx triples prepped for the forks. I'm going to play with a yfz front hub to see about using that as the front setup. Reason being it will be easier to make work, brake parts are cheap and plentiful, and most of all it will allow me to use a stock yfz front wheel (and rear because of swing arm choice). This means cheap wheels and plentiful tire choices! Yfz front caliper with custom caliper bracket. However, if I don't think it'll work well or be strong enough then I'll have to fall back on modifying the 200x hub and brake setup.
Probably tri z front fender and headlight shroud with led lights (handily this bike has a DC lighting coil already so I won't even have to touch the wiring)
I do have a question here, should I try to turn the forks and make them trailing front axle instead of leading? I have a fuzzy grasp of how it'll affect handling and it seems that trikes are trailing so I expect it is the way to go

Rear setup plan:
2004 yfz rear swing arm, linkage and shock, brakes ect. I know this is a reasonable easy swap as I have already done this on the other bike. Major obstacle is frame modification. But again this allows Me to buy a set of wheels and tires for a yfz and bolt them on without issue.

Frame mods required:
First of all I'll have to make an adapter for the frame with the new shock. I've done this on the black bike (http://advrider.com/index.php?threads/1982-xt-550-rebirth-carb-suspension-and-brake-upgrades.1088470/) with great success! Been beating on it for 3 years without any issues and great performance. I will probably make a few shock mounting points so I can play with rake angles and ride height and stuff. I know nothing about proper frame geometry so I'll try to copy my 84r to get it close and I'll dial it in from there. Pointers are welcome!

Have to drill out the swing arm bolt and make custom mounts for foot pegs. Again I'll use yfz foot pegs (and possibly heel guards or nerf bars) for parts availability and price.
I will build a custom sub frame so the 84r fender and seat that I'm using fits properly and gives me a ride height that I'm happy with. I will also likely put the seat on a hinge as the rear kick on the starter would mean I'd have to take the seat off to start it (which is annoying. Biggest irritation of my 500x build haha)

Name:
I don't know what I should call this. I'm not a yamaha trike guy so I don't really know their designations well. I would guess 550dx. At 38 hp stock and disc brakes and great suspension it'll be able to get around a track or the woods fairly fast. But it's 4 stroke and won't exactly be a racing model so tri-z doesn't seem right. Although the dx seemed more like Hondas sx line, ie more trail/work not meant for high speed or airtime. The name is clearly a crucial part of the build.

anyways forks will be in by the weekend so I'll probably start playing with the front setup. Winter is setting in pretty good so I've got around 6 months here in ND to get it built. But hopefully progress will be fairly steady

So what are you doing to upgrade the engine? I'm curious since I have a XR500 plus an extra XR500 engine that came with it. The spare is SLOWLY being built with an EdCo 600 kit.

Still 500cc for mine, 12:1 wiseco, full port for 42mm carb and 28mm header tubes, clutch springs, oil cooler, remove counter balancer, xr flywheel, ect.... should be a beast haha. Got a build thread for yours?

No. As of right now, I'm planning on keeping it in the bike. I will have the stocker going so I can ride it next summer. After the big bore is built and installed on the bike, who knows?

Woohoo! Moving right along! Got my forks in and on the triples. I turned 1mm off the end of a xs1100 rear axle to make it fit the clamps. And I used a 04 yfz front hub. On the hub the inner bearing is 20mm i.d. but the outer is 15mm i.d. I pulled it to test fit on the axle. The bearing I removed is 15 i.d. 35 o.d. 11 width. Some cross references and googling and I found that blaster inner bearings are 20 i.d. 37 o.d. 9 width. So I'm gonna turn 1mm off the hub to make it fit. ("What if you, being inexperienced on a lathe, wreck said hub," you may be asking. Ah, see I bought two for just that reason!) Prime shipping so it should be here Wednesday

I have a front wheel on order as well as some 20mm i.d. tubing. The tubing is coming from China so..... I'll probably just use some random pipe to make temporary spacers.

Rear shock is also on order. I will start tearing the bike down as soon as I button up the dang sled taking up all the room in my garage hahahttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171111/31aa2aec7755008fdab9b00fdd66c6ba.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171111/dfb6a9f2b0731ab5625f9bb3cd993e91.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171111/1f7196c5445813c6ea54538a5b47fe4b.jpg

Some pictures of the donor bike. There is a hole in the case by the shifter shaft (knub...) which is a big reason why the bike was 200 bucks haha. Also milled the hub to use a blaster bearing. Time to bolt the front on for a mock up!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171209/18ddc56f698faed57e7fe05d2d2e5a2a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171209/a969e4e1def13d8d635cd2be66300cf7.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171209/845181bdd47bf29a1e234d3c5408d740.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171209/8890f581188b3ac289e7bbddcf2693d4.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171209/d9fa6674292033ca10426fb77e773431.jpg

Continued the bike tear down. Found a little redneck engineering as well as a very nice surprise! Every fellow xt550 owner will tell you the stock carbs are utter garbage. Cable primary and vacuum secondary (which didn't even work from the factory). The bike would bog after half throttle no matter what you did. So on my first 550 I tried two vm28's, which worked very well but was very hard to fit and caused a heavy twist. My suspension modifications allowed me too use a grizzly intake and a 38mm mikuni which is perfect! Easy to tune, light twist, again hard to make fit but ultimately it a REALLY woke my old thumper up! I was planning on doing that same setup on this trike conversion, until I noticed that someone has already swapped out for a dual keihin! (I have no idea what machine they are from) so that saves me like 150 bucks and I'm fairly confident that I can get these carbs working great on this bike. This setup even retains the handle bar choke, which is a nice addition!

Should have the rear swinger mocked up very soon! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171209/1503c017face2434ced6b62ad3ab8e1b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171209/b0a488a61240f13e423dcfecf1c5e097.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171209/229d7a048a568cfb36ffec758597a7df.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171209/432c43744644ec20e27a924b8acf9e03.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171209/ed6ee514e074aa4ee0b5c32a0079c9bd.jpg

Hah first guess propping it up with a random pipe and the rake is only .6 more than my 84r! Wheelbase is within a half inch, and I think with a little modification I can even get the seat hight really close (although I'll probably give it a couple inches more than my 84r) the handlebars would be 4ish inches taller, but I'll just use dirt bike bars to help make that up. I'm pretty shocked at how close all the geometry is! I thought for sure I would have to scale everything up a bit. Anyhow time to go buy some square stock to make a new shock mount! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171209/ed4b1dfc2dd5ed2b2a28fca5171afe1b.jpg

Rear suspension getting really close! Like my two piece linkage bracket? ;) in the last linkage conversion I did the bolt wasn't removable without cutting the bracket off so this go round I thought up a better way. I also used square tubing to extend the spine which is much much easier to work with than the pipe I used before. Now I'll figure out where the shock lands and cut a notch in the square stock. I've also decided that I'm going to extend it to that cross piece in the sub frame so the spine will be as strong as possible. I'll do that when I lower that sub frame.

Woohoo!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171211/25b089943e0b1c6113f3f9e99258246d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171211/a986d21e31846266f47b81c6e8dc4f5d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171211/2133cf02fd54cf54c04f0b17eddfc7e1.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171211/792c42301c5bcc17ee823b3a3e112e36.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171211/6f49b18e41ea811417c162960c1d0161.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171211/75b67640c2e1332d57cdd0565b401ca3.jpg

Didn't do a darn thing on this project during the holidays. -27 makes it hard to motivate yourself to work in a cold garage...

But today it was only -9 so I figured I'd take advantage of the nice weather ;) haha

I decided to redo the front hub and did dual bearings. So the front hub has 4 bearings and a spacer in it now https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180102/6b732ac8eff51b166695a281da834874.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180102/c52dfb4554bc753dd9eab1074d2d6f89.jpg

So the front is ready to roll. Brake is all that's left and that should just be a custom caliper bracket to meet up with the rotor (I know, I know, it's kinda small..... Gotta use the one God gave you!)

Nice build! Was there any work that had to be done to make those triples work with the yard forks? Not too much. I made shim for the top triples with sheet aluminum to take up the 2mm difference and I had to use Emmery cloth and a drill (and a lot of time) to shave the botton triples out 2mm. If one had access to a mill that would be a massive time saver. Also it'll require custom fender mounts and a custom bump stop, but it beats how much custom triples are!

Important update! Got a front fender mounted! Major engineering hurdle...... nos maier for 40 bucks!

Oh also got the bottom mount for the linkage finished and the top mocked up (don't worry, I know the top isn't strong enough yet)

Some wider hubs for the rear are on order..... she's way too narrow, even for a trail machine. Should be about 2.5 inches wider and I may get spacers if I'm not happy with that.

Picked up some wider hubs for 40 bucks. They are ugly (much black paint will be used on this trike) but the stance is much much better. Gained 2 inches but it makes a big difference ;)

Anddddd..... well.. the tank is a goner. After lots of rust therapy and some bubble gum patching I found. ... lots and lots more rust pinholes. So, I've given up on this tank. I know when I've been beat. A glance at fleabay and I found a dented but no rust replacement for 150. Works for me, now I won't feel bad when I spray bomb it black and beat it up worse!

My fatty clamps came in, still waiting on my handlebars.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180211/9d35d39eb404ded53df1309c3b6bee33.jpg
The Handlebars are going to be my reference. Because of the height of the front setup I'm using regular motorcycle bars (I may end up cutting them down a hair if they feel too wide). Everything else will be fabbed so I can adjust it all to work well with the handlebars (footpeg position, seat height, ect). Once the bars get in I can start hacking the subframe.

OK! Fine.

I got impatient.

And turns out I'm gonna have to modify the seat pan to make it drop down more. I think I'm gonna use the gap between the tank and the seat for a quick release hook as this fender will be mounted on a hinge (motorcycle kicker swings back into fender)https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180211/bc78c384e13d48c2b605e4639ad2b658.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180211/acccf8038f540b7b5f6b14a314cf225d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180211/77129e478bd8b5a2e55d213d90284b6d.jpg

I agree that plastic tanks are less maintenance, but beating up your knees? And I've put freaking dents in my 500x tank and never even noticed any pain in my knees.....

No actually I'm gonna pull that sprocket off. I can't remember what the tooth count on it but I found a 17t for the front to make it reasonable to raise the chain. I was originally concerned with it riding on the chain slider but after look at some other modern bikes I guess they just do that. So I'm going back to close to stock

Maybe everyone's eyes have glossed over for this build but I'm freaking excited! Sub frame is pretty much done just have to gusset everything and reinforce the shock mount! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180218/865e04adc0bc86cba9738ca14cce4874.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180218/eda5a13ca303a48118fee8dfad07293e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180218/1e8e89aa0623c3be6f85b58681206487.jpg
Gonna use these to hold the front down. Having it come up on a jump doesn't sound fun....https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180218/a5fa1acd9e40739a0553109b7ed47d36.jpg

Run a newer yz tank or a ttr250 tank. You don't need metal bashing up yourknees. It's 2018 not 1983. Tanks are cheap then you could run yfz fenders.

Go build your own bike Oldstool!

I am sure that you have already thought about this and it is on your list to do later. Dual sport bikes from that era all had the foot pegs mounted on rubber to reduce vibrations. Also the pegs were tiny at that time. What are your plans to improve the foot peg set up?

But I'm cutting them off and sticking with the yfz theme and making a mount for some stock yfz foot pegs

May not seem like much but I was really scratching my head about how to make the front seat mount! I also mounted a xt600 head pipe. 2mm larger than stock, longer design and much better collector. I was originally planning on a stock trx450r muffler, but it would interfere with my hinged seat. I found a supertrapp in good shape that'll fit much better. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180224/8e41cb7930856badd350ab1fdb10f873.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180224/0eb07162c4a7b5f7f9678cdbbc35d4d6.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180224/a3847787471a70d0992b69875287d558.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180224/63f34c0164be54622c6d38d7ae4949d2.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180224/08d144f40be8dc48bebc43a6bc48fe9a.jpg

Rear brakes are done! Very very pleased with how simple and stock it looks! And got my carb and filter figured out (I know the filter is dirty haha, I'll clean it later). I realized I had an extra 34mm mikuni and filter from my 500x. I already have jets from 80 to 500 for mikuni and I know this setup works well on xt550's. So I decided to ditch the dual carb setup https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180304/e932f22ef59b4f0175d9f0e027f2d1af.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180304/50b5243d5a45be6fad5be9a83b59c183.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180304/8bb1116dd29d6cd5529fc5fa1f1b0e0f.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180304/520d565642bbf302ee1a2daaeb6aee1b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180304/9b8b07640a4b105842e4d2cd57cdb02e.jpg

Loving this build, it looks great! I'm not the expert, it may be fine, but if you have tuning problems the first thing I would suspect would be the tube from the mouth of the carburetor to the air filter. It would probably stand to benefit from a bigger intake tract or some sort of "dead air" space like what an airbox would provide. Again, it might run fine as is and I realize an airbox isn't really much of an option, but if it didn't run right that's the first area I'd suspect.

plevib
03-04-2018, 03:49 PM
You know actually a custom air box isn't totally out of the question. I'll have to mull that over some because I would also like the water protection..... thanks for the idea! Maybe after I get it running and test it some I will build an air box

Exhaust is done. It took a lot of messing around to make it work but I'm good with how it turned out. There's a handful of other fab things to do left (front brakes, skid plate, headlights, chain slider) but all of the hard stuff is done! Really starting to look like a trike! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180304/5d619299d9fb0469b10cb5f25e732b0e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180304/f1ce585fa62499d5932eadcab58f6d45.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180304/e43195a985287ca33d0fcec3a43b6ff3.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180304/aad4385adf0ab62cab353173e2376f34.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180304/dc1196574ac90f14a6de2563dfb41ef9.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180304/0b0954d920808777bc911183ced4658c.jpg

After a lot of trying to figure out how the heck I was gonna make a grab bar that didn't interfere with the hinged seat I had an idea haha. Not ideal, but very very easy and it'll work just finehttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180307/af0f58f7bf70787d6a6f4edd766660da.jpg

I also ordered some 10mm washers to space the sprocket in a bit to line the chain up better. They are 4mm thick and I'm hoping to shave down the adjuster to make room for 8mm. I will have to countersink the sprocket to make it clear.
Slowly but surely.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180307/73ff5ec4056880b2c9a48f64df523b82.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180307/ca6838bebd3c39ac25e04b77384ddd22.jpg

Soooo... ah..... this is not notably pretty..... I think it'll work for now, but I might have to try to make this piece out of a chunk of aluminum or maybe I'll totally scrap this front hub assembly and try a 200x hub. Idk yet. For now I'm gonna leave it so I can finish more pressing things on this build (who uses the front brake anyways! Haha........) but know that I'm not happy with how this turned out, and will likely change it, so don't judge too hard hahahttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180308/645b62d1fa93b8a014aa913c2cd14ca8.jpg

Well... that sucks. I got the engine tore down, cleaned all the big components (I ordered a ultra sonic cleaner for the smaller parts cuz they suck to clean). I found that the counter balancer keyway was wallowed out. I figured I could grind it larger and fit a bigger key in it. So I moved on. well I was checking the bearings to make sure I didn't get any sand in them and.... found a bad one. Looked closer and it was caused by a crack in the case. So both of the cases on this engine are trash and I only bought a left side replacement. But on the bright side I found a set of cases with a damaged left side AND a counterbalancer for 70 bucks! Couldn't be more perfect or cheaper for my situation. So I unfortunately won't get the engine built this weekend like I was hoping.

So the replacement cases are on order and since this sets me back anyways I ordered a set of rings too. I found oem for 40 bucks so I figured "while I'm in there" applies here haha.

So I'm switching gears to the frame this weekend. My goal is to finish welding, paint, and hopefully have a roller at the end of the weekendhttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180407/954b744d799ebd68ed17cf370d60a7eb.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180407/b70638512daab5fb69008e43fc784524.jpg

I decided I could see the linkage possibly causing my bracket to flex or bend so I added a couple more bolts.

That's the difference between an engineer and a fabricator. An engineer says "how can I make this cost efficient and light and still accomplish the task?" A fabricator says "meh, I'll just add some more metal there to stiffen that up...." hahahttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180408/0076262bcc9caccf2802bafec83738d4.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180408/1764970b978d41ea23a6d621db5a1c48.jpg

Burned some midnight oil and got the bottom end back together with the replacement parts. Still waiting on my rings to come in..... if they don't come in by the weekend I may get impatient and put it together without them.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180418/c3fe9dc43e0406d29e882f8c84fc97fa.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180418/d64e13910499189493d553f75f634c3d.jpg

Got her all together! Took her for a spin and boy, holy torque batman! Feels really comfortable for me, which is something I don't usually say for my trikes (6'4") haha. Unfortunately the steering is pretty heavy. I'm gonna crank up the rear spring and slide the forks up in the triples to try to lighten it up some. But it's 4 in the morning so I'm calling it haha

Here's how it compares with my 84r. The rake is very close so the heavy steering must have to do with the head tube angle. Oh well. By the end of the summer I'll have a grin on my face and buff arms haha...

On a related note I found a very very nice head for the 500x so that one is going back together this week. Hoping to get them both done and take them to the farm this weekend, but I'll at least get the 550 done for sure.

Couple odds and ends left, then I can go for a real ride on it!

The 250R tripleclamps were designed for a trailing axle setup. I would try what you suggested in an earlier post (changing the rear-end ride height), but also spin your forklegs around to leading axle, then adjust from there.

I'm no expert but my understanding is that a leading axle is more stable, but less responsive and a trailing axle is lighter and less stable. Maybe I'm wrong but that's why I went with trailing. Also all atc's I've seen are trailing

There is more to steering geometry than rake. The "trail" part of the geometry I believe has a bigger effect. If you change your forks around to a leading axle it will decrease the trail, making the steering less heavy.

I'll try flipping it and see if that helps. Thanks for making me rethink that haha

I think changing the axle to leading is going to make the steering heavier.

With your combination of zero rake tripleclamps, trailing axle fork setup, and similar rake to your 250R, I'm betting you have way too much trail. Flipping your forks around to a leading axle configuration, with that same head tube angle, may result in too little trail, so you'll probably have to adjust the rear-end ride height, and possibly the front as well, to get the head tube angle where it needs to be, but you'll be happy with the effort when you get it right. Also, all Tecates & 350X's were leading axle.

Trail is leverage. More trail means more leverage the ground has against the handle bars as it is trying to keep the front wheel strait, giving it a heavy feel. Less trail moves that leverage back to the handle bars. Too little trail will make the bike /Trike unstable at higher speeds and feel "twitchy" because the ground is no longer helping to keep the wheel strait. You need to find the sweet spot.
In your setup, it looks easy to try the axle flip first, since it appears you all ready have a pretty steep angle to your swing arm.

You've got it completely backwards Bob.

Axle leading or axle trailing is irrelevant. Whether the rake is built into the steering neck, the triples, or the position of the entire frame itself, the rake is the upright line which the front forks follow as they sweep left and right. The difference between leading axle and trailing axle is built into the rake in order to accommodate the decision to make the axle either leading or trailing, not the other way around. If you're using your axle position to alter your rake, you're doing something wrong. Decide which axle position you'd like and then rake it accordingly.

My XR650L conversion still has the bike rake, which is too much rake and not enough trail, and it handles like it has too much rake. I've known it for years and I know very well what too much rake looks and feels like. Go ahead and swap the axle around if you want to, but it's going to make the steering even more heavy.

OK well the results are in and Bob and red rider are right! Leading axle and the steering is nice and light! I haven't ridden it more than up and down my alley so I can't say how it is at high speed, but it's definitely more comfortable now. I don't really firmly grasp why it made it lighter, but it did and I'm stoked!

Thanks for the help guys!

Gonna button up a couple odds and ends. This weekend she gets a real life test. Can't wait!!!

Rake is a funny thing. Even the "rake" that's built into a 250r's triples isn't really rake. Rake is in the neck of the frame, not the forks. The so called "Rake" in the 250r triples I believe is there to lessen the trail. The axle leading or trailing has an effect on steering also, but I haven't really studied that as much, but It does move the axle position quite a bit as it relates to trail.

I think what Bob is saying here is correct. I've been reading on this a bit, and although still new to me, this explanation of trail is consistent with the RaceTech suspension book.

Trail is the distance between the contact patch of the tire and the location where the steering axis intersects the ground. So as far as forces being generated on the steering system, it really is just the contact patch acting through the lever arm (the trail distance) to the steering axis. So longer trail would require you to overcome a larger force than shorter trail.

All the other geometry aspects (rake, offset, leading axle, etc) simply determine what the final trail distance will be.

Your frame neck is what is swiveling when you turn your handlebars and you measure directly thru the frame neck center to the ground at that angle to get your rake position, then you measure where center of your axle is perpendicular to the ground. You measure between those two points to get your trail figure.

Incorrect trail gives you steering issues

Raked trees only correct the trail so that they can put axles in more convenient locations relative to the forks and their design.
