Thanks.

A lot of us have done some or all the mods in the Wrench Report. I added the extra boost port and the results were great. You have to be careful, though, because there isn't a lot of aluminum and you don't want to weaken the cylinder. The report also recommends to raising the exhaust port height 1.5 mm. I didn't do that. I wanted to check the top end first with the extra boost port, and it had plenty. Raising the exhaust port will give you more top end, but you'll also lose bottom end.
And once you raise a port you can't lower it, so take it in steps. The Z also greatly benefits from a V-force reed, reed spacer, bigger carb, and aftermarket pipe. They also recommend shaving to head to bump up compression, which is probably a must if you do raise the port height because you have less trapped volume. I have a Sprock cool head so I bumped up the compression using a smaller dome. The Z's engine can be modded into a bad ass. It's an underrated machine.

http://www.quadpit.com/mags/1985/3-4w-action/yam-wrench-report-tri-z.htm do the full wrench report and a good pipe (Dynoport) and you'll be very pleased.. if you need to bore the cylinder the YZ Piston is also an upgrade. So far everything I've done in the wrench report my Z has liked. I didn't use the 38mm Mikuni though, I used the 39mm PWK and my exhaust port is actually raised 3mm. As far as a loss on the bottom end.... Eh if it's there I can't tell it, I've even went up a tooth on the front sprocket and it still pulls like a train through the whole power band. My head I had milled 1mm.

Thanks for the insight and thoughts. Sounds like it will be a great improvement.
Who are some good choices to use for the porting work?
I don't want to try this myself.
Thanks.

Eric Gorr comes to mind but there's a thousand others. This is pretty basic, I did mine myself.

I'd take the jug to a machine shop or someone who can weld aluminum and add some material to the side you're going to add the boost port and do it yourself. Then you can have them shave the head for you too.

I would try contacting Rob Selvy or LED performance to see if they have any experience with tri-zs.
