1985 Big Red Starter Assembly Question

So, putting my Big Red back together after a repair and have a question about the starter assembly gears. With provided picture the washer will not/ cannot go against the c clip. If it does it doesn’t allow the big gear to fit in the gears on the shaft. I put it after the gear.Any help would be great.

Grab the service manual from this site: https://threewheelermanuals.com/honda
Scroll past the "Owners Manuals" and download the "Shop Manual". The 250ES is in two parts, so grab both.

Check out the diagram at the beginning of Chapter 9.

The shop manual shows the diagram differently than the parts diagram. Using the numbers from the parts diagram you linked, it appears that the parts are ordered as you say it needs to be in order to fit: On the #10 shaft, first the circlip #22, then the gear #11, then finally the washer #16.

Looks like you are doing it right, as best I can tell.

Thanks Wonderboy. I looked at the diagram and the parts diagram has them in the wrong order. So, my guess was right.
