I have an 84 250r , took it to ct racing to get top end done. We got it back and put it all together, gas tank and fresh mix back on, fresh oil change, new plug. Now that bad part!...

I kicked it about 4 times to start it and it sounded very promising, then I kicked again and there was a new sound, definatly a scratching noise , loud . I tried about 2 more kicks on top of that, same noise and then stopped and put it away we were too disappointed. Anyone know what this could be? Is this something common or horrible or can be fixed?? Thank you.

There is no good way to diagnose a scraping/scratching noise in the motor without taking it apart, which you'll have to do anyway because it's not running right. It could be at least a dozen different things and none of them can be fixed without taking motor apart to some degree and finding the issue

Is the noise only present during trying to kick it over or is it present when it’s running also?

I didn't get it to start , so far only when I kick it

Pull it back apart , maybe one of the piston rings snagged a port .
Always crank a fresh topend job over a few cranks to check for issues before installing the head .

Like the guys say, you need to take it apart.

Odds are you either lost a clip or you put the piston in backwards and snagged a ring.

Ok thanks. I took the head off to take a look, everything looked good actually , no scratches or scapes and kicked the starter about 10 times and sounded perfectly smooth . From the looks of it the rings looked in place too but it started to rain so had to pack up quick before we got the cylinder off..
