View Full Version : Thoughts for China made reproduction parts?

I'm talking with a Chinese store owner which also has a factory that makes their parts etc. I'm working with them to get an aftermarket (aka cheap) option for the 250sx ignition switch. I currently buy Honda ones and resell them modified for the 250SX, but it's quite expensive (you get what you pay for etc). If all works out maybe there's another part I can get them to make for us. They have everything from CDI boxes to engine case halves and such. Clearly it has to be an item that would sell semi well for them to tool up and make the products, and it will be China quality sadly. Anything to do with wiring, I'll be replacing the wiring on, fixing contact surfaces, lubing switches/slides etc. I'm not sure how soon they will be able get a part out, but if all goes well, expect somewhat cheap 250SX and 250ES ignition switches in 3ww shop and ebay. FYI, 250ES switch is in production yet.

Anyway, post some ideas, I can't think of a whole lot off the top of my head atm besides the ignition switch. I'm not sure what they are capable of, but seems like they are more than willing to work with me.

Just a couple ideas I'm not sure on

Handle bar switches, like 250es with built in choke has no solid OEM "modern" version to replace it that I'm aware of.
Some sort of ignition switch dash for the 350x/250r/200x for the ignition switch kit I used to make and would like to reintroduce again. The 87 style 200x dash is a known fit, not sure if changing the styling would be accepted or if a clone of it would be most desirable.

They make a few different intakes, so maybe an intake for something, what's one that's prone to fail and no replacement options?

They make stators and such too, not sure how much I'd trust them though based on the general wiring from China.

I am surprised it is so difficult to get repop headlight assemblies. I know all the honda ones were made by Stanley. I know many are into the LED conversions but I would expect stock headlights would be a big seller for 350X, 250r, 200x

Yea I was kind of thinking headlights too, and also the headlight housings, but those are fairly large ticket items cost wise. I'm guessing they will have some sort of min order I'll have to make. They do have some round headlights somewhat similar to the late model atc70 machines but are black, but I know nothing about them. There's a lack of specs on a lot of their part listings (sizes etc) so if there's interest I can ask them about it.

I personally hate to make a pre-order type of setup, I've never really been into pre-orders myself on the buying side, and it's more or less a loan from customers. I'm a bit of an odd guy, I completely hate debt, so I'm debt free and try to stay that way whenever possible.

I've noticed the LED trend lately too, might have to make a simple "DC Power" kit for machines which would support runing an LED and an optional output for charging a small battery, and maybe add an option to also buy a known working LED with the setup. I'm sure people would rather buy something known to work and is plug and play instead of hacking up their harness in the hopes they wired things right and the LED can handle the voltage swings and such that exist on an ATV without a battery.

While on on the subject of harness building and such, seems like the 85-86 250r and 350x headlights people like to swap from machine to machine. I just got contacted about an adapter for 350x headlights on a 250r and I think this is the second person to ask me about that. Not sure what else is a desirable swap. I've recently been doing research on CDI's too, might have an upgrade pig tail in the shop soon for atleast the 85 250es/sx to use the 86-87 style CDI, can also make one for the 85 250r to use the 86 style CDI which likely would work for the 81-84 250r's as well, but the 85+ CDI has a bit more timing advancement over their stock CDI (great for modded machines, but not sure if stock they will like it).

Probably should mention, anything to do with wiring, I'm doing myself with good quality wire, the rest of the parts like ignition switches and such are either Chinese (with me rewiring them etc) or Honda made (modded stock parts).
