I talked to this guy last night. 86 R in very good shape, and comes with a box of parts that he called an Ice Racing Kit. It includes a flat track tank, scoops, and this big cage for the front tire. Is this cage homemade, or is this a rare Hondaline thing. Also comes with a set of studded tires. I met him when it was dark out, and I am going back Saturday morning to talk about a deal and take it for a spin. He said that it has about ten hours on the new top end, then his son flipped it and broke his collar bone. It been sitting since (about a year and a half). He said his kid is still afraid of it so hes selling.

Has anyone seen one of these front wheel guards before ?

Have no idea about the tire cage, but the "86R" in the second picture looks to me to have an 85 style headlight and 85 style thinner seat.

It may be an 85, I really dont know the difference between the liquids. Ill check the frame tag on saturday. What are the differences between the 85-86 R's. Not that it matters, Ill probably still pick it up. Heres another pic. Sorry, all he had was a halogen light, with my crappy camera phone.

THE MOST OBVIOUS,,, black motor,,, also if the tail light brackets are welded to the frame its an 85,,,, ,,sometimes with all the parts switching its hard to tell ,,, but the tail light brackets usually never change,,,

I ice race and when we used to race the trikes I saw alot of these guards for the front tire, they were all home made. They were required where I raced. I race a quad now and they require us to put fenders over the front tires about an inch above the tire to keep flying studs under control.

I don't think thats a honda line product, but I have been know to be wrong before.

Post some more pics when you pick it up.

yes, the cage around the front tires is common on ice racers

thanks for the info guys. Ive got a 1991 f-150 ext. cab 4X4 that ive been trying to get $1700 for it (id take $1500). Hes interested in the truck, and I want the trike. Im pretty sure that as long as it runs like he says that it will be a done deal. Hes asking $1000 for the trike plus the box of parts (flat track kit, and some misc. parts all in good/great shape, two sets of low profile tires one set studded). I told him $700 plus the truck. He said we could work something out. Well haggle, but I wont take less than $600. What do you think ?

Anything to pay particular attention to when I take it for a spin ? I know about general things, just wondering about any specific problems with this year.

Sounds like a good deal with all the extras. Think of as an investment, 250r parts are only going to be worth more as the years go by. I would buy it. Check the left case for chain derailment damage, drain plug, I've seen alot of these motors with the drain plug messed up. If your going to ride it, let it warm up and run it through all the gears and make sure it shifts nice. Even if its got a couple problems its probably still worth the $1000.
