Well, after what I think has been 5+ years without a trike or quad in the shed, I'm back in the game. I'm glad to see the forum is still alive and kicking, It's been a while since I posted here.
I think I sold my last ATV in 2012 and have only had 2-wheelers (onroad and dual-sport have kept me busy).
I'd occasionally check craigslist, but it seemed like trikes were getting harder to find and more expensive, $1200 for a clapped out 200S, 250r's for $3K+, and hard to find anything that wasn't beat to hell.
By chance a couple of weeks ago I stumbled on an add for this DX for $550. It seemed like a good price, and the DX was complete and running, so I picked it up. It needs a good tune-up, cleaning, and some new tires, but is in good shape and runs well. Everything down to the lights works. It should make for a quick project.
Then last week I saw an ad for this Tecate. The ad only showed the frame minus the engine, and didn't really provide any details, but it turned out the guy had everything. I think I did OK for $375. Apparently it was running ~10 years ago, but developed a knock in the bottom end. It was parked and the engine disassembled, but that is as far as he went. This one will probably take a while. My '82 IT175 restore, for example, took me around a year to complete due to work and other hobbies, but it should be a fun and rewarding project even if it takes a lot of time. I've had a Tri-Z and have ridden various 250r's, but Tecates seem to be scarce around here. I'm glad to have the chance to own one.
I believe it is an '85, or at least has an '85 front end. What is throwing me is that the tank and front fender are red, the owner said that the rear fenders were originally red too. As far as I remember red was only '84, so either the plastics were swapped or the front end was swapped. Does anyone know a way I can tell the year for sure?
