Hey guys, I’m down in Glamis on day 4/7 for riding and my 1985 Atc 250r is having some troubles shifting. The clutch still seems tight and working as it should (no issues starting off or anything like that). However it’s becoming more and more difficult for the transmission to actually switch between gears. I’ll try to upshift from 2nd to 3rd and when I release the clutch after shifting I’m still in 2nd gear unless I upshift a few times then it finally clicks into gear. I’m thinking I bent a shift fork or something in the shifting mechanism. Can anyone give me some insight? Thanks

Already changed out the oil too and it didn’t help anything (Honda HP hi performance tranny oil 80w/85w)

90% of the time it is the mechanism itself.

Even if it's just a couple gears, I'd pull my cover and take a look.

You're in a schity time situation to do repairs, but there's probably plenty of tools and guys willing to help.

I normally take the cover off with the trike on a stand, and spin the rear tires while I shift it and watch what it does; That just about always gives me an answer.

Good luck bud!!

I've had allot of motors apart, I've only found a couple or shift fork issues, ever...

Thanks dirtcrasher for the tips, not sure if I’m gonna pull the cover with the blowing sand and I haven’t tried shifting up without clutch glamy, that might help get it to switch easier?

Glamy I spent a lot of time with this kid at Trikefest, he's as good as they get. If you can help him I'll give you a blumpkin.

Load up your tools Glamy, and an enclosed trailer would be nice. With generator. Bring your R for him in case you can't fix his.

Hahah no canuk ladies with us sorry! But no difference not using the clutch, if I slowly pull it up into third it seems to switch better

I wish I had a solution to offer you, but at least you have the rest of your gears. You'll probably still be able to get around at least.

Knowing NOTHING about the ATC 250R, I tend to agree with DC, only place I've ever seen bent ones are in inline 4's and dogs need to be pretty banged up to slip out of gear on a single banger.

It sounds like something might be messed up in the shift mechanism itself. I'd be looking at springs. Here's an image if you don't have a manual handy.

Sorry to hear about your issues, and not trying to jack your thread, but as a fellow canuck, I'd be curious to hear about how you got the trike back and forth across the border, when you have time. I've always wanted to head south with mine, but I've heard it can be risky getting back.

Sounds to me like your shift spindle prawl is bent or your return springs are damaged. You could also have a stopper arm that’s bent. Have you been drag racing it with hard shifts or trying to speed shift under load?

I have insurance and registration on it, no issues at the border with it

Speed shifting under load I would say yes, grabbing gears pretty quick climbing hills

Also not trying to jack this thread but Sam and I went to Trikefest 15 with 5 machines of which only 3 had insurance and registration, the guard only asked to see paperwork on the 250R, Big Red and Tri-x-Side; could care less about the 2 70's, risky but we had no issues. We also picked a quiet rural border crossing in North Dakota.

Amazing how secure the Northern border is versus the Southern border.

And I haven't me to man asshole Canucks...

Pull the right side cover off along with basket. See if there is anything messed up in the linkage. If not that then it’s time to crack the cases.
